2003 Subaru WRX clutch issue

Question From Stefan81 on 2003 Subaru WRX clutch issue

2003 Subaru WRX 2.0 Turbo, 120,000 miles. Car is completely stock, had clutch and transmission rebuilt 2yrs/25,000 miles ago. Rebuilt clutch regularly fought w/ me in 1st gear on takeoff. Was driving and when shifting from 1st to 2nd the clutch went straight to the floor. No popping, no grinding, no noise or vibration whatsoever. Clutch now will stay in original starting position or all the way to the floor, stays in those two positions firmly but no tension in between, can't put into gear. Any ideas where to start? Been told it could be the clutch, the master cylinder, or even a tension cable? Also, what all will i need to remove just to try to diagnose the problem if i can fix it myself? Thanks for your time and effort

Response From Discretesignals

Have you checked the fluid level in the clutch master cylinder?

Response From Stefan81

Have not, will do, thanks

Response From Stefan81

Checked fluid level. Clutch reservoir was low but not empty. Added fluid and bled the system, problem still exactly the same

Response From nickwarner

Is there an access cover you can look through to watch the slave cylinder pushrod move as the clutch pedal is pushed? It sounds like either the master cylinder is junk or the throwout bearing is.

Response From Stefan81 Top Rated Answer

That's funny because I went ahead and put on a new slave cylinder on someone's advice and the problem still exists. I think the old slave cylinder was actually working fine. Going to check the master cylinder next, is there an easy way to determine if the master cylinder is the culprit?

Response From Hammer Time

That's going to be real hard to determine now that you have opened the system and filled it full of air. You need to get an accurate diagnosis before throwing parts at it.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

I'd probably just plug it where line goes in and then it should be a solid pedal if not air,

MORE POWER?????

Question From Young Blood on MORE POWER?????

I have a 95' Honda Civic EX with 1.6 Vtec motor. What are some inexpensive ways to get more power for civic?

Response From ABoismenu

I'm not really sure how technical you are or what kind of tools you have avaliable but while i was in school an instructor played with cam degreeing and gained a few extra HP. Play around with it see what happens.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Just put it on a trailer and tow it with one of these and still be the fastest in town!

T

Response From GlennAB1

How much $ do you want to spend?

You can increase the power of any engine, however, as power increases reliability decreases.

Manufacturers are darn good at producing engines with high horse power per cubic inch while maintaining reliability.

An exhaust header is a good way to get a little horse power.

How about nitrous oxide. It will make your little Honda scream..... till the engine comes apart.

Can someone enlighten me as to why anyone cares about a grocery getter having power when this was done, finito, in the 60s with cars that could eat this for lunch and spit it out as scrap without so much as a misfire!

T

Response From GlennAB1

Maybe some people want to go fast AND still get good gas mileage.

Response From Tom Greenleaf Top Rated Answer

No argument - I'm an old phart! When we wanted earth shattering power it did cost some fuel. Had some cars that had over 400 more HP than that could even have and do 9 sec 1/4 miles and ZERO to 60 in 4.something seconds! It a freaking Civic - not a dragster.

High end performance is available with a Subaru WRX something. Civics were never intended for performance and can't handle it anyway so it's a waste, IMO,

T

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Possible minimal power increase with a K&W air intake filter system but it's not a car make for power to start with,

How would I go about fixing this??

Question From SubaruSti on How would I go about fixing this??

Hello, I have a 2005 Subaru wrx Sti. I was attempting to remove the bolt from the rear sway bar mount and end up snapping off the bolt. I sprayed the bolt down with penetrating oil a day ahead of time and today, but it still snapped. I then had the bright idea of trying to use a bolt extractor. Well, I used it and ended up snapping the nut off thats welded inside of the frame . Not such a bright idea after all.

My question is, how the heck am i going to fix this?? Does the frame need to be cut out in some way? Is there any way to fix this without effecting the integrity of the frame? I know I'm a new guy here, but any help or advice would be greatly appreciated before I try to contact a mechanic. Thanks.

Response From juncker

You can try to use a bolt extractor. You can buy one from the ace or any hardware shops.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

junker - he tried that with no luck. This thread is old now for what it's about and was answered and please leave those alone. People get a notice of a reply made and are long done with an issue or not paying any attention anymore if not responded to pretty quickly it's a dead thread. Closed now to prevent this....

T

Response From Hammer Time

For future knowledge, putting penetrating oil on the head of the bolt doesn't do a thing for the rusted threads on the other side. If you can't get it on the threads, it's not going to do anything. You've got a hell of a problem and i don't suggest you attempting anything else yourself. A good shop should be able to cut an access hole in a safe place and get another nut behind there but you need to make sure you find a competent shop, not your neighborhood tire store.

Response From SubaruSti

Thanks for the reply. Your response is exactly what I expected . I autocross this vehicle once a month, would cutting into the frame and patching it be structurally sound for what I'm doing?

Response From Hammer Time

If it was done properly and then reinforced it would be OK.

Response From SubaruSti Top Rated Answer

Ok, thanks for taking some of my worries away.
