96 mpv timing belt slipping

Question From unknowns-shadow on 96 mpv timing belt slipping

i have a mazda mpv 96 lv and the timing belt keeps slipping. it has a new timing belt. tensioner. when i drive it for 1k or so it starts to get bad. im just wondering if anyone has had this issue

Response From Hammer Time Top Rated Answer

Timing belts do not slip. They are cog-ed belts.

If your belt is actually jumping time which I find very hard to believe, not only would it be not drivable after jumping just one tooth but would highly likely do permanent valve damage. That would mean that one of the pulleys is coming apart to cause that.

Response From unknowns-shadow

it jumped 4 teeth. not sure what to buy for it. but im guessing that the engine is stuffed now

Response From Hammer Time

Maybe you should have it done professionally and you wouldn't have these problems if it's not too late already.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

If you can count the four teeth (off) it sure isn't good. Like HT said - get it right as it's only your whole engine at stake,

2000 Mazda 323F Sport - Broken Timing Belt, worth fixing??

Question From butzie on 2000 Mazda 323F Sport - Broken Timing Belt, worth fixing??

Hello,

I have a 2000 Mazda 323F Sport. It's 1.8 L engine with approx 65K miles on it. The car has just died, and on a brief inspection a mechanic has told me that the timing belt tensioner has broken. I am now unsure what to do. I still owe £1800 on a loan so I don't really want to write it off completely. I would be willing to spend up to £700 pounds fixing it.

So, I was wondering if anyone has encountered a similar fault on this type of vehicle, and if so, could you speculate what the extent of the damage might be...and therefore the cost of the repairs. Guesswork I realise...but any educated guesses would be much appreciated.

Many thanks.

it really all depends if when your belt broke..

if you bent valves or damaged top of pistons i can

tell you i have seen on my brothers honda where his
engine timing belt broke and he simply replaced it and

all was OK!! really it depends if it broke while you were

turning at very little engine rpm like in the case of

my brothers honda then you might be ok now if it broke

while on the highway or motorway at much higher

engine rpms then you might of bent valves and done

some other damage as well

it all depends when it broke at low or

high rpms if your egine has major or little to no damage..

Response From Guest

thanks - it was pretty low rpm. In fact, since it was the tensioners that broke, it started to make noise just before so I took my foot right off and was only doing about 15 mph. Thanks for the response,

low rpms your OK!!! my cousins broke in

98 mazda protege 1.8l timing belt

Question From dannyboy98 on 98 mazda protege 1.8l timing belt

Need some help please. I'm into my friends 98 mazda protege es 1.8l doing the water pump and timing belt. I'm running into 2 issues that are beating me up. I know I shouldn't be doing this without a shop but my friend is in desperation and I am good with engines. Problem #1 I hit was with the crankshaft sleeve, I can't get the retaining bolt loose. Problem #2 is I can't find timing marks on the head for the camshaft and there's multiple marks on the gear. If you can help with either of these problems I'd greatly appreciate it. Just putting it out there.

Response From DanD

For the crank bolt you could try buying/renting an electric impact gun it might be strong enough to loosen the bolt? If that’s not feasible for you; you could remove the starter motor to gain access to the flywheel gear and then use some form of bar to jam the ring gear to the transmission case.
There’s a more hap hazard way that I seen people use and that would be a long breaker bar & socket placed on the crank bolt and positioned in a way that engaging the starter motor will loosen the bolt. I don’t suggest this; no doubt can you imagine the things that could go wrong doing this that way?

Here’s a diagram for the timing marks.

Dan.

Response From dannyboy98

I really appreciate you taking the time to help me out. I should've never taken this job on without access to my tools and with the car sitting in a driveway. I'm definitely gonna try to lock up the flywheel. I did make one mistake though and that's in not telling you that it was a single overhead cam. If you have a picture on those timing marks that would be the icing on the cake. Once again thank you. You're being a great help to me.

Response From DanD

Sorry for taking so long to get back to you; I was out of town.
Looking through the manuals that I have and they don’t list a signal cam 1.8 in 1998?
They do list a 1.5Lt and this is the alignment marks for that engine.
Anyone elsse here have a 1.8 SOHC diagram?

Dan.

Response From Sidom Top Rated Answer

I didn't see any 1.8 sohc for that year either Dan. About the only thing I could find was a 94 1.8 sohc. So either the year is way off or this was someone's project car.

My darn data base is acting up again so I can't load it right now but if I'll try to get it going later....
