Alternator/voltage regulator malfunction on 1997 Lexus

Question From ADISINGH on Alternator/voltage regulator malfunction on 1997 Lexus

I have a 1997 Lexus ES300 6cylinder Engine
I had my alternator/voltage regulator tested at AutoZone while in the car. The test indicated that the Voltage regulator was malfunctioning. I put in a new alternator/voltage regulator and had it tested again. The test still said the voltage regulator was malfunctioning. I took the old alternator/voltage regulator into the store for a test. It passed. Do I have a wiring problem? The battery tested okay.

Response From Discretesignals Top Rated Answer

How is the regulator failing? Is it over charging, undercharging, or not charging at all? Battery light on? What is the voltage at the alternator output lug with the engine running? What is the voltage at the battery terminals with the engine running? Have you made sure the battery is fully charged and checks good? Are your battery connections clean and tight?

Need some data please.

Response From ADISINGH

The voltage regulator is undercharging . The voltage of the battery when the engine is running is 12.8 volts. Is it possible that a loose or worn belt is causing the problem? Or corrosion on terminals and or wires?

Response From Discretesignals

Anything is possible. Check the belt tension. If good, check the voltage at the output lug of the alternator.

Does the charge warning light come on in the dash when you turn the ignition on with the engine off?

Response From ADISINGH

i FINALLY HAD TIME TO THOROUGHLY CLEAN ALL OF THE POSTS AND CLAMPS AND CONNECTORS ON THE BATTERY AND WIRES. I HAD THE ALTERNATOR/VOLTAGE REGULATOR TESTED AND EVERYTHING WAS NORMAL. HURRAH

Question From 1959owner on voltage regulator

1959 Lincoln changed from generator to alternator, do you need a different voltage regulator? Battery died when voltage regulator is hooked up. unhook voltage regulator and battery stays charged. Put in new battery.

Response From re-tired Top Rated Answer

Yes you will need a regulator that is compatable with the type alt you installed . I would adapt a GM style one wire alternator . It self regulated with an internal regulator . As the name implies ,you need only one wire hooked to it.

Ya - They have them but barely worth it. For 4 more bucks you can get the whole alternator! Yes - you have to remove it to replace a regulator (bit tricky for a first timer) - be sure that's all it is before doing just that if so,

Question From gigirl on Voltage Regulator?

2001 Pontiac Grand Prix 3.1
The dashboard lights get brighter, the heater blows harder with acceleration. Service Engine Soon Light is on. Alternator Checks Good, Battery tests "weak". Does this sound like a bad voltage regulator?

Response From Hammer Time Top Rated Answer

You need to get a voltage reading at the time the light is on. It may be overcharging.

Response From gigirl

What voltage should it be reading?

Response From Hammer Time

Between 13.5 and 14.8 volts.
