Bad break pressure after changing lines

Question From Guest on Bad break pressure after changing lines

I have a 1998 chevy s10 pick up with a 2.0 and approx. 140.000.My brakes went out and I replaced all the way from the front to the back.I also replaced the wheel cylinders. I have bleed the brakes and have a good flow, but still don't have good pressure. The guy at the auto store said my proportion valve may need to be reset.I don't see one, and am stumped.

Response From Hammer Time

A couple of things could have happened here

Many times when there is a brake failure, it allows the brake pedal to go to the floor which the allows the master cylinder piston to travel into parts of the bore where it usually doesn't travel. This area usually has some corrosion or pitting in the bore which damages the rubber seals and ruins the master cylinder.

Another possibility is having the wrong wheel cylinders putting the bleeder on the bottom and trapping air in the cylinder that can't be bled.

The third possibility is still having air trapped in the ABS unit. This sometimes requires a scan tool to electronically bleed it internally.

Response From Guest

Thanks for the help, I appreciate it. I know its not the cylinders, but how would I know which of the other two it could be? I would think that if it was pumping it thru, that it wouldn't be the master cylinder, but you seem to know more about it.Thanks again for your help.

Response From Hammer Time

What do you mean by "good pressure".
Is it a problem with the pedal feel or the stopping power?
What does the pedal feel like?

Response From Guest

It won"t hold pressure. It seems okay when the truck is off, but the minute I start it, it is soft and goes to the floor.

Response From Hammer Time Top Rated Answer

You just don't have all the air out yet. You probably have some air trapped in the ABS unit and it may require a factory scan to to bleed it internally.

Response From Guest

It has me stumpped big time now. I went to move my truck to get another car out, and everything seems fine.I have breaks, they aren't soft, it's just like before the line busted.I have really appreciated your help, thanks,
Frank

Response From Hammer Time

Yes, the ABS unit bled itself out.
I have had GM vehicles that we have spent an entire day and gallons of fluid trying to bleed an ABS unit out and then suddenly it's bled with no warning.

Sometimes I take them out and slam on the brakes in a gravel surface and when the ABS activates, it bleeds itself out them.

brake problem

Question From buck123 on brake problem

I had a hole in a brake line so had brake line replaced.A week later pedal getting spongy so I bleed all wheels starting from the farthest from the master cylinder to the closest.the only wheel that had air was the drivers side rear.I had great brake pedal for 3 days and now spongy pedal again.I again have air in the same wheel drivers side rear.I don't notice any decrease in fluid in the master cylinder. If there is it is very slight and not noticable.the rear wheel cylinder in the wheel with air in it is bone dry behind duster caps.only air in the one rear wheel. Some mechanic told me probably master cylinder.I was thinking about using a uv dye if they make it for brake fluid.any ideas?thanks in advance.

Response From steve01832 Top Rated Answer

Sounds to me like the master cylinder has an internal leak and is pushing air into the system. Your best bet is to replace it. Make sure you bench bleed the new one before you connect the lines or you will have to bleed all 4 wheels again.

Steve

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Off the topic - Steve! Great to see you here. Site has grown quite a bit since we started now so long ago.

Back to the problem - I think it's a master cylinder too,

Tom

Response From steve01832

Hi Tom. I've been so busy I can't find time any more to come here and be productive. I'm here tonite but may be another year until I'm heard from. lol

Steve

Response From Hammer Time

Nice to hear from you Steve..........

Response From buck123

Hey its an office party!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! garage replaced brake lines.Since I had air in only drivers side rear wheel whenever I bleed 2nd time I turned bleeder screw a little extra thinking when garage bled they didn't tighten all the way or there was air in the proportioning valve.I have good brake for 7 days now since I last bled them. Thanks guys.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Fully understood that people have other things to do and get busy. It can also get old doing this stuff which is fine too and expected that some tech come and go. I'm still here because this is rest for me as what I should be doing is hard work - laugh,

Tom

Brake pedal sinking

Showing 7 out of 10 Posts | Show 3 Hidden Posts
Question From BoppinAbout on Brake pedal sinking

97 Corolla, 167K miles.

After a poor emergency stop two weeks ago I found my break lines were leaking and had them replaced. Car now stops fine---even with a hard stop---but the pedal slowly sinks about halfway down when stopped at a light. I wasn't having this problem---or at least, I wasn't aware of it---prior to having the brake lines changed.

There has been no loss of braking power or of brake fluid in the last two weeks. Mechanic checked the lines again and they are not leaking. I believe he properly bled the lines (I was there and helped him do it, so I know the pedal was firm after bleeding).

My understanding is that the most likely cause of the sinking pedal is an internal leak in the master cylinder.

2 questions:

1) How urgent is this problem? If the car is stopping ok, should I be ok driving around town for a day or two to buy the parts and get to my mechanic? Or do I need to stop driving immediately?

2) Should I just go ahead and change the master cylinder, or should I ask the mechanic to check the wheel cylinders, calipers, and anything else related? If it's most likely the master cylinder, might it be cheaper to start with that??

Response From Hammer Time

That is a very urgent problem. You won't have a brake pedal when you need it most and won't have time to pump it up.
There is a good chance you are right about the master cylinder but it could also be the ABS unit although the only way to find out is replace the master, assuming you are not losing any brake fluid.
Losing a master cylinder after another brake failure is not an unusual thing to happen. When you were bleeding and when you had the initial failure, the master cylinder pedal pushed the seals further down into the bore than they normally travel and this are is commonly full of junk and corrosion, tearing or damaging the seals as they pass by.

Response From BoppinAbout

Thanks very much for that explanation of how the emergency stop both blew out the brake lines and damaged the master cylinder. It makes sense.

My 97 Corolla doesn't have antilock brakes to my knowledge.

Clarification: When stopped at a light, I do NOT have to pump the brake to prevent the car from creeping forward. The brakes hold the car fine. All stops seem to have full power. Given that, is it ok to drive to the parts store and to my mechanic? Total distance is only a few miles of low-speed driving.

I would describe this pedal sinking problem as mild, not severe. It is barely noticeable. However, I do take it seriously and will attend to it tomorrow, don't worry. Just need to know if I can drive to the parts store.

Response From Hammer Time

I understand exactly what is happening and although it may not seem like much, if you do any long braking as coming off an interstate, you could have nothing when you get to the end. Giving it a pump will bring the pedal back but you may not have time for that. It could suddenly get worse also.

Response From BoppinAbout

OK, thanks, I will take care of it immediately. No interstate driving.

Response From Sidom

OK, thanks, I will take care of it immediately. No interstate driving.

Man I would've felt so much better it that post just said "NO MORE DRIVING"

With brk problems, it just not your safety you are jeopardizing and usually it's the other person/s that suffers the greatest loss...

Response From BoppinAbout

I fully understand, but I have to at least get the car to my mechanic. The auto parts store and the mechanic are both about 2 miles from my house. The mechanic tested the brakes and said he felt the problem wasn't urgent. I just wanted to doublecheck with you folks. I will take care of this tomorrow.

Response From Sidom

Well I do feel better now, knowing that you aren't planning on driving it for a few days like it sounded like you were planning....Thank you

Be extremely careful driving it even to the shop, be aware of the park brk in case needed.....When a panic situation arises, everything starts going 100 miles an hour and you have very little time to react. Remember your emergency stop earlier and how fast everything seemed to happen at the time.......

Sometimes a cheap tow might not seem like a bad idea.....

Good luck with your problem and hope it gets fixed quick for you.

Response From BoppinAbout Top Rated Answer

Maybe I exaggerated the amount of sinking. Definitely not to the floor, nor quickly. It took me a few days to even realize it was happening.

I trust this mechanic. He's done a lot of work on my car and seems more skilled than any mechanic I've had in the past. But I'm a cautious person and will take care of this right away.

Response From Hammer Time

The mechanic tested the brakes and said he felt the problem wasn't urgent

I don't understand how any competent technician can say that about a bypassing brake pedal. Advice like that and the right lawyer could cast him everything he owns.

Brakes are bad

Question From fgunternahrer on Brakes are bad

First things this is not on a car it is a forklift but that should make this easier. It is a very simple system it has a master cylinder with no type of booster on it. from the master cylinder it goes to the two front drum brakes. it has a pressure switch in line on the right side hose to work the brake lights. Now for my problem. The pedal was way to hard you barely touch the brakes and they lock up so i adjusted them down a little bit and they were perfect... for about a day then the pedal all the sudden went too the floor... so i once again adjusted it and it was excellent for a day or two then it went back to being to hard so i adjusted it again this went on for a few times then i decided to just let it go when it was too hard. it stayed hard for about a week then suddenly went to the floor again on its own. I have replaced the master cylinder, twice, so i know it isn't that. when i try to bleed the brakes they don't bleed right. i can never get a good solid stream out of the bleed screw it always just kinda sputters like there is air in the line but the pedal isn't soft which doesn't make sense to me. and no matter how much brake fluid i bleed through it it still sputters. it is like this on both wheels where it just sputters when i try to bleed it. i can see all of the brake line from the master to the wheel and there is no leak on the line. i bench bled the master cylinder the best i could before i installed it but maybe i should try again. please let me know any suggestions

Response From synchro Top Rated Answer

I've only worked on 2 forklifts in my time. One was a 60's vintage Clark the other a Mitsubishi. I recall having something similar on the Clark. The pedal got hard at the slightest touch and a wheel would lock up. But it wouldnt release either unless I opened the bleeder to that wheels cylinders. Yeah each wheel had 2 cylinders! Each wheels brake assy had 2 leading shoes. Pulled the wheels and drums off to find a mess. On the bad wheel whatever brake lining was left was 'rust jacked' off the shoe and its wheel cylinder was siezing from internal rust. Wound up rebuilding the entire brake system in that one. Man them are parts are expensive! Hope this helps

Response From Discretesignals

How are the wheel cylinders? I have seen wheel cylinders suck in air when you let off the brake pedal or during bleeding causing air to be in the lines.
