can you not change the bearings out in a hub bearing assembly on a 2002 ford explorer instead of having to replace the whole assembly

Same part number. The bearings are not servicable. It is replaced as a unit. Somewhere you may be able to find a bearing that will match for a replacement, but the time and effort would not be worth the hassle.

Hi all. My friends 99 sebring convertible has a bad wheel bearing (rear) and the mechanic wants 325$ to change it. He can a hold of a replacement bearing for 80-something. He wants me to change it. My question is: is this bearing going to require me to have a press, grinder or bearing puller? or does this vehicle have an easy to replace 'style' bearing? thanks

looks like its a hub assembly should be 4 bolts holding it in. you will also have to remove all the break stuff to inorder to get access to the bearing.

My Sunfire makes a loud rumbling noise when driving down the road. The sound is similar to that of a bad tire. There are also vibrations in the steering wheel and pedals.

I have recently replaced the tires and front brakes, both needed to be done. Neither of those quieted the car down. I replaced the front wheel bearing assemblies on both sides of the car and it still isn't quieter.

We raised up the car and "drove it." There was no noise from the tires moving without weight on them.

When I drive straight down the road it makes the noise. If I turn to the left around a curve the sound goes completely quiet. Also if you have your head outside of the car you cannot hear the noise. The sound is definitely coming from the front of the car.

I am at a total loss. I was completely convinced it was one of the wheel bearing assemblies.

That is likely either a bad strut or stabilizer link or frame bushings.

How about the rear wheel bearings? Did you try raising the rear off the ground and check the rears? Kind of weird that the rumbling noise goes away when you sway the vehicle. Another thing you should check besides what HT pointed out is to be sure that your tires aren't scrubbing from a toe problem.

2003 Explorer with V-6

Just replaced right side front wheel bearing assembly with new sensor About 6 miles and the ABS light came on. I removed the new sensor and replaced it with the old one. ABS light is still on.

Is there a way to determine which sensor is causing the problem - right front? left front? or the one sensor on top of the rear differential?

Like HT said you are going to have to get the codes pulled to know for sure.

If the light wasn't on until you did the work, double check everything. You've already swapped sensors, which is good but at this point doesn't totally eliminate it, also take a look at the new exciter ring for cracks or missing teeth, compare it to the old one make sure it looks the same & has the same tooth count..........

Yes, you have to get the ABS module scanned for codes. Your assuming it's a sensor when it may not be at all.
