Question From Guest on wheel bearing assembly

can you not change the bearings out in a hub bearing assembly on a 2002 ford explorer instead of having to replace the whole assembly

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Timken / Wheel Bearing/Hub Assembly-Front
Warranty - 1 YR SP470200 $185.99 Note: 5 stud hub

I only checked for the common 4WD Explorer and that is an assembly and not servicable separately. Only types that list "inner" or "outer" would be available to do separately,

Same part number. The bearings are not servicable. It is replaced as a unit. Somewhere you may be able to find a bearing that will match for a replacement, but the time and effort would not be worth the hassle.

Question From zmasterflex on wheel bearing assembly 99 sebring

Hi all. My friends 99 sebring convertible has a bad wheel bearing (rear) and the mechanic wants 325$ to change it. He can a hold of a replacement bearing for 80-something. He wants me to change it. My question is: is this bearing going to require me to have a press, grinder or bearing puller? or does this vehicle have an easy to replace 'style' bearing? thanks

Response From zmame Top Rated Answer

looks like its a hub assembly should be 4 bolts holding it in. you will also have to remove all the break stuff to inorder to get access to the bearing.

Rumbling Noise and Vibrations in Stearing Wheel

Question From taylorman57 on Rumbling Noise and Vibrations in Stearing Wheel

Year of vehicle 2001
Make of vehicle Pontiac
Model of vehicle Sunfire
Engine size 2.2
Mileage/Kilometers 145,000 miles

My Sunfire makes a loud rumbling noise when driving down the road. The sound is similar to that of a bad tire. There are also vibrations in the steering wheel and pedals.

I have recently replaced the tires and front brakes, both needed to be done. Neither of those quieted the car down. I replaced the front wheel bearing assemblies on both sides of the car and it still isn't quieter.

We raised up the car and "drove it." There was no noise from the tires moving without weight on them.

When I drive straight down the road it makes the noise. If I turn to the left around a curve the sound goes completely quiet. Also if you have your head outside of the car you cannot hear the noise. The sound is definitely coming from the front of the car.

I am at a total loss. I was completely convinced it was one of the wheel bearing assemblies.

Response From Hammer Time

That is likely either a bad strut or stabilizer link or frame bushings.

Response From Discretesignals Top Rated Answer

How about the rear wheel bearings? Did you try raising the rear off the ground and check the rears? Kind of weird that the rumbling noise goes away when you sway the vehicle. Another thing you should check besides what HT pointed out is to be sure that your tires aren't scrubbing from a toe problem.

03 Explorer ABS light on

Question From comnavguy on 03 Explorer ABS light on

2003 Explorer with V-6

Just replaced right side front wheel bearing assembly with new sensor About 6 miles and the ABS light came on. I removed the new sensor and replaced it with the old one. ABS light is still on.

Is there a way to determine which sensor is causing the problem - right front? left front? or the one sensor on top of the rear differential?

Response From Sidom

Like HT said you are going to have to get the codes pulled to know for sure.

If the light wasn't on until you did the work, double check everything. You've already swapped sensors, which is good but at this point doesn't totally eliminate it, also take a look at the new exciter ring for cracks or missing teeth, compare it to the old one make sure it looks the same & has the same tooth count..........

Response From Hammer Time Top Rated Answer

Yes, you have to get the ABS module scanned for codes. Your assuming it's a sensor when it may not be at all.
