2005 Ford e350 Emergency Brake light on

Question From ericwalker on 2005 Ford e350 Emergency Brake light on

My 2005 Ford e350 emergency brake light started to light up on the dash intermittently now it is always on. Wondering if this is just a short in the wiring or if it indicates something else?

Response From Hammer Time

Check your brake fluid level.

Response From ericwalker

Thanks, that seemed to work..

Response From Discretesignals

Is there are reason the fluid is low?

Response From ericwalker

No, no reason, though I am keeping my eye on level to see if it goes down again, or to see if I have a drip showing under where it is parked.

Response From Hammer Time

No, no reason,

Of course there is a reason. You just haven't determined it yet whether it be a leak somewhere or just worn front brakes.

Response From ericwalker

Thanks for heads up, though I replaced the front breaks - pads and rotors about 3 months ago...I will check leaks in the master cylinder and other hoses.

Response From Hammer Time

The fluid had to go somewhere so either it leaked somewhere or it transferred down into the caliper as the pads wore. Make sure you check the rear wheel cylinders behind the dust cups.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Gotta find this leak - too important. Seems wear to fronts isn't it but it was low? Left low perhaps by mistake?

Again, if you can get a drop from anywhere on your finger it will rinse off with plain water - that's brake fluid. Hidden can be inside dust boots of calipers, wheel cylinder dust boots for a while and should be dry of fluid as HT said. Master can leak down where mounted and on the rare side find a why to leak hidden to inside a booster. If that is the only possible chance of a hidden leak I think I'd loosen (not undo) the master and see if fluid then came out right there.

My experience is that a brake fluid leak will not just stay slow for long and result in a sudden total loss. This must be found,

T

Response From Tom Greenleaf Top Rated Answer

Just know that brake fluid will wash away if driven in rain or washed vs an oil. Common places if leaking at all are at master cylinders, calipers or wheel cylinders and places where rust is an issue the line give out. No leaking is allowed and can if real blow out to near zero braking all at once! Pay attention. Low brake fluid can be indicative of very worn disc brake pads and or rotors,

need help with brake troubles on 97 F 250 truck

Question From bristack on need help with brake troubles on 97 F 250 truck

I have a 97 Ford F250 7.3L Diesel 4X4 truck with brake troubles When I first apply pressure to the pedal I get some braking but eventually it fades to the point that the brake light comes on. If I try to pump the pedal then it's extremely hard to push down and there's very little braking. I have to push really hard to get any braking. Is this a sign of the diesel brake booster vacuuum pump going bad or is it the master cylinder.Help please

Response From Hammer Time

Is the fluid level dropping at all?

Response From bristack

Yes the brake fluid is at the same level I don't see any signs of brake fluid leaking.

Response From Hammer Time

If your pedal is slowly dropping to the point that it puts the brake light on and it's not losing any fluid, then that indicates a bad master cylinder.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Arggh! Just went thru this with the similar Chev of my own. Raining to beat the band so you can't really tell but in that case fluid was lost! As Hammer said if not loss of fluid it can be the master cylinder alone doing that and hope your 1997 will bleed out without additional headaches. Mine was short areas of brake line rusted out and master survived bleeding process - some won't at the age and add to the costs of course.

IMO - Fords are more brake and fuel line rust resistant than GMs. If rust isn't an issue where you are then as Hammer said this would almost always be a master cylinder problem. If you find that to be the issue - I strongly suggest paying the extra for new over reman ones,

T

Response From Hammer Time

Let me add that in some cases it can also be the ABS unit bypassing but that's pretty rare. You always look at the master first.

Response From re-tired

ford trucks have had a problem for years with the firewall flexing during braking ,causeing symtoms similar to yours. might want to check the area around the brake mounting while someone presses the brake.

Response From Hammer Time

ford trucks have had a problem for years with the firewall flexing during braking ,causeing symtoms similar to yours. might want to check the area around the brake mounting while someone presses the brake.

That isn't going to put the brake light on.

Response From re-tired Top Rated Answer

I didn't say it did. i was just stating a fact that could be PART of the problem..Here is some items that can trip a lite.
A red brake warning light that stays on could result from a defective parking brake switch, low brake fluid level, hydraulic leak or an electrical fault. If rear wheels lock during braking you could have grease on the shoes, out-of-round or oversized brake drums, loose wheel cylinders, or your hydraulic control valves could need service.
Finally, for the car that pulls to one side during braking, causes include: a defective suspension, leaking wheel cylinder, plugged brake hose, improper tire pressure, or a stuck wheel cylinder or caliper piston.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

BTT - the pedal can fade without loss of fluid and would trigger an imbalance and most vehicles would light a RED brake warning light if so. This smacks of a bad master cylinder as Hammer said.

Grease on brakes and many other faults wouldn't cause the pedal to fade! Same light will light if parking brake doesn't fully retract to off in many vehicles. If this was an ABS issue that light should be amber and on!

Frozen caliper or wheel cylinder could after driving heat up brake fluid to boiling and a soft pedal would result. That about always demonstrates itself as a hard pull if a front issue or a hot wheel even smoking hot which was not mentioned so far so I think this is a master cylinder. They can do that without warning. Best we can do is educated guessing unless we have the vehicles in front of us and we do a lot of it here,

2002 Ford Taurus Rear Brake problem

Question From robnaj on 2002 Ford Taurus Rear Brake problem

2002 Ford Taurus/3.5L/94,000 Miles

I was changing my brakes and the front went fine but upon breaking down the rear drum, I noticed that there was a ton of liquid inside of the brake area. It looked to be either oil or brake fluid but when depressing the brake nothing leaked out. I want to figure out why this is before putting it back together and having the same problem over again. Thanks, Rob.

Response From way2old Top Rated Answer

More than likely it is brake fluid coming out of the wheel cylinder. These are common failure points on the Taurus brake system. They are not too expensive and not really hard to change.

Question From dmac0923 on Calling Way20ld & JIM N

hey guys, Tom recommended i come to you for my dilema.

brief back ground.

2002 Ford Ranger 4.0 XTL 4wd 10" rear drums.

this all started when my rear drums were dragging.

new drums, new shoes new hardware kits.

drums were still dragging even with the starwheel adjusters bottomed out!!!

replaced both rear parking brake cables.

drivers side drum spins freely with starwheel bottomed out

passenger side is EXTREMELY tight, its a struggle to turn with two hands. the front shoe is extended more then the rear shoe.
i opened the bleeder and brake line on the wheel cylinder thinking it wasnt retracting, but i couldnt get it to bottom out anymore. leading me to believe its something still with the brake cable. the lever arm appears to be fully retracted and the coil spring on the cable isnt compressed.

the parking brake on the 02 Ranger is SELF adjusting. there is no manual adjustment. the manual says in order to reset tension after service depress and release the pedal several times.

Response From dmac0923

Here are pics of the coupler for the parking brake where the intermediate cable joins the left/right rear cables

here is an overview of the brake assembly (Yes i know about the antiseize lol i didnt have brake grease on hand and didnt feel like going to the store. its not on the friction material)

the anit-rattle spring on the parking brake equilizer bar is compressed is it supposed to be?

Tom kinda compared whats going on to venetian window blinds. i cant get the two sides to pull equally.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

To add: Way2old, Dan, Jim, Dave - anyone---- I've never had to fool with this type self adjusting parking brake cable which seems with a few PMs back and forth that is too tight for the new brake job and drums don't free spin over this job with everything retracted - star adjuster was at bottom - stuck cables new, and seems like all is in place?? So - I do recall these get set by just using the parking brake which must coil up front cable till tight and allow a preset of release which is doesn't seem to do - or how to you make it release more?? I didn't know.

I do recall the Ford rear disc brakes (70s at least) the park brake pedal would way over realease and you would just keep pumping up the pedal till brake was tight - designed like that and none ever failed??

It was my thought that this was like the roll up window shades that if you don't have them wound to a certain spot they wouldn't go up - kind of reverse of what I think this is doing.

That bar that I termed "anti-rattle" spring for the connecting bar looks fully compressed to me and I'd like to see some forward and back motion in those in any of the drum brakes of this general style - bet it has none and is making the shoes anchor there even if just an unseen tidbit. Ideas guys on how to loosen that cable?

Tom

Ps: For impatient family usually I would just take that connecting bar right out when of course they couldn't wait for a new cable to come in when just a frozen cable was the issue........

Response From Double J

Sounds like /looks like everything is in place...hard to tell enough with that view...

Just thinking out loud here...is the parking brake equalizer (bar) in place properly? should be over the shoe and the lever.
Stupid question...I know..but have to ask it...
Are these the correct shoes for the truck?
Does it free up with the cable disconnected?...or equalizer removed..

Still thinking here

Response From way2old

Hey dmac. Can you post pictures of the rear of the backing plate? Need to see the cable attaching area. Or use a hammer and punch and see if you can move the adjuster any more. The cam is bad about rusting up and siezing in place. Let us know.

Response From dmac0923 Top Rated Answer

i totally disassembled the starwheel, and cleaned/lubed the threads. so its truely bottomed out.

in the garage today, i deceided to try putting the old right/rear cable back in to see if it helped any. the exterior is totally identical in length and design. but i discoverd the actual braided cable is approx 1.5" shorter on the Raybestos replacement then the OEM stock one. So i ordered a new one from Ford and well see if that helps.

i tell ya, you can really drive yourself nuts trying to get something to work properly if the parts arent made to specs jesus.

keeping the fingers crossed for now. btw i ordered two new wheel cylinders from ford too since i AGAIN have everything totally disassembled

Response From Tom Greenleaf

actual braided cable is approx 1.5" shorter on the Raybestos replacement then the OEM stock one.

Egad dmac - that's a lot! That is quite likely out of range of any auto adjust and might explain why over the decades never had a problem with this area like this. I always matched up old and new on the floor even if I'd cut them out.

You want real hair loss - buy the generic "make your own" cable kit and cut and fit those in! New wheel cylinders can only help. You said they are on order. I get those new (aftermarket) for about $10 each and see closer to $40 for some - don't know why the large spread on price??

Hang in there - this will be all set soon,

Question From Guest on Loose steering on 46 Dodge 1/2 ton truck

The pittman arm connects to a bar that runs forward to the rest of the steering linkage (don't know what that bar is called). That connection is real loose. Anyone know where I can get the pittman arm and that bar it connects to? Or can they be rebuilt?
Thanks

Okay, you are really stressing my memory, here. Drag link, I think. Check with NAPA. I'm amazed at what they can still get.

Response From Guest

You are correct! Draglink it is. NAPA ordered a rebuild kit for me....$90 or so.

Chris; Super! I am absolutely amazed at the old stuff that they can still get. I had a '40 Ford Coupe. They had the wheel cylinders and brake linings in stock at the warehouse. Unbelievable!

I received the draglink kit: basically 2 cups that fit against eiach side of the ball on the end of the pittman arm, and a spring that applies pressure against the cups to keep the joint snug. Removed old parts and guess what: the old spring was broke. Installed new stuff and steering is much tighter! Now I'm not herding cats as I drive down the road. What a relief!

Now rebuilding carb, then off to brakes....that'll be another learning experience I'm sure.

Chris; Great news. Glad to hear it worked out so well. I'm sure that NAPA can help you with both the carb and brakes parts, too, if you get into a bind. On the other hand, if it drives straight down the road, that kinda takes the fun out of it.
