First, I got a 1993 Ford Crown Victoria LX v8 4.6L SFI.

Next here's what happened and where I am.

I got the Crown Vic from an uncle who gave me the car. He bought it used in Feb '06 and I got it June '07. Never once did he change the oil in it. When I got it, it did a nasty clicking sound so I had the oil changed. The oil looked like Karo syrup or like Lucas Oil Stabilizer and there was less than 2 quarts. in the engine. Ok, I thought that was it, but it still clicked. Had a mech look at it and said it was the lifters. Eh.

I spent the next months trying to get it to be quiet. I tried 10w30 @ first (smoked a bunch from tail pipe), 10w40 (smoked a bit from tail pipe) & 20w50 (a puff of smoke here and there from tail pipe) in each oil change between December '07 - Sept '08. Then I tried CD2 for a month afterward. Then the fun began, there was an oil leak between trans and engine (which I just got fixed last week, funny huh) and more smoke poured out the tail pipe. (Engine cleaners do the job, but not always to your liking.)

I learned that lesson.

Then I just ended up adding 4 quarts of 20w50 in the hot months with a quart of Lucas and in the cold months I added 4 quarts of 10w40 with a quart of Lucas. Did that until December '09. Now I do 5 quarts of either respectively.

So why am I here? WHAT IN THE WORLD CAN I DO TO FIX THE TICKING SOUND!!!!!

Some mechs say, "Change the oil, it'll clear out" But how long does it take, 3-1/2 years of changing the oil isn't doing it! "Just change the lifters." Yeah! 16 lifters at 9 bucks each + labor? HA! "Just use Engine Restore, it's in a silver bottle" Um, isn't that like Lucas or the other million and one oil products out there?

By any chance it the noise seeming to come from the passenger side? I have had PCV valves rattle and sound like internal engine noises. Just a thought.

I have a 1997 VW Passat VR6 160K. Recently it started to fall out of gear into neutral at stop signs after giving it a little extra gas it would jump into gear, as if I was learning to drive a standard, with that problem still occuring 1week later it was having problems changing gears and would rev a lot in 1st gear before it started moving. A few days later while dealing with the same issues smoke started coming out of the tail pipe and hood after I stopped mostly from the right side. The smoke didn't seem to have much of a tint mostly gray/white. The car does not go into gear at all.

You need to check all fluid levels in the car..... If those are all ok, it sounds like at the minimum you have some internal transmission problems going on. With the other symptoms mentioned you may want to take it to a full service shop to get everything looked at.

2002 mercury sable, 120000 miles.

Hit a huge rock in the road, busted trans pan, drained all fluid but was stopped after the bang. Wasn't driven after. After removing old pan I saw the filter was also broken. We replaced filter, gasket, and new pan. We filled it back up with trans fluid, but still nothing. No shifting whatsoever. Thought maybe it was still low, added more and then thick white smoke came billowing from tail pipe, shut off car immediately.
Next I removed the pan to check filter was properly seated, it was, but the was little to no transmission fluid in the pan.
What could stop it from making it to pan, and what can I do about the smoke?

Check to see if you have a vacuum line going to a modulator valve. If so, pull the hose and see if there is any oil in it. That would account for the smoke but not the lack of movement so you likely have other internal damage.

Replace the modulator valve but that still doesn't explain the car not moving. You need to get it to a trans shop for diagnosis.

I don't think they have vacuum modulators on those. Line pressure is controlled by the pressure control solenoid. Anything leaking from the transmission when the engine is running. Maybe fluid is leaking onto the hot exhaust pipe or cats?

Nothing is leaking. The fluid isn't even making it to the pan, new filter is still dry.

Just checking, because it's possible that you may be filling the wrong dipstick tube. You overfill the engine with transmission fluid and it will smoke.

I think I may have done that come to think of it. If so, oil, oil filter change, and adding to proper whole fix it? No damage?

That will fix the engine if you happened to by accident put the transmission fluid into the engine. It may smoke for a while till it burns the transmission fluid off. The O2 sensors probably won't like that, so it's possible the O2 sensors could fail.

I see recommendations to do an oil flush before oil change with this issue. Would you recommend this with 6qts trans fluid, or just drain and let it burn off?

Transmission fluid won't hurt the engine internals unless you drive around with it in there. Just do an oil and filter change and you'll be fine. Engine holds 5.8 quarts 5W-20 if you have the 3.0L DOHC and 4.5 quarts 5w-20 if you have the 3.0L OHV U motor.

Transmission takes Mercon V ATF. Look in your owner's manual and it should show you where the transmission dipstick tube is.

Its coming from the tailpipe. That's what I was hoping that it was dripping. But you can hear the difference in the sound of engine running.

Please let me know if I understand this properly. It will make this "knock" if parked for more than 30 minutes, go away then not make the noise if parked overnight?


Noises are always a tough call and this is no exception. It's odd to me that stone cold as in overnight it wont make the noise so extra tricky.


Seems some range of temperature is the factor as a beginning guess and things to check and do.


I would check and likely change out oil for a synthetic (anyway) with exact proper viscosity suggested for it. Check list would also include motor mounts, exhaust parts and shields of all sorts many can be found tapping on parts of exhaust or even shaking parts with a glove or wiggle on tail pipe?
It may not be an internal engine anything at all which is why I would change out the oil. IMO if internal that would likely change the noise for better or make it worse. If old oil shows anything odd it should be noted - save some or if a clear problem noted right away with something with the oil note that and describe it.


Part of the confusion is the word "knock" being used. Most think of something very wrong with an engine but so far not conclusive with when this happens and that it goes away,

Anyway the sound comes AFTER I start the car. The series of cranking and knocking noice lasts for 1-2 sec. After that it will go away.

If i turn off the engine and restart the car immediately, the noice will go away too. Unfortunately it will come back after 30 mins.

That sounds like mild rod knock until the engine builds up oil pressure. You might try changing the oil to a different brand or add some heavy oil treatment, the molasses type stuff.

Your rod bearing probably have a lot of wear and they are rattling around until the oil pressure builds up.

Not good as we know if so and to me if just that should be much worse the longer it's been without running not as quick as has been reported or so intermittent? T

Maybe you could install an oil pressure gauge to see how fast the oil pressure comes up when you start the engine. It also could be the famous VVT knocking noise those where known for. You would need to figure out where the noise is coming. If it is VVT, it would be loudest at the timing chain cover.

That's because all the oil hasn't drained back into the crankcase yet. As I said, changing the oil and filter to a different brand oil and better filter may help.

Was fast but to me sound like a split second of oil pressure building up but can't be sure. Not conclusive to me but still suggest changing out oil as it did seem like a possible oil/oil pressure issue,

OK - Let's try to understand this. Does this noise ONLY make a peep when starter is cranking then quit? Can it continue after starter released some times then sometimes not do it at all?

Thank you for letting me share my car problem with you, hopefully someone will help solve the problem. I have a 1999 Dodge Ram 1500 full size truck with a crew cab, automatic and a 5.2 L engine. The truck had 60,000 miles on it when I purchased it three years ago and now has 75,000 miles.

The truck runs very well and has plenty of power, although it does not get very good gas mileage. The problem I have, which I discovered about six months after I bought the truck is that it uses a lot of oil. I’ve never kept real good track of how much it uses, but I would guess I go through at least a quart of oil every 1000 miles. I do not hear any unusual noises in the engine. I do not see white smoke coming out of the tail pipe, although my white truck may show a little black film around where the tail pipe ends. The oil on my dip stick is very black but has no white residue.

I told my mechanic about the problem and he said he would put some kind of a gauge on the engine and check the engines compression. He said the engine checked out ok and he doesn’t know why I would be using so much oil. I know there has to be an explanation for this and I’m hoping someone on this forum can shed some light on it. Thanks again for the help.

All I have to offer is this...
Worked at GM dealers and had similar complaints...
According to GM engineering, it is normal for a GM engine to use a quart to a quart and a half of oil in 800 -1000 miles...
I know this sounds excessive..used to be use to using a quart in the 3000 miles between changes..
But if all checks out ok,not much you can do..
Check with Chrysler/Dodge and see what they say..I'm sure they have something similar..

They(GM) would recommend doing an oil comsumption test...
We were to inspect for any leaks,etc...check pcv system operation,..etc..
Then change the engine oil and oil filter, at customers expense, then have the customer drive the vehicle and keep a check on the oil level, (we would check if they stopped in,).then when it was a quart low,document the mileage ...if within the specs as stated above...then there is no problem found ...
Now Cadillac,Northstar engines were great for consumption,leaks...some had to have whats known as a 2 stage decarbon process done ...corrected most of them,but some had to be repaired internally....

There is a metal plate on the bottom of the intake. This has a gasket on it. These gaskets blow out and allow the vacuum from the throttle body to suck oil into the intake and through the cylinders. It burns the oil, but it is so slight you can not see the smoke. Plug off the PCV and remove the hose from other valve cover. Place latex glove or balloon over the hose. If the glove or baloon swells up, gasket is blown and needs replaced. Good luck.
