Question From albqscott on 85 subaru-water pump pulley

I have a 85 Subaru wagon. the pulley for i believe the water pump has come loose on my wagon, all the belts were loose and it caused it to over heat and loose power steering, today i pulled all the belts off, tightened the pulley put the belts back on and tried to start it. Started okay but almost immediately i noticed the pulley was loose again. Any idea why it keeps coming loose, is the pulley bad or something internal, not letting it tighten properly? all the help will be appreciated. thanks

lost in albuquerque

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Is the waterpump bad itself? Check the loose pulley for what it mounts to for the problem,

T

Response From albqscott

as far as i know the pump is fine, it may not even be the water pump pulley, not sure no manual, it looked like it bolts into part of the timing belt, i could see part of the timing belt anyway when i pulled the pulley off

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Whatever that pulley mounts to -- an idler or whatever seems like the problem. If it doesn't tighten up there might be some stripped threads, loose bolts or something you should be able to see,

T

Response From albqscott

it does tighten up, until the car is started then it comes loose right away, im thinking its the main pulley not the water pump

Response From Tom Greenleaf Top Rated Answer

Is this pulley the harmonic balancer? That would be the only one that would turn with nothing attached as it is right on the crankshaft. They are rubber isolated unseen and could have failed. I don't know of that as common but sure needs looking into,

00 dodge caravan water pump

Question From Guest on 00 dodge caravan water pump

Hello. I have a 2000 Dodge Caravan 2.4 that needs a water pump replacement. I've called two shops and both have quoted me in the $400 range. One shop said it's a half a day job.
I've tried looking under the hood and from the ground and could not locate the water pump. That leads me to think that it would be a difficult "do it yourself" job.
Any comments or experiences with this specific job? Is it something that a DIY could do? Or call around for the best price?

Response From Indytech Top Rated Answer

If you have no problem replacing the Timing belt then you
should have no problem with the water pump, as you need to remove
the timing belt to replace the water pump .
I would replace the belt and belt tensioner and the
cam and crank seals that way you will save money on the long run
as a timing belt is best replace at 50-60.000 miles
Two jobs for the price of one the only extra money is the belt, tensioner and seals.
You will have to make sure you are confident in doing this replacement job as if
the timing belt is incorrectly replace it could damage the internal moving parts of your
engine and that is a very costly repair.

coolant system leak

Question From lorijo17 on coolant system leak

i just had a faulty water pump replaced on my 2002 hyundai santa fe 2.7. Brought it home from the garage and it still leaked! Since it ran hot a few times - but not for long and not into the red, some people think i may have caused a cracked head or blown head gasket. Well the car runs perfect. There is no white smoke coming from the exhaust. there is no water in the oil and vice versa. The leak is coming from the water pump area underneath the passenger side. This is an external leak. Can internal leaks in the engine actually leak from underneath the car?

Response From Sidom

If it's still leaking then you need to take it back so it can be rechecked. If it's getting hot you really shouldn't be driving it until it's fixed. You could do more damage to the engine driving it while it's overheating.....

Response From lorijo17

If it's still leaking then you need to take it back so it can be rechecked. If it's getting hot you really shouldn't be driving it until it's fixed. You could do more damage to the engine driving it while it's overheating..... It is not overheating anymore.

Response From Sidom

Keep an eye on the coolant level, if it isn't losing any coolant it's possible the coolant you are seeing was just coolant caught in the sub frame when they did the pump. If that is the case then by now you really shouldn't be seeing any more coolant on the ground. If the "leak" stays at the same rate and the coolant level is going down, then it would be best to take it in to have it rechecked

Response From lorijo17

It is dripping down at a fairly steady rate only when the engine is running.

Got it fixed yesterday. The water pump was bad and he put on the seal correctly so found out a freeze plug came loose. Best thing is that he only charged me 100.00 to take apart the Suv and find and fix that secondary problem.

Get that checked at once! I could just be a flawed gasket with the job but you need to know! DON'T LET IT OVERHEAT AT ALL AS MOST OF THESE WON'T TAKE IT WITHOUT MORE DAMAGE THAN JUST A WATER PUMP!

Question From sarahzimm25 on 94 Camry heat not working, sound of water

Hey there! About 2 weeks ago, I had to have my water pump, a whole bunch of belts replaced in my '94 Camry. Last week, I started hearing the sound of water when I would accelerate, and now another week later, my heat is hardly getting warm. Any help?? None of these were problems before I had to have the water pump replaced, which was done because my coolant was leaking. Thanks in advance!! :)

Response From Hammer Time

Sounds like there is air in the system. It could still have another leak or ir may not have been bled out properly the first time. I would have it filled properly and pressure tested for any more leaks.

Response From sarahzimm25

Would you say this was an error that the mechanic made? I'd sure love to not have to pay MORE for a problem that wasn't there before the new water pump and belts!

Response From Hammer Time Top Rated Answer

Don't say it wasn't there before because the new water pump because it was. If you severely overheated the engine, then you did the damage right them. He can try bleeding more air out of the system but you may have serious internal damage already.

Response From sarahzimm25

Actually, I never experienced any severe overheating. No smoke or the guage going way up or anything like that. I am however definitely certain that there was no sound of water when I accelerated before the new pump was put in, and that was after the second time I had to bring it back because the O-ring was incorrectly put in place, and so even after the first repair, it was still leaking coolant. But following the replacement of the O-ring, no more coolant leak, just the sound of water, and the heat working less than usual. Just trying to figure out what's goin on!

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Already said but I'll concur that there's air in the system and you'll probably find it's low on coolant risking overheating and real damage. Check the level again now at the radiator and at the recovery tank. It's possible that radiator cap on radiator if set up that way isn't working properly such that you may find recovery tank too full and radiator level too low. Set ups with cap on radiator has to hold correct pressure, allow excess to recovery tank and then as engine cools allow return of coolant to radiator and engine - as engine cools and coolant shrinks it should allow sucking back coolant from the recovery tank and always be full,

coolant leaking from the back of the motor.Took the piece off,I can see the flywheel, coolant is leaking from somewhere back up in there. It,s not the heater hoses. It leaks with or without the motor running. Are there freeze plugs or seals back there?
Thanks,
Richard

Response From Hammer Time

There is a pipe under the intake and a few places on the intake that those can leak.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Can't wait for this fix or you'll need a new engine!

TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN
Chrysler Concorde/Dodge Intrepid Coolant Leak – 2.7L (1998-2004)
ASC PART NUMBER(S): WP-9103
CONDITION: A severe coolant leak from the water pump’s weep holes causes the coolant to destroy the
pump‘s bearing, as well as leak into the engine’s oiling system. Catastrophic engine failure can result.
CAUSE: This engine’s water pump is buried beneath the timing cover since it is internally driven off the
engine’s timing chain. Since the front of the pump has direct contact with the engine’s oiling system, the
weep holes have been rerouted. Leaking coolant is channeled back through the pump and into the
engine block. Therefore, if the water pump seal fails, the noticeable leaks will occur as coolant exits the left
side of the engine block just below the thermostat housing and, if severe enough, from the rear of the
engine block, towards the top.

CORRECTION: Be aware of the potential leak points and do not ignore the signs of a leak. It also is
recommended that the water pump be changed whenever servicing the timing chain and/or internal
timing components.

Response From holtrl

Replaced the water pump. Car's back on the road. Thanks for your help.
Thanks again,
Richard

Response From holtrl

thanks I,ll start at the water pump.

Thanks again,

Richard

Don't waste time - go for it now!

Response From holtrl

The water pump is out,it looks fine. I did have water out of the seep hole near the thermostat before. The water running out the back of the engine. There is no water in the oil or oil in the water. If it's not the water pump then what?
Thanks,
Richard

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Again - don't wait and get help to find the source if need be. Pressure testing, mirrors after things are clean may show just where. When found and known by you or with help then you can decide if you have to ability and tools to fix it or get it fixed. It could easily cost you your whole engine!
