Front Wheel Bearing ????

Question From huffy47 on Front Wheel Bearing ????

I have a 1999 KIA sportage that I believe needs a new front wheel bearing. As it seems to have a lot of play in it. How hard is it to change and are their any tourqe specs I need to know? also does any one have a diagram of this so I have a reference to look at. Have a garage and lots of tools so all I need is advice. Thanks guys Huffy47

Response From Hammer Time

Here is a TSB on that.

SOURCE: Kia Technician Times
TITLE: Wheel Bearing Adjustment
APPLIES TO: Sportage
SERVICE TIP:
Whether a vehicle is driven on surface streets, highways, or off-road, front wheel bearing adjustment may loosen up over time, resulting in play which may eventually effect brake wear, 4WD hub engagement (if equipped), seal and bearing life, etc.
If you find excessive play, use the adjusting procedure below after making sure bearings and hub are serviceable. Replace defective parts and/or repack bearings as required.
Remove locking screws and plate (4WD) or straighten staked area on adjusting nut collar(2WD) as required. Using Kia SST K00B-5010-FHB, back off adjusting nut one full turn. "Seat" bearings by torquing adjusting nut to 12 lb-ft while turning the hub or wheel. Loosen the adjusting nut one full turn, then retighten "hand tight". Install lock plate and two attaching screws (4WD) or stake adjusting nut collar (2WD).
NOTE: If threaded holes do not line up with holes in lock plate, loosen adjusting nut just enough to make the holes line up.

If you go to alldatadiy you can purchase a subscription for you vehicle. I think a one year is $16.95 or you can get 3 years for $29.95. It blows the Haynes manual out of the water. Has great step by step instructions with pictures. With the alldata, and the mechanics on this site, I've yet to have to take my vehicle to a shop. Although, I give most of the credit to the guys here. They have been my lifeline on many projects and have saved my ass many times!

humming noise while driving

Question From JRobert on humming noise while driving

2000 Kia sephia
over 100k miles

hello, i have a 2000 kia and recently about 4-5 months ago is had a soft humming noise while driving at highway speeds, it has gotten louder resently as i have been putting more miles on it than normal. normal being less than 20 miles a day, and now it is going over 200 miles a weekso the humming noise has gotten noticable now, i got a kia book and it says it could be the drive axels or the wheel bearings but i want to be sure before i tear it apart because it is my only car and i live way to far from any bus routes. the noise is like a slight humming or rubbing and it gets louder at slower speeds any info or ideas would be welcome or if you need any more info. i should add that it doesnt pull to any side or vibrate it just hums, if i had a working car radio i could fix it by turning it up it isnt that loud yet but needs to be fixed

Response From poonamt93

It's probably the wheel bearing.

Response From Sidom

It's really tough without being there but what you are describing does sound like a bearing..

Just make sure to check you tires. The tires can develope a "cupping" or irregulare thread pattern that will sound exactly like a failing bearing on a test drive..........

Response From steve01832

Hi JRobert. Often times an axle bearing will hum in the steer ahead position and turning on one side. If you are driving forward, if you turn the steering wheel to one side and still hear the noise, turn the steering wheel to the other side. If the humming noise stops, it is an axle bearing.

03 Kia Rio Cinco Front End Steering problems….Need Advice PLEASE!!!!!

Question From mkinder on 03 Kia Rio Cinco Front End Steering problems….Need Advice PLEASE!!!!!

I have a 2003 Kia Rio Cinco with Front End Steering Problems ….. I need Advice for repairs PLEASE!!!!!

PROBLEM: While driving 40- 60 mph the car will suddenly PULL/ JUMP/JERK to the right (very dangerous). This is a sporadic occurrence, usually while taking a left hand curve in the road or while braking in a curve. It appears that the problem is in the right front end/wheel area. Also recently I was hearing a grinding/rubbing noise when I turned the steering wheel front that same right front wheel. The car steers/rides smoothly while driving straight making it appear that the alignment is okay.

Currently I have my car at a local (recently certified) Kia Dealership/Mechanics. They have replaced both tie rod ends, both ball joints, with a new front & rear end alignment. Cost $950.00 for labor/parts. STILL HAVING THE SAME PROBLEMS. They’re checking with their Technical support people!?!?! Hope this all makes sense.

PLEASE ANY ADVICE WELCOME!!!!

Thanks in advance

Response From Tom Greenleaf Top Rated Answer

Hmmm! Not mentioned on the repair list is the brake and caliper for that side, wheel bearing, and the condition of the CV joints in the half shaft - all of above could act up with steering, braking and also might behave just going straight ahead?? Except for the wheel bearing(s) those wouldn't show up with a routine alignment either but wheel bearings could be tight enough and bad for an aligment.

This is scary - the shop has missed all this??

2003 Kia Sorento clicking noise

Question From rtonkins on 2003 Kia Sorento clicking noise

2003 Kia Sorento EX, 6 cyl, 130,000 miles

When the vehicle is cold I can drive for about 5 minutes with no noise. As the car heats up slowly a clicking sound develops in the front left side of the car. To me it sounds like a playing card in bicycle spokes. The longer the car is driven, the louder the sound gets and the sound decelerates as the vehicle decelerates. Below 5 miles an hour the sound stops. just before the sound stops the sound changes to what I would describe as a metal clamp around a shaft that is too small. I "think" I vaguely smell a burnt smell after this happens.

I am hearing this very loudly with the driver window down but can hear/ feel it with the window up too.

Any thoughts? (Pray its a cheap fix!!)

Response From Sidom

Tom pretty much covered all the bases. It's tough not being able to hear it. Does the noise change when you apply the brks or if you are turning the wheels?

Whether you do this youself or take it in, you should look at it soon, sometime driving on a problem only makes it more expensive.....

Response From rtonkins

Turning the wheels makes it go away for a short time. Ill pull the wheel off tomorrow and check for frozen brake parts. Thanks for the help. Just hoping its not a transmission going bad.

Response From Sidom

Sounds like it could possibly be a bad bearing. If your left bearing was bad, while driving if you turn to the right. That shifts all the weight to the left and the noise would get louder. If you turn to the left all the weight goes right and the noise would get quieter. This is one way to help diagnose the problem & side.

You can check for play in the wheel while it's in the air but in the early stages of a bearing failure you don't get play so it makes it harder to diagnose.

Also make sure the tires tread isn't "choppy" . Irregular thread can cause a similar noise....

Response From rtonkins

Just thought I would follow up. The noise was the front drive shaft coming from the differential. Need to have the entire unit replaced. Dealer parts wants 800 for the driveshaft assembly and the repair shop cannot find another outlet to get one. OUch!!

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Appreciate the follow up - sorry about the expense,

Kia 2003 clicking noise is too much....I don't worry to it...

(on edit: How was that helpful? Problem was solved and links in you signature and the post aren't allowed. Kindly remove links)

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Hard to say on noises as described. Brakes, wheel bearing or a cv joint. If you are smelling something a caliper may be part frozen and the wheel would be warm or hot vs others. All of the parts that turn need be checked. I've seen rotors get a rust ring where the pads don't hit the last bit on outside make noise and brakes may feel funny. That usually happens when brakes are replace with pads only without tuning rotors (doubt they are thick enough or replacing them.

If you aren't going to fix this yourself a good tech will find it. Being there with you symptoms would really help,

Scraping noise

Question From Monkey on Scraping noise

Hi, i have a kia rio ice, 2004 plate with approx 25000 miles.
Recently there has been an intermittent scraping noise from what appears to be the drivers rear side wheel.
There is no pattern to the noise, i have tried speeding, driving slowly, going over bumps, cornering etc. etc. but this does not make the noise come or go, there is no scraping when braking or when pulling away.
I can even be driving on flat at 10mph or 70mph & it will start for what appears for no reason, then it will go off again.
Any advice please before i take it to the garage & get stung.
Thanks

Response From Loren Champlain Sr Top Rated Answer

Monkey; You should remove that wheel and take a look. If this has drum brakes in the rear, could be a spring or a piece of hardware has come loose. Or, a wheel bearing problem.
As far as getting 'stung', I think you did that when you bought a Kia.

Response From Sidom

Kia's actually aren't too bad for the price range..... I know you're just kidding around.

But what has impressed me with Hyundia/Kia is their tech support. They are they only manufacturer that has a totally free tech sites. Everyone else charge$$$$$.

Their quality has definately improved over time.

If you remember when Hyundia 1st came out in the US back in the 80s...... Now there was a pile of junk. A new Excel handled & drove like a 10 year old B210

Response From Hammer Time

OUCH, low blow.................LOL

Response From Tom Greenleaf

The sting aside - 25,000 miles isn't unusual to need brakes. They need to inspected,
