Question From Guest on 2000 hyundai elantra brakes and struts

My 00 Hyundai has 160k miles with original brakes struts and springs. the time has come to change them. I want to change the rotors and drums also. Some0ne told me the rotors are pressed on and it has to be done by a dealer or auto shop. Is this true or can I change them like in the old days? Also the rear sway bar link attached to the strut I am unable to get the nut off any tips?

Response From Loren Champlain Sr Top Rated Answer

My repair guide is asking 'inboard' or 'outboard', seperable or not hubs? I've never run into "inboard" rotors on a Hyundai. If they are the outboard, seperable type, it could be a DIY'er job. Otherwise, get out the checkbook. Wish I could be more help.

if i replace struts, must i replace mounts too?

Question From vilekyle on if i replace struts, must i replace mounts too?

Hi. My gf's mom has a 2000 Hyundai Accent GL, 4cyl, 120k miles, that bounces terribly as she drives down the road. The folks at Big O told her that she needed new struts, and since they have never been replaced, sounds like the right place to start. If I replace the struts, do the mounts HAVE to be replaced at the same time? The mounts seem to cost nearly as much as the struts themselves. Thanks for your time and input:) -Harley

Response From nickwarner

If it was making a rattle noise before, then yes. But I always advise my customers to do the mounts. They are factory parts which are of lesser quality than replacement especially on a hyundai. Also, they have 120k on them already. They have to be removed to replace the strut. Replace them now or 20k down the road you will pay the same amount of labor because they will be shot and throwing off your alignment. The cost of the tires you will wreck alone makes this worthwhile. I know they cost almost as much as the strut but do it for the sake of the car. I've seen a lot of customers waste a grand trying to save a hundred and in the end if they would've paid the money to do it right they would've not only saved money in the long run but been much happier with the car. Put new mounts in. It will be much better in the long run.

Response From vilekyle

Makes sense. And youre absolutely right about not saving any money doing a half-assed job. Is it possible to compress the springs using a chain type pair of visegrips or a large c-clamp or is the spring compressor tool absolutely necessary? I am fairly mechanically inclined and planned to do the work for her myself to save her the labor expense. Thanks for the advice, it is much appreciated! -Harley

Response From DanD

Call me a wussy but I wouldn’t use anything other then a proper spring compressor.
If you have ever seen the force of a loaded spring shooting across a garage; taking out everything in its path, you’d understand why.
I know the style of grips you’re talking about and if you could even get them attached safely; they wouldn’t compress the spring enough to take the load off of the mount.
Many people have been killed or severely injured working on springs; do this with as much caution as you can.
Yes this is just a light Hyundai Accent; but the spring will still have enough kinetic energy to bust your arm, without thinking twice.
There must be rental places; that could help you out; here’s one style that looks fairly functional?

Dan.

Response From vilekyle

Point well taken. Ill see abt renting one. Thank you.

Response From nickwarner Top Rated Answer

Dan hit this one on the head. These springs can and will kill or maim. Just view them when under tension as a loaded gun pointed at you. Your local auto parts store will probably loan you one with a small deposit. I've never seen a substitute for the proper tool that would be adequate. Since you already have some mechanical ability this should be a fairly easy fix for you to do. Let us know if you run into any snags.

Question From Nell on 96 Hyundai CV Joint Replacement

G'day Everyone,

First time here. I'm going to have to replace both Right & Left CV Joints on 1996 Hyundai Excel. My Partner has a friend who says he can do it, hmm. Can you please help me with the basics that have to be done & roughly how much it would cost DIY compared to replacing the front axle or am I on the wrong track with replacing axle.

Thanks

Nell

Response From Sidom

Depending on the cost of the reman axles, that would probably be the best way to go. Here the price has come down so much that the price is close either way you do it and changing an axle is less work plus you get 2 new boots & grease.

Changing the boots only is labor intensive and while not real hard there are a few tricks to doing it, so if the prices is good, go with the axles...

Response From Nell

Hi Sidom,

Thanks for the information, one more thing. Does the condition of shock absorbers affect the CV Joints?

Response From Sidom Top Rated Answer

That car should have struts on the frt not shocks.

It won't affect it directly but a weak strut will allow the frt end to dip more as well as bounce more, so that is more in & out movement on the inner (plunge) joint & boot so indirectly over time I guess it could....

Question From mkwasnie on bolt on top of strut won't come off...

I have a 2001 Hyundai xg300. I took off the struts and I cannot get the bolt on top of the strut off. The shaft just turns with the bolt. I have compressed the spring, tried impact wrench, I also tried vise grips on the end of the shaft as well as tried vise grips on the strut shaft itself. Help? Any idea's?

Response From Hammer Time Top Rated Answer

I've always been able to get them loose by using bursts with a very strong impact fun. As a last resort you could cut the shaft and put it into a vise after pulling it out of the spring.

Question From Ademonc on 2004 hyundai santa fe cv replacement help.

Hey guys Im working on changing the cv axle on my santa fe. I took it apart and removed the old one then placed the new one. Now im stuck trying to assemble everything back together. I can not raise the break disk back up to screw it back on to the strut. I have tried what seems like everything. Is there anything I could be missing?
Here is a picture of where i am currently stuck.

Response From Discretesignals Top Rated Answer

You mean the strut to knuckle bolts? Make sure the axle stub slides in, so it isn't binding up and keeping you from installing the bolts.

Response From Ademonc

Awesome just figured it out but thank you the knuckle was in a bind and I couldnt get it on. All good now. Ive been at this for 6 hours now lol You mean the strut to knuckle bolts? Make sure the axle stub slides in, so it isn't binding up and keeping you from installing the bolts.

Response From Discretesignals

They can be a pain, but it looks like you got it under control. Thanks for the follow up. Thread locked as solved. Can be reopened upon request by the OP.
