Question From Eddie Hobbs on 2000 Kia Sportage

I have a 2000 Kia Sportage 4X4 that surges and sometimes dies when stopped. I have replaced the fuel pump, throttle position sensor, spark plug wires and spark plugs, any suggestions? The transmission does not seem to shift into overdrive, could this have something to do with the surging?

Response From kaurich80

when you changed the pump did you replace the fuel filter if not you can try that

Response From Eddie Hobbs

Yes the fuel filter and sck on the pump were replaced.
Thanks, Eddie

Response From Loren Champlain Sr Top Rated Answer

Many idle quality problems can be cured by regular injector cleaning. Most shops have a Motor Vac which does an excellent (state of the art) job. The throttle body and IAC are cleaned at the same time. Generally, you'll notice an increase in performance and fuel economy once done. Of course, there are other causes, but you can 'look' at it as maintenance, which should be done at 30-40K miles.

Question From Susan Conn on '02 Kia Sportage 2.0, 2 wheel drive

I have a '02 KIA Sportage, and most of the time when you go to pull off it will bog down at times just stops and ur half way on the highway then cuts off. I start it up not giving gas and it will start moving then I give it gas and it will start to bog down again or it will just slowly take off. I was it was my TPS(THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR). Well it wasn't that. I replaced the TPS, and still does the same thing. Can any one help?

Response From Susan Conn

Can you tell me where the fuel pressure regulator is located on my kia?

Response From Hammer Time Top Rated Answer

The regulator is mounted to the fuel rail but since there is no such code, why don't you give us the exact code number.

Response From Susan Conn

PO172

Response From Hammer Time

That code simply mean an over rich mixture. The regulator is one of many possibilities. Pull the vacuum line off the regulator and see if it is wet with fuel inside. If it is, then would be your problem. If not you will need to get into a more technical diagnosis.

Response From MarineGrunt

Have you had it scanned for any codes? If not, you can go to just about any auto parts store and they will do it for free. Don't let them talk you into buying any parts right away. Write down the exact numbers, if there are any, and post them here.

Response From Susan Conn

Yes. fuel pressure reg.

Question From dummy on '02 Kia Sportage 2.0 2 wheel drive

Have '02 Kia Sportage, have replaced transmission and motor computer, replaced the crankshaft, knock, throttle position sensors, put a new fuel pump, filter and fuel pressure regulator on, and still will not run. It will crank over(motor will turn over). When I brought this car it did not have any take off power, about 2 months after I got it; it started not wanting to start up. Changed plugs and for a while it cranked up find, then it wanted to start not wanting to start, and it just got to where it went from a few tries,to bout 20 minutes to nor start at all. Some one told me that there is a brake switch/sensor and if it is bad it will keep the car from starting. Does anyone know where the brake/sensor switch is? or have any ideal on what might be wrong with it? I am a single mom and on a fixed income. I can't afford to have a mechanic to try and fix it. Thank you for your time and help.....

Response From Discretesignals Top Rated Answer

have replaced transmission and motor computer, replaced the crankshaft, knock, throttle position sensors, put a new fuel pump, filter and fuel pressure regulator on, and still will not run.

If I did that to a customer's car, I would be burned at the stake.

Response From dummy

I have already spent $1,800 at a garage telling me this is whats wrong with it, that is whats wrong with it, oh no! this is your problem and each time something was replace, did not fix the starting part. The motor has good compression, no blown head or anything like that. The only thing that has not been change are the plug wires and coil packs, but the plug wires are good... so that i guess leaves the coil packs... If that don't fix it i will shoot it the rest of the way to death......

Response From Hammer Time

You still haven't learned your lesson, huh?

I gave you the way to troubleshoot this.

Response From dummy

U don't have 2 b a smart a** do u?

Response From Hammer Time

As a matter of fact, I do.
What I don't have to do is waste a lot of time trying to help someone that doesn't want to listen and just wants a magic shortcut to solve their issue without having to test anything.

Response From Hammer Time

It costs a lot more to simply throw parts at a problem and not fix it than it does to diagnose it properly in the first place.

All "crank, no start" conditions are approached in the same way. Every engine requires certain functions to be able to run. Some of these functions rely on specific components to work and some components are part of more than one function so it is important to see the whole picture to be able to conclude anything about what may have failed. Also, these functions can ONLY be tested during the failure. Any other time and they will simply test good because the problem isn't present at the moment.
If you approach this in any other way, you are merely guessing and that only serves to replace unnecessary parts and wastes money.

Every engine requires spark, fuel and compression to run. That's what we have to look for.

These are the basics that need to be tested and will give us the info required to isolate a cause.

1) Test for spark at the plug end of the wire using a spark tester. If none found, check for power supply on the + terminal of the coil with the key on.

2) Test for injector pulse using a small bulb called a noid light. If none found, check for power supply at one side of the injector with the key on.

3) Use a fuel pressure gauge to test for correct fuel pressure, also noticing if the pressure holds when key is shut off.

4) If all of these things check good, then you would need to do a complete compression test.

Once you have determined which of these functions has dropped out,
you will know which system is having the problem.
