Question From broncobob552002 on 1999 ram 1500

i have a 1999 ram 318 the radiator has back pressure before the thermostat opens

Response From broncobob552002

thx for the reply my radiator has back pressure enough to poor out the overflow bottle (cold water) and temp guage will over heat until thermostat opens i've replaced thermostat and rad cap top hose waterpump hope you can help and thx again (oh I have new radiator too)

Response From GC Top Rated Answer

So if you start the vehicle cold, does the upper radiator hose stay cool even when the temp gauge rises above normal? Need to get a infrared thermometer and check against gauge and verify temp that tstat opens. A pressure tester would be very helpful. When does it overflow?

Response From Tom Greenleaf

System has to be known full. Air or vapor anywhere or anyhow getting in to system will blow out that bottle like a real overheat which your gauge shows as well. Probably is.

This can happen from a head gasket failure frequently the result of your original issue not the cause but doesn't matter now check whole system out and that too,

T

Response From Hammer Time

So........ what's the issue?

Response From Tom Greenleaf

No issue yet at HT said. T-stat doesn't make or allow pressure, the pressure cap does,

94 Dodge Ram Van 250

Question From romy on 94 Dodge Ram Van 250

I have a 94 Dodge Ram Van 250. Where is the starter and the thermostat located? Are there any links with diagrams you could point me to? Thanks!

Response From Tom Greenleaf

You don't need a diagram. Starter is at the end of the positive battery cable at the engine. Thermostat is at the engine end of the upper radiator hose. What are you up to with this van?

T

Response From Guest

Tom,

Thanks for your quick reply. I think my starter is going bad so I am going to try to replace it myself. When I try to start the van, it takes several attempts of turning the key before the engine will turnover. Also, sometimes I have to put the van in neutral to start it. My mechanic tells me this is the neutral safety switch. Do you know where this is located? Is it difficult to replace? In the past it would start right up when I put it in neutral, now it takes several attempts. As far as the thermostat, I think it could be sticking open? My temp gauge barely makes it above “C” and the heat is not very warm. Any suggestions? I am not a mechanic but I can usually figure things out with good instructions and diagrams. Thanks for your help!

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Of course I'm guessing but I don't think you need a starter just yet but rather the neutral safety switch. It could be at the transmission where the linkage shifts it - don't know for sure. Try looking up the part at AutoZone or another and see if it gives a location or specific instructions for that.

Running cold would almost always be a thermostat stuck open. Because it's a van getting to the thermostat's cover may be a pest. It's really just a housing, gasket and the thermostat that must point in the right direction and most are marked "towards radiator" or you would just put the side with the spring towards the engine. This van is no doubt a pig on gas so the sooner that's done the better as it's using more fuel running cold all the time. That's a straight forward job unless bolts/nuts are so corroded they could break and you don't want that nightmare.

You should be able to jumper the neutral safety switch for a test but you MUST ABSOLUTELY know the vehicle is in park or neutral to start it as it would then start in gear and could just take off on you!!!!

Get yourself a product called "PB" Power Blaster that is a great penetrating oil. For vehicle use not for household as it's too strong. Spray some on the fasteners you expect to need to remove asap and it could save a lot of trouble.

Hit back if you can't find the switch or someone here may know where it is,

T

Response From romy Top Rated Answer

Tom,

I looked for the neutral safety switch and can't find it. Is there a diagram somewhere online that shows the location? Thanks.

Dodge ram Overheating

Question From 98ramdodge on Dodge ram Overheating

I have a 1998 Dodge ram 1500 2wd with the 5.2 v8 (318) it started to overheat one day to about 240 then dropped back down to the 190 area like normal and ever since then it will overheat sometimes then go to normal and then other times it will go all the way over the 260 red mark. it has a brand new thermostat. and radiator. it doesnt leak at all. is it the water pump? Can a water pump randomly work and not work like that?

Links inserted by other forum removed

Response From 98ramdodge

the over flow tank sometimes gets low and then fills back up itself and im gonna check the accuracy of the temperature next time it says its overheating. i borrowed a laser thermometer to check the top hose when it says its overheating.

Response From Hammer Time Top Rated Answer

The rubber doesn't transmit heat well. Check it at the thermostat housing. That will be the hottest point.

You need to look at the coolant level when it's dead cold, before it is driven.
Make sure you're checking inside the radiator if it has a cap.

Response From Hammer Time

I would check the coolant level and pressure test the cooling system. It could be seeing air pockets from being low on coolant. The water pump wouldn't be intermittent but it could have damaged impellers.

Response From 98ramdodge

The coolant level is good and did a pressure test already and its good too.

Response From Hammer Time

Are you saying the coolant is never low?
Are you sure the temp gauge is accurate at all times?

If you can positively confirm both of those things and it overheats even at highway speeds, then it has to be a circulation problem. I have seen some water pump impellers worn off but mostly on Fords
