1992 Isuzu Trooper sparking.

Question From mikeraydj on 1992 Isuzu Trooper sparking.

I just bought a 1992 Isuzu Trooper. I seems to run strong with a V6 3.2 liter engine, standard tranny, and over 200,000 miles on it. I have noticed that somewhere on the engine I am hearing an intermittent sparking or snapping sound when the engine is running. Does anyone have any ideas as to what may be causing this? Also my speedometer intermittently works. Does the 1992 use a sensor or cable for this? Thanks for your help.

Response From Discretesignals Top Rated Answer

When it is dark outside look around the engine while it is running. You might be able to see spark leakage if that is causing your snapping noise. Usually the snapping noise will happen at the same time you hear the engine miss.

It uses a vehicle speed sensor.

Response From mikeraydj

Thanks for the help. I found the spark. It is arcing on the coil pack for the #6 cylinder so I will need to replace the coil. Does anyone know where the speed sensor is located on my vehicle? As my speedometer is working intermittently.
Thanks again.

Response From Discretesignals

If you have spark popping out of the coil, you might want to go ahead and check your plugs and replace your plug wires. If the wires or plugs are worn out or if the terminals in the wires are corroded, you'll pop another hole in your new coil.

speed sensor is on the extension housing of the transmission.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Can you narrow this down some as noises are tough enough. Electrical noise or some other "snapping" noise is a pretty wide field.

Speedo cable or not. I'd even have to look to see. Electrical snapping is usually high voltage items like secondarys for spark - plugs, wires, cap, rotor etc.

Cables for speedo failures can "whirr" hmmmm or other but wouldn't call that "snapping" ??

Question From zmasterflex on Vehicle Speed Sensor Issue

1996 Isuzu Oasis (same as honda odyssey) 2.2L.

Greetings all. Instrument cluster fuse blew 2 months ago I first replaced it now. Check engine light comes on,
diagnostic says code is for VSS. I replaced the VSS today but the light didn't go off. In the past I have just disconnected the battery to turn the check engine light off. Today that isn't working. Is there something different about the VSS code that needs to be shut off by the computer? or is it because I drove for two months with the speedometer off? Inspection is before the end of the month, any help would be appreciated before I have to pay for another diagnostic.
THANKS SO MUCH!!!!

Response From DanD Top Rated Answer

Is the speedo working now?
There are a few different scenarios that maybe causing this.
- If the speedo is working now; it may take three or more drive cycles, without a fault occurring before the PCM will turn the light off. A drive cycle consists of driving at varied speeds, at or above 60klm an hour with the engine reaching operating temperature, stopping the vehicle and turning the engine off. That is one drive cycle.
- There’s possibly another problem with the system and the light is on because a different fault has been detected? In other words the PCM has set a second code dealing with whatever, since the last time the codes were read?
- If the speedo’s not working; then it’s still broke (sorry for stating the obvious). You’ve change out a good sensor, when the problem lies in the wiring, instrument cluster or the PCM?
With the light staying on, means the problem is a hard fault/code; meaning something is broken right now and the PCM can see or thinks it sees a fault.
Hard faults are usually fairly easy to diagnose; by going step by step through a set test procedure, you will come across the cause of the fault.
Not like a soft fault/code where the problem is intermittent and may take one, two or more days worth of driving before the code sets again; turning on the light.
Intermittent faults are a technician’s nightmare; what do you repair/replace if the fault is not there with the test equipment connected?
It’s kind of like watching paint dry or waiting for that light bulb to burn out in your bathroom; leaving you in the dark, at the worse possible time. You know it’s going to happen; you just don’t now when or at times why?

Dan.

Response From zmasterflex

Thanks for the quick reply. The speedo was working even before I swapped out the VSS. Now that you mention this drive cycle business, I probably didn't even need the new sensor I guess I just needed to drive start etc. What I don't understand is why would the light stay on longer for the VSS, more than any other fault, in the past the check engine light has gone out quickly after fixing problems. Thansk for the help, inspection is this week so I'll get another diagnostic. So long.

90 isuzu trooper i-tec stalling

Question From waldow777 on 90 isuzu trooper i-tec stalling

Ok. I just bought this old trooper and in ran good on the test drive. 50 miles later it started to spit and sputter while loosing power. Check engine light came on then went off. So I turn the key off and back on. It runs perfect for a while, then the same thing again?
The battery, plug wires, cap and rotor and plugs are all new. What resets when the ignition is turned off then back on?

Any help would be greatly appreciated....

Response From Hammer Time

Have the codes read first.

Response From waldow777

Im getting a code 4 and 12. What do they mean? I got the codes by connecting the two wires under coin tray together.

Response From Hammer Time Top Rated Answer

The code 12 flashes at the start and the end and 4 is not a legitimate codes.
