leaking oil from all 4 exhaust ports

Showing 8 out of 8 Posts
Question From davidof on leaking oil from all 4 exhaust ports

i have just done a top end rebuild on a 2004 1.3 el daihatsu sirion. new valves, valve stem oil seals and gaskets, when the engine was put back together a pressure test was done and there was 180 psi across all 4 bores, so the pistons was fine. when the car was started it was ok for the first few minutes then started smoking blue white smoke, not just a little bit but PLUMES of it. i removed the cat/manifold and started the car again and there was lots of oil coming from all four exhaust ports as soon as it started. the head is straight, no cracks, all torqued down correctly, and gasket on as it should be. i am now totally baffled as to why there is this much oil escaping into the bores and coming out of all 4 exhaust ports. ANY HELP WILL BE VERY MUCH APPRECIATED THANKS.

Response From Hammer Time

Yep, that's what happens when you do only the top end on a high mileage engine. The bottom end can't handle the higher compression

Response From davidof

and there is only 60 000 on the clock

Response From Discretesignals

Why was the cylinder head overhauled if it had only 60K on it? Good compression doesn't tell you the condition of the oil control rings. Oil in the cylinders will also raise the compression.

Response From Tom Greenleaf Top Rated Answer

Comment: With all that oil this would have good compression probably without rings at all! Could still have very excessive blow-by even with low miles just less likely but so is needing to do the upper end over?

IDK - Is PCV system sucking in way too much too fast? Concept should separate oil from vapor but only to a reasonable amount,

T

Response From Discretesignals

Was this overheated? If so, that might explain why it is burning oil now. Overheating it really bad will take out the rings. How much blow by in the crank case?

Response From davidof

but thats the strange thing, done a compression test and it was 180 psi across all 4 cylinders, the car has never over heated, theres not that much oil in the top cover, and even took it apert again to see if the valve stem oil seals were wrong but they were all ok

Response From davidof

but thats the strange thing, i done a compression test and it was 180 psi across all 4 cylinders

91 GMC 5.7 Engine smoking

Question From mikkos on 91 GMC 5.7 Engine smoking

Hi all I am new here
I have a perplexing problem with my GMC k1500.
It appears my 5.7 GMC engine starting smoking after sitting for a few months. I have checked the compression and reading between 150 and 160 on all cylinders. However, when I removed the plugs the two cylinders on the passenger side closest to the firewall do not appear to be a tan color more of a dark grey but not oil soaked. Engine idles ok. When I step on the gas pedal smoke goes not totally away but becomes significantly less, it is when I let off the gas pedal it smokes a lot. It does not have the heavy blue smoke but it smells a little like burning oil. I am not sure if I overlooked something simple or not but any help would be appreciated.

Response From Hammer Time

That engine is pretty notorious for wearing valve guides and the sitting around would dry out the valve seals so I would suspect your looking at a valve job now. Replacing the valve seals may give you temporary relief but the problem will likely return.

Response From mikkos

I went to do the valve seals and made an adapter to pressurize the cylinders. I place the cylinder to TDC and I hear air leaking. It did this on two cylinders I tested 1 of the cylinders I mentioned in the previous post and one of the ones that the spark plugs was burning perfect. Am I missing something here. What pressure shoud I charge the cylinder with to prevent the vales from falling into the cylinders. Very confused. Any help you could provide would be of great value to me.

Response From Hammer Time

TDC isn't as important as making sure you are on the compression stroke. If you just watch the valves and make sure they are both closed you will be OK. The air pressure will probably force the piston back down anyway. Having it at TDC will catch the valve if you drop it though. I use full pressure which is usually over 150PSI. Once you back off the rockers you know they are closed anyway. The leaking could be just burnt valves.

Response From mikkos Top Rated Answer

Well the oil drain port was plugged closest to the firewall. So I was able to unclog that. After getting both the intake and exhaust valve springs off the exhaust valve seal was completely broken and the others are really hard and brittle. The Flat O Ring was missing on the exhaust, and on the intake valve it is broken. The other thing I noticed is the Valve Stem oil seals are the umbrella type but the intake one has little compression rings around it that must hold it tight to the Valve guides. The replacements I have, do not have these compression rings. DO I need to have the seals with the compression rings??? I am assuming I can buy the flat O-Rings as well at NAPA or somewhere like that.
Would that oil drain port being plugged cause more smoking? I read on another post that this was another persons trouble and just unclogging that oil drain port relieved most of the smoking issues.

Response From Hammer Time

It's all in the quality of the parts you buy. If you can find FelPro brand, they will probably be the best seal to use.

Response From mikkos

Thank you for the advice and tips. Just finished and startd it up and it's ot smoking anymore. I think it was a combination of the plugged oil drain port and the fact that the umbrella seal was missing onthe valves closest to the firewall. All is good for ow.

Response From Hammer Time

Your probably right. Glad to hear you got it resolved.

Response From mikkos

Thanks all,
Especially HammerTime, people devoting their time to assist others is greatly appreciated, and not easy to come by. SO thanks alot.

Response From Hammer Time

We really appreciate the rare thanks that we get here. Thank you

Response From Sidom

You sure want those ports free. It would have to be clogged pretty good to get standing oil sitting on the seals but if that was the case it would definitely make it smoke more.....

You need to take HTs advise here and get the right parts. This is a lot of work to try a cheap short cut that doesn't work out. I know the feeling, you got it apart and just want to get it back together. But if you can possibly wait......get the right quality parts... It'll be better in the long run.....

Response From mikkos

Thanks again, this is the first time I am doing valve seals so I am a little nervous. I will suck it up and give it a shot.

Thanks again

Response From Sidom

You could put some rope in the cyl & carefully rotate it until it's tight.... This will hold the valves up.

Of course it's critical to make sure you are coming up on the compression stroke before you start this...

Response From Hammer Time

Make sure you use a magnet to remove and replace those keepers. You really don't want to drop any. Once you compress the spring a little, tap the top of the compressor with a small hammer to break the spring away from the keepers.

noise from rocker cover on mondeo

Question From eddie lane on noise from rocker cover on mondeo

I HAVE A 03 MONDEO 1800 ZETEC PETROL I ONLY HAVE HAD THE CAR FOR 3 MONTHS AS IT WAS LAID UP AND NOT USED FOR 12 MONTHS. THE IS A TAPPING NOISE COMING FROM INSIDE THE ROCKER COVER. AT FIRST I THOUGHT IT WAS A BIGEND RATTLE BUT WHEN I HAD A GOOD LOOK FOUND IT WAS TOP END.I HAVE TAKEN THE ROCKER COVER OFF TO CHECK THE CAMSHAFTS ARE OK THE BUCKET TAPPETS ARE OK.CHECKED THE GAPS ON THE INLET AND EXHAUST AND THEY ARE OK.THOUGHT IT MITE BE THE SWIRLS IN THE INLET MANIFOLD SO HAD A LOOK THEY ARE ALL OK NONE HAVE BROKE OFF.
SO AT THE MOMENT I AM PULLING MY HAIR OUT TRYING TO SORT IT OUT.WHEN I TOOK THE ROCKER COVER OFF THE WAS A BIT OF THICK GUNK IN IT.DO YOU THINK WITH IT STANDIG FOR 12 MONTHS AN OIL WAY TO ONE OF THE TAPPETS IS BLOCKED AND THE IS NOT ENOUGH OIL GETTIG TO ONE OF TAPPETS I HAVE CHANGED THE OIL TWICE AND FILTER. THE CAR HAS ONLY DONE 48,000 MILES I WAS GOING TO GIVE IT A GOOD ENGINE FLUSH AND PUT MORE OIL IN.ANYONE GOT ANY IDEAS PLEASE.THANKS EDDIE

Response From Tom Greenleaf

12 months improperly stored is a long time. low miles you might correct this with frequent oil changes - no additives or tricky magic in a bottle as new oil has what it needs. You said you saw blade, the engine's enemy but oil changes more frequently can clear some of that up.

Good luck,

T

Response From eddie lane

i took the car to the ford main dealer to have a quick look at the engine.never took it into the work shop just came out to have a listern.and he said he thinks it is a piston i was a bit surprised as it drives
superb compression is 140 on all cylinders.driving me up the wall.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Shoot! All cylinders having even compression if checked right is a great sign. The long rest probably caused something to stick vs broken mechanical something unless seen.

When was oil changed? Seems sticky and plain changing it as said can fix it.

Story: Bought an awesome car once all sticky w noisy engine so nice was willing to repair it. Several oil changes fixed it and went on to God knows how many more miles to friends with overdoing oil changing,

T

Response From eddie lane

i have changed the oil twice in the past 3 months.it is ok when you first start it from cold you can here the noise when it gets warm.tom are you in boston usa i am in liverpool which is famous for the beatles.thanks eddie

Response From Tom Greenleaf

It may have a mechanical problem but you've had mixed opinions so far. Noises are tough over the web so use judgement.

Response From Hammer Time

Somebody wants their own private helper....

That's what the forum is for so everyone gets the benefits.

Response From eddie lane

do you reckon a big end shell will make a noise that it sounds like it is coming from to end.just going to take rocker cover off and run and se if oil is getting to the top.report later on.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Suggest crank engine and disable start for the first try. Man - some of these can spray oil not like older American Iron engines with a valve cover off.

Have helper at the ready,

T

Response From eddie lane Top Rated Answer

i took the rocker cover off and run engine to see that oil was getting to the top of engine.i had a bright idea to stop oil spraying every were i put some old rags around engine.i asked my son to start the engine and guess what happend one of the rags moved and got trapped under the inlet cam.so i bent 4 valves had to take the head off lap 16 valves in new valve stem oil seals head gasket and all the work that goes with it.so when it was all in bits checked every thing which and guess what every thing was ok so it has to be the bottom half.the only thing is trying to get the parts as you can not get shells anywear.another problem

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Sorry to hear that rags cause such a show! If problem is exactly the same still AND you noted some sludge in there then I'd probably just keep changing oil unless it doesn't improve soon then get help to isolate the noise before it does any more harm,

T

Response From Discretesignals

Lucky you weren't wearing a tie...that would have been horrible.
