1996 Mazda MX-6 Headlamp turn signals issue

Showing 6 out of 6 Posts
Question From horlicks_1989 on 1996 Mazda MX-6 Headlamp turn signals issue

Hello,

I recently purchased a 1996 Mazda MX-6. There is a problem with the headlights. The low beam suddenly stopped working, it only switches on when the left turn signal is turned on. The high beams work, but cut out when the left turn signal is on. What could it be? I was told it could be the headlamp switch and rushed ahead and bought a used turn/wiper (combined) replacement part. Would replacing it fix this problem or is it an issue with wiring.

Thanks

Response From Hammer Time

Sounds like a bad combination switch. All those functions are all incorporated into that one switch.

Response From horlicks_1989

So the complete replacement should work?

Response From Hammer Time

We don't generally change parts on assumptions. We physically test the wiring but the odds are good with yours.

Response From horlicks_1989

The mechanic tested the contacts and suggested the headlamp switch. I'll see if it works.

Thanks for your feeback!

Response From Hammer Time Top Rated Answer

The headlamp switch is the combination switch
I don't know about a used one though. There can be many different ones depending on the car's options.

99 Mazda B2500 p/u;how to replace front headlamp/bulb

Question From indulgeress on 99 Mazda B2500 p/u;how to replace front headlamp/bulb

I sure would be grateful if someone could educate me on how to remove or at least loosen the headlamp, then replace the bulb on my little pick-up.I can't find clips like on ford ranger(very similar to Mazda for parts, etc.. I'm told). Also, the light over the odometer on my dash is out, but all the other dash lights work; turn signals, cig lighter, wipers, all good. I'd appreciate any info on these issues. Thanks

Response From Tom Greenleaf

This can't use sealed beams can it? Really doubt that so you go from the back for the headlight bulbs. Maybe a clip or not to squeeze or remove but basically you push a little and turn counter clockwise to remove socket. Don't touch bulbs with fingers, use paper or something dry and clean, replace and reinstall. Yes some are placed in a real pain in the butt location to even touch and require moving things to get a good shot at them,

Try this vid

Seems on this one the plastic piece covers the clips and you can't see them until removed. Might help a bit. Not sure if your dash uses replaceable bulbs or not, but if it does you would need to pull your instrument cluster and change it. Common thing for lights on them to burn out but I can't recall off the top of my head when Ford/Mazda did away with making them serviceable.

Turn signal troubles ??

Question From cjkuzio on Turn signal troubles ??

I have a 1990 Mazda B4000 with turn signal problems. The right turn signal works fine but the left doesn't. Both front and rear bulbs light (In desperation I replaced both bulbs with new ones even though the old ones worked ...) I had the truck out the other day and while manually flipping the lever up and down I noticed it making the normal clicking sound. I tried it and it worked. Five minuets later when I left the store it stopped working again....I looked around on the web to see if I could come up with a solution but had no luck. There was talk about flasher units but from what I understood the flasher worked for the left and right signal. Is it possible there are two flasher units for the turn signals ????. The hazard lights work fine...

Any HELP would be GREATLY appreciated...

Thanks

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Do the bulbs light but not blink or not light with just turn signal?

Flasher should be the same for left or right.

You might be able to swap directional flasher for the hazzard flasher for a test.

If the don't light with the request from lever than it's likely a problem in the steering column,

SORRY about that last post I screwed up.....When I engage the turn signal the bulbs do light but do not blink. I'll give the hazard flasher unit a try and see what happens....I checked all the other lights ...cornering and everything else seems ok...The brightness from one side to the other seems the same... that is when the right side isn't doing the bright flash and is dimmer...It's dark out now and I just came in from checking things out. I turned the headlights on and noticed that the indicator light on the dash for the left signal is lit (not blinking) when the signal isn't engaged...

Thanks guys for your response,

Carl

Response From DanD

Both you & Tom are right that there is only one flasher for right & left turn and in this case the four ways also use the same flasher.
Common sense tells us that it can’t be the flasher but for some reason it usually is.
For whatever reason when the left side is on by itself, it’s either drawing to much or not enough current flow to trigger the unit to flash?
Now if the left side looks brighter or dimmer then the right or if a side or cornering light isn’t working on the left; find the reason for that first. But if both sides look the same, try the flasher; it may just be weak?

Brakelight fuses keep blowing on 1986 Mazda B2000 pickup

Question From lablady on Brakelight fuses keep blowing on 1986 Mazda B2000 pickup

Help! We can't figure out why the brakelight fuses (15 amp) keep blowing on our pickup. We used to get a few brakes in before they blew, now when we're replacing the fuses, they're blowing right then and there. Any suggestions?? Need to resolve this ASAP as this is on my husband's work truck and he HAS to have the brakelights working.

Many thanks!

lablady

Response From DanD Top Rated Answer

Does this fuse only blow while applying the brakes or as soon as you put the fuse in?
The wiring diagram for this truck shows that the horn and turn signals are also on this circuit. The wire leaving the fuse box feeding these different circuits is a white wire with a blue tracer (stripe).
Looking for a short to ground at times is like looking for a needle in a haystack.
I would try disconnecting things like the brake light switch, horn relay and the turn signal switch; one at a time and checking if the fuse will hold or not.
With some luck this may narrow down your search.
Dan.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Just a thought: (caution LOL) See how the sockets look corrosion wise for the brake lights. I live in the rust belt of USA and that crap can drive you nuts. New sockets are available if you think that is the problem. Hope it's just that simple, T

Response From lablady

Tom,

It was also suggested by the auto parts store person to check the light sockets for corrosion, loose wires, bare wires, etc.. He did check and didn't find anything. But then after his check, the fuses would blow upon inserting them. He thinks he may have made the problem worse somehow by checking the wires. My husband then replaced the whole left rear signal package (w/one from a salvage yard which was much cleaner) - last night. No corrosion on the old one, but one of the wires on the old "package" was chafed. Initially, we thought that was what it was because then the brake lights worked (the fuse was holding). Then, he went on to investigate his horn (button was sticking and wasn't working all the time). Thinking that the horn problem may be related to the brake light problem after reading Dan's reply, he partially dismantled horn/steering wheel and all seemed to be fine, replaced the brake light fuse and it was working until today (from last night) when he tested the horn. The horn worked fine, drove a short distance, tried the horn again and it didn't work and when he got home, he looked at the brake light and the fuse was blown again. One thing he hasn't tried to investigate yet is the turn signal links. That's next.

Thank you for your insights and help! We'll keep you and Dan updated.

Thanks again!

lablady and husband

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Right now I think the horn stuff is the problem and may require taking the steering wheel off which will require a puller to even look at the items in most cars, T

Response From DanD

Keep working at it you'll find the problem.

Response From lablady

Dan,

Sorry, I was mistaken. The pickup is a 1986 model. Would this diagram hold true for a 1986 Mazda B2000 pickup? My husband thinks the short might be in the horn (horn hasn't been working). He didn't put that thought together until after reading your response. After putting in a fuse last night which actually didn't blow right away, he tested the horn this morning and it worked for that test but now the brake lights aren't working again. And now the horn isn't working again. Seems like there may be a connection, but how to repair it? The turn signal has always worked and is still working. He's going to go through your suggestions, one at a time.

Thank you!

lablady and husband
