Question From candigrl63 on 2005 kia sedona overheating

hello. i'm at my wits end and out of money. my kia sedona was overheating so we replaced the thermostat and waterpump. still overheating. told it was radiator. replaced radiator . still over heating. top hose of radiator gets hot but bottom hose does not. took out thermastat. ran car. still over heats and no water flow in bottom hose. ran water thru radiator to make sure no blocks. water runs through. fans are working. any suggestions? thank you

Response From Discretesignals

Does the heater blow hot?

Response From candigrl63 Top Rated Answer

hello. yes the heater blows out hot.

Response From Discretesignals

Does this overheat while your driving, sitting at stop lights, or both? Did you reinstall the thermostat?

Response From candigrl63

yes we reinstalled the thermostat. gauge goes up at stops , goes down when driving.

Response From Discretesignals

How high does the gauge go? When it is running hot and the air conditioning isn't turned on are the cooling fans running?

Response From candigrl63

the gauge goes all the way up. the fans do turn on. one is on. then the other turns on if air conditioning is on.

Response From Discretesignals

Does the one fan that is running, when the ac isn't turned on, run and then turn off while the engine is running hot. If you put your hand behind the fan while it is running, is the air blowing out really hot?

Response From candigrl63

not sure if the fan goes off while over heating. but it does run when it is overheating. also we can let the car sit for hours but when we go to start it up the gauge goes straight up to just above the halfway mark instead of starting out low.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Late night shift. OK - if gauge is reading even middle to hot after hours of sitting you have at least a problem with the gauge and may not be overheating at all. It's critical for the car to know (and you) what is real and if not to fix that. I doubt you are overheating now with heater working and you didn't mention it barfing out coolant or I missed that now I think you need to check actual sender for engine temp which may or may not also be part of what turns on fan for cooling engine coolant not just for A/C use - some of those two fans set ups do NOT cool the coolant for engine much or well so do?

Please don't burn yourself checking by hand and feel. It would be best to read actual engine temp at thermostat housing with a touchless infrared thermometer if really thought to be running hot if other symptoms don't exist.

General for sensors for temps: One is to show/send info to the gauge you see inside and may double as info for engine things like the fans or sending info on to engine controls for fuel delivery - not sure on every exact set up. Those are at thermostat's housing one or more.

Fans are triggered by A/C request or usually a sensor on an end tank of radiators.

#1. Make sure they are all plugged in properly then testing either senders, wiring and more would be in order.

I'd choose testing with the infrared thermo first on this when known full of coolant. Test at thermostat as said, output air of heater would be about 20F lower than actual engine coolant temp +/-. Most thermostats are about 195F and some fans are NOT triggered till a bit higher than that.

BTW - Those "infrared" thermos can be bought cheap or super high end expensive. Lower than $15 buck up to $100s. Little key fob type should do for this. Sold at Radio Shack type places, Harbor Freight, Ebay and the like too.

Gotta know what is really happening when and where now,

2002 Kia Sedona Radiator

Question From rgarcia76 on 2002 Kia Sedona Radiator

2002

Sedona

I just had a radiator replaced on a 2002 Kia Sedona...it was almost 400 dollars total, I just got it done today. I drove it back home and the temperature gauge is still going up like it's gooing to overheat. The mechanic said he checked the thermostat and said it did not have to be replaced. There is coolant in the car and I can see that it is full. What else could it be? Also when I drive, it sounds like there is a fan that is constantly on underneath the hood.

Response From Hammer Time

It really depends on how hot you got it when the radiator failed. First off, he never should have ignored the thermostat. He can't possibly know if it is still accurate or not and after the overheating, it probably isn't. At this point there is a very good possibility that you now have a blow head gasket from the previous overheating. It will have to be chemically tested to find out.

Response From rgarcia76

Should I take it back and have them replace the thermostat or have him test it for a head gasket that needs to be replaced? And is my car safe to drive like this? Is it possible that it will overheat again? When it first overheated last week, it was smoking when I got home and he said that it was a good thing it was smoking still. That it's bad when it overheats and it's not smoking. That's when something is really wrong with it...

Response From Hammer Time

You certainly need to get the car checked out ASAP. After the advice you were given and the condition of the car when given back to you, I'm not sure the same people are the right ones for this. The thermostat replacement should be automatic after an overheating episode like you had. If symptoms persist, the head gasket issue needs to be looked into but it certainly shouldn't be driven this way.

Response From rgarcia76

Thanks for all your input...I really appreciate it. Just one more question though, could it be that the heater core is plugged up causing it to overheat as well? I turned on the heater and it doesn't come out with hot air...

Response From Hammer Time Top Rated Answer

No, a plugged heater core will not cause it to overheat but a leak in the cooling system elsewhere will cause the heater core to have an air pocket and produce no heat.

i have a kia optima 2.4 vin 6 my scanner tells me that air charge temp sensor and my engine temp sensor reads -38 degrees i have replaced the pcm with no effect what could be the problem

Response From Sidom

I have to agree with HT.....
There is no way you can have -38° without setting any codes or turning a light on.
If your ECT is actually reading -38°, if you could even start the car it would be running like complete crap.

Why you would set an ohm meter to 20k to check resistance values of an IAT or ECT is beyond me but doesn't really matter at this point....

Definitely gonna need the whole story on this one.............

What led you to this point? Check eng lamp on? Codes? Engine runs poorly?

Response From Old 396

Why did you replace the PCM? This is either an issue with the air temp sensor itself or an issue with the wiring circuit that feeds the sensor. What was is the DTC (error code number) that was set?

Response From dawg07126141

there was no code

Response From dawg07126141

the 2 sensors show -38 % but both r on 2 diffirent circuits

Response From Old 396 Top Rated Answer

the 2 sensors show -38 % but both r on 2 diffirent circuits Have you ruled out a thermostat that is stuck open?

Response From dawg07126141

ones a air temp sensor and even if the ther is open were in la. it woudent show -38

Response From Hammer Time

You can't read -38 with setting an open circuit code. Suspect your scan tool.

Response From Old 396

dawg07126141.,

To test the air charge temperature sensor in your Optima set your ohmmeter to the 20K scale. Connect both meter leads across the terminals of the sensor, and breathe into the tip of the sensor. If no change is notice the sensor is defective and needs to be replaced.

kia 2005 sedona ,blowing cold air, replaced thermostat still blowing cold air.today while driving temp gage went all the way up,oil light started coming on,car began knocking.checked radiator wasn't hot at all.put 2 qts. of oil in .on way home car completely stopped when tryin o crank all lights went dim, finally cranked back up

Response From Hammer Time Top Rated Answer

You added 2 quarts of oil? How low was it?
Did you check the coolant level too?
