Both Tail Lights out

Question From pworthen on Both Tail Lights out

Hi there!

I have a 2002 Saturn LW200, with about 113K miles on it.

The problem I'm having is that suddenly both Tail Lights are out. Both sides failed at the same time.

The brake lights are still working. The hazard lights/blinkers are also still working.

I have replaced the bulbs and checked the fuses, they're all fine. Not sure where to go from here, any help would be appreciated!

Response From Hammer Time

Are you sure it's brake lights and running lights?

Response From pworthen

No, sorry. I just checked again, and it's just the running lights.

Response From Hammer Time

Are you sure you don't mean brake lights?

Response From pworthen

Haha, yes, I'm sure about that. It's just the running lights. They're both out.

Response From Hammer Time

That really doesn't make a lot of sense and you had made a comment about the high mount brake light working. It would have made a lot more sense if it was the brake lights. I would try bulbs first. Test for power at the socket and trace it forward.

Response From pworthen Top Rated Answer

Strange, I popped the lights out and put them back in again (same bulbs), and everything worked. Not sure why - maybe something wasn't contacting properly before. At any rate, everything is working now. Thanks for your help!

2000 Saturn LS2 - won't go over 30, jumpy driving

Question From JustDrive on 2000 Saturn LS2 - won't go over 30, jumpy driving

Year of vehicle 2000
Make of vehicle (Ford/ Chevrolet) Saturn
Model of vehicle ( Taurus/ Cavalier) LS2
Engine size (2.0/ 5.7) 6 cylinder is all I know
Mileage/Kilometers 111,367 mi

I have a 2000 Saturn LS2. Lately it had been giving me a little trouble starting up and going...when I would first crank it, it would rev itself up to around 4000 RPMs while in park. I would put it in drive, and for the first 200-300 feet it would hesitate when it should have accelerated, and then it would generally start going normally.

Last Monday, I had someone change the oil, engine filters, as well as fix a few other small things (tail light out, patch a tire). Tuesday morning, I couldn't get my car to accelerate over 20-30 mph. When I try to accelerate, it kind of jumps and jerks instead of accelerating smoothly, and it never goes over 30 mph unless I'm going downhill, and going uphill it barely goes 20 mph.

Thinking it was either the transmission or the fuel line, I added transmission fuel and stop slip/leak, and added fuel line cleaner to the gasoline. No result. It's an automatic transmission, but I did try shifting gears myself (By starting in first and going to third, and I have never driven shift, so I may have simply failed at it) to see if it was a sensor gone bad.

I took it to the Saturn dealership on Wednesday, assuming them to be the best place to find out the problem. They came back telling me it was the catalytic converter, and both the rear and the front needed replacing. I ended up taking it to Midas (it was around $600 cheaper than the dealership) and got it back about half an hour ago.

No change. It may run more smoothly, and no longer splutters and dies when first cranked (though I'll know for sure when I try and start it up cold)but it still won't go over 30 mph and just kind of jerks along. When I let off the acceleration, there's a sharp jerk.

I really hope someone here can help me. I'm not sure what I'm going to do...my parents helped me out with the converters, but I can't afford anything else. Hell, if the price had been much over what we paid we were planning on just going for a new vehicle, mine is such an old hunk of junk. But now we're $1000 in and nothing's fixed.

-------------
I'm posting this in General, because even though I had thought it was the transmission, I don't really know anything about cars...and I'm just confused as hell by now.

Response From Loren Champlain Sr

Just drive; Did Midas replace both cats? What caused the demise of the cats' in the first place? Cats don't die, they are killed. Check engine (or service engine soon) light on? Any trouble codes stored? A plugged cat can, and will, cause a severe loss of power. So, I can agree with the diagnosis, but 4000 rpm when started cold? I can't see a cat doing that. There's got to be more going on here. See if you can have the computer scanned for any trouble codes. Most parts stores will do that for free. Post any codes that they give you, here. Since you had the cats replaced elsewhere, the dealer may charge you for another diagnosis. I'm afraid that you may have 'fixed' the result of the initial problem, but the initial problem may still be there.

Response From JustDrive

They did. One they replaced with a universal, and the other with a Saturn specific cat because it had to bolt to the manifold.

The interesting thing is, the major issue is still there - but the car no longer revs up to 4000 rpm when started cold, and no longer splutters and dies. (If it does so again, I'll post that here...but that at least, was fixed.)

I'll try and run it up to Autozone and see if they can spit out the codes for me - that's what the Midas man told me I would have to wait until Tuesday to get done there.

Response From Loren Champlain Sr

Justdrive; That's great. Sounds like you are on top of things. Just let us know if we can help.

Response From JustDrive

All right, codes!

BB Cylinder misfire detected - cylinder number 6

Explanation
The powertrain control module monitors the crankshaft speed and has detected a misfire condition

Probable Cause

Ignition system fault - spark plugs, ignition wires, coil

Vacuum Leak

Injector Fault

High or Low Fuel pressure
----------------------------
BBHO2S12 Heater Condition - heated oxygen sensor bank

Explanation

The powertrain control module monitors the oxygen sensor heater. The computer has recognized a failure in this circuit.

Probable Cause

Oxygen Sensor defective

Poor Connection at oxygen sensor

Check circuit-fuse

-------------

This is all foreign to me - I mean, from just the way things sound, bad fuel injector seems right, but I didn't even know what a catalytic converter was until yesterday, so...

How does this sound to you guys? Anything I could handle, or should I take these codes back to a mechanic? (Any idea of costs? D:) Basically, I'm most concerned about whether it's going to start racking up into the thousands, because this car just isn't worth that. The 1K I already spent is probably it's max trade in value, anywhere.

Response From Loren Champlain Sr Top Rated Answer

The P0306 is #6 cylinder misfire. Possible causes shown are correct. PO050, PO051, PO052,and PO150-PO155 are all Oxygen sensor codes for the upstream, bank two sensor. Bank two is the left side on the 3.0L engine. Both of these codes can cause catalyst damage and should have been addressed prior to replacing the cats so as not to damage the new ones. You'll need to have some diagnostics run to find out the cause of the trouble codes.

Response From rich fifer

Have your catalyic converter checked it may be clogged
