Engine shaking and fault codes.

Showing 2 out of 2 Posts
Question From Ethangrizzle1 on Engine shaking and fault codes.

So I just bought a 2001 Volkswagen GTI and it seems sluggish. and the engine shakes. My friend told me it could be a broken engine mount. I also have some fault lights appear on the dashboard. The abs and a triangle with exclamation mark with a circle around it as well as the CEL. Can someone diagnose the problem? Also there is an exhaust leak mid ways back from the front of car to the back.

Response From Hammer Time Top Rated Answer

Nobody can do anything until you have your codes read and post the numbers here.

The ABS and the CEL will be two separate problems.

speedo cable oil leak

Question From amandamay44 on speedo cable oil leak

1989/90 Volkswagen GTI convertible 1800 75,000

My speedo stopped working, so my mechanic replaced it with a new one, he has now done this three times, three new cables, each time,
I have dripping oil on my right foot. This last time, this happened then the speedo flickered and stopped working and the dripping stopped.
Help, my mechanic and the RAC men say they have never heard of such a thing, and nobody knows what do do next, we can't just keep
fitting brand new speedo cables??

Kind regards
amanda

Response From Sidom

I would have to look at a diagram but some cables do have oil going thru them, if this is the case on this system there should be some type of o ring at the speedo head to seal it. It might have popped out on the 1st install....

Or you could go with plan B

Just a thought

I think when this is all said and done; you’ll find that a seal has failed or was not properly reinstalled, if installed at all, during the first cable replacement.
Speedo cables are made up of small strands of wire twisted together like a metal rope. What might be happening is; that when the cable is turning, oil from the transmission is getting past the seal and because of the twists in the cable that oil is literally being screwed up the cable and leaking out the speedo clock.
Your best bet is to go to your local dealer’s parts department and have them show you an exploded view of all the bits & pieces that make up the speedometer. Look for some form of seal; which could actually be at either end of the cable, part of the speedo drive (at trans) or the speedo clock?

Dan.

Need info about MK 4 Golf, Jetta, Passat EngineMK 4 Golf, Jetta, Passat 2.8 Liter 16 Valve VR6 Engine Assembly - Seized

Question From lolpetnannycb on Need info about MK 4 Golf, Jetta, Passat EngineMK 4 Golf, Jetta, Passat 2.8 Liter 16 Valve VR6 Engine Assembly - Seized

Hi, on Ebay, I am trying to sell my son's MK 4 Golf, Jetta, Passat 2.8 Liter 16 Valve VR6 Engine Assembly. The engine was altered by a car junky who owned the car before my son. Water got up into the engine and caused it to seize.
I would love to find out:
1. approximate weight and dimensions so I prospective buyer would be able to get a fairly accurate idea of the shipping cost.
2. Fair Price to start the auction and a Buy It Now Price
3. ANY info that a prospective buyer would be attracted to regarding this type of engine, that would be WONDERFUL. I certainly don't know anything about engines.

Thanks sooo much for any help you can give me!!!
.
This is info I have listed:
•Mileage: approximately 100,000
•Engine Code: AFP
•Compatible with: MK 4 GTI, Jetta, Passat, 99-03 VR6'S
It is solely the buyers responsibility to determine compatibility with their vehicle
•This genuine VW part is in good used condition but is seized. (It is a good project engine because it just has seized pistons and rings.)

•Local pick-up possible, or Buyer pays shipping. Email to discuss shipping arrangements.

Seized pistons and rings. Great to bore out and add new pistons and rings.
"This Engine Block was pulled from a 2001 Volkswagen GTI VR6. The Head is in great shape. Short block has pistons seized. Everything else is there except the oil pan Needs pistons and rings. I'm not really into AM high perf so as far as the engine goes, unless it's something that builders are looking for, since it's seized there really won't be much value to it..

One thing I will mention just in case you don't sell a lot on ebay. I just read your ad and unless you've actually gone thru this engine and verified the stuff you are listing thats "good" and in "great shape", you are really setting yourself up for one big charge back....especially if you are using Paypal...
You would be surprised what else can go south when an engine seizes or some of that stuff might not of been in such great shape to begin with....

Unless you got something special, I would just try to get rid of it locally and avoid the possible headaches...... If it is worth something, stick with the ad but remove all the "fluff" that you haven't actually checked out and know to be true or this one will comeback to bite you......

Response From Discretesignals

Outside dimensions? That can be measured with a tape measure.

The weight can be found at a weight station. Look in your local phone book. Weigh a truck without and with the engine in the bed. Subtract the two and you have the approximate weight of the engine assembly.

Call some of the local salvage yards in your area and ask them if they have VW 2.8L laying around and how much one would cost. Deduct from the price what you assume it would cost to fix the problem and that will give you a good baseline what it is worth.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

It's been altered so that kills it's value alone.

Just how did water get ingested? If flooded (high water) and started with plugs in IMO whole engine is scrap or could be AND if other water damage car is just body parts.

Sounds like you just want to sell the engine with really no actual knowledge of what may be good still. If out of car now what is the situation of where it is and how stored if you do think anything is saleable? If just left outside that alone if things apart and water in it makes it just dead metal.

I can't tell what about it and suggest unless you are far away from any major area to just call a local salvage yard. Depending on where it may cost you or get a few bucks to come get it,
