I have a 1991 volvo 740 turbo that stalls randomly upon warm up and some times when you rev the engine . I ran a computer diagnostic on it and it gave me a 214 trouble code which is I think an engine speed sensor my question is where is the engine speed sensor

Could possibly mean the camshaft or crankshaft position sensor is bad... personally id unplug battery for a bit to clear the comp and go from there ( hopeing it wouldnt contenue )

Hello all,
Any advice you have on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

I have an old 1988 Volvo 740 with over 130,000 miles. Recently the brakes were making grinding noises, so I brought into a mechanic that I have been to before.

As it turns out, my car needs both front and rear rotors, brake pads and a front sway bar (as the current one is broken).

The total bill (with labor) comes out to around $795. I was curious if this sounds reasonable, any insight you have would be great!

I agree with these guys completely. That's just around or a little less than what we'd charge to do the job. As someone said already, but I'm reiterating, it's not always about finding the cheapest repair around. Sometimes with those cheap repairs you sacrifice service and knowledge. There's a really common misconception that service shops tend to mark up the costs much more than necessary, but that fee doesn't seem too radical at all. Again, as another poster mentioned, it would cost more for you to do it yourself probably and wouldn't be as good a job.

Ethan, price does not sound far fetched at all! New rotors,pads, stabilizer, having all the right tools- including knowledge- to do the job properly, is i m o, pretty reasonable! h

Thanks for the quick reply and your insight, it really is most appreciated. I know a good deal about fixing up mopeds and some about motorcycles, but when it comes to cars, I'm a bit out of my element!

Could you (or anyone else) let me know if this breakdown of the prices makes sense?

Brake Rotors - $80.00 per Rotor (need 4)
Labor for Rotor Replacement - $95.00
Brake Pads - $86.00 per set of 2 pads
Labor for Brake Pad Replacement - $95.00
Front Sway Bar - $45.00
Labor for Sway Bar Replacement - $55.00

This comes out to $782.00

From what I can see these people did this at a very competitive price.
It may even be a bit less then what I would have charged. LOL
Good for you Ethan; by doing this check; hopefully you've gained some confidence in this repair facility.
Just remember it’s not always about the cheapest repairs to be had; the quality of said repairs should take a big role in your choice of repair facility.

These guys are right, you didn't get ripped off. Your parts are pricey and you got a good rate. With this car and future cars, its not a bad idea to pull off a wheel once in a while and check the thickness of the pads visually. Can't always get a good look through the back of the rim. With the age of the car you probably were due for rotors anyhow, but they usually squeak a good bit prior to grinding out. Thanks for not compromising on your brakes and letting a good shop repair them properly. You can drive safely knowing you can stop now.

Ethan: This car has unusually expensive brake parts! At dealer wholesale prices and now long ago (retired as well now) I had a Volvo that needed the works. Worse - that one needed all four calipers at some unreal expense so I tried for a rebuild kit to do it myself and found pistons (four each) were not good so that failed at lowering costs.

It cost me about $2,200 in wholesale prices (no markup) to do that job! That was perhaps 20 years ago! I felt so bad about that cost (forget the labor - I wrote that off as learning) I showed, discussed with owner what a holocaust the price of stuff was getting to be and all mandatory. I can't with any conscience let a car go out with less than safe brakes. Gave the person copies of my actual costs and thereafter cars with stuff so expensive customers need be forewarned for planning.

In short - it doesn't sound that out of control at all,

The plastic panel on the inside of the driver's side door is broken. The windows and locks work fine but the panel sometimes comes loose and gets caught when I try to open the door and it is really hard to get it unstuck (and probably does further damage). But I can't afford ANYTHING in terms of getting it fixed. Can I use some kind of adhesive to keep it in place? Or is there something else I can do? Help!

You can't really use an adhesive but what you could do is just run a long screw right through it into the metal door frame. Also make sure the hinge hasn't worn out causing the door to drop down and move closer to the pillar.
