Compressing Struts

Question From zmasterflex on Compressing Struts

I tried to change the struts in a friend's 1997 Chrysler Town and Country. The springs wouldn't compress with the tool I rented. The top "plate" that holds the spring down wouldn't budge, even when I compressed the main part of the spring, the top and bottom of it expanded even more causing the issue. I am curious to what the correct procedure is here. Did I rent the wrong type of tool or is this strut known to be difficult?
I need to know why to feel incopetent Thanks for any help.

I was told that the tool was standard.

Response From Guest Top Rated Answer

That tool is standard for some struts... With that style Chysler, there this isn't enough coils to grab it by the top & bottom coil.... to compress it, it needs to be grabbed by the top plate & bottom coils to compress it enough to change the struts.

If you haven't got it assembled then you may need to take it to a shop to have it reassembled. If you did get it assembled then..... Good job & I'm sure it was a PITA

2005 Chrysler Sebring Touring Park Not Engaing

Question From valo2027 on 2005 Chrysler Sebring Touring Park Not Engaing

I have a 2005 Chrysler Sebring Touring Edition 2.7 with approx. 130,000 miles automatic transmission. Everything has been running in tip top shape until today. I was changing the front struts with not much problem, however after I was done and ready to go to work I shifted into reverse and the car made a whirring sound and would not go in reverse. I then tried to put it in drive to go back up my driveway and again the same whirring with no forward motion. I then tried to put it in park to keep the car from rolling backwards and noticed abruptly that park did not engage. I tried all the gears and it makes the whirring sound in every gear except park and neutral. Within the last couple weeks I have changed all fluids, radiator, engine oil, tranny oil with no problems until today after I replaced the struts. Any ideas?

Response From Hammer Time Top Rated Answer

Sounds like you either don't have one of the axles fully engaged into the transmission or pulled one of the C/V joints apart.

2000 grand voyager fuel pump switch and other diy repairs

Question From karenafl on 2000 grand voyager fuel pump switch and other diy repairs

2000 chrysler grand voyager se 3.3 anyways the code said fuel pump switch, i would like to get pt. and do it myself i cant afford shop to do it. so how do i find the fuel pump and then the switch and do i do a preliminary thing. I have other questionns about this car too ( headliner, shocks struts and springs and then tuneup). dang car is front wheel drive with no room. oh the engine light came on and auto parts place did code test and they said fuel pump switch. it drives fine sluggish on hills.

Response From Discretesignals

Do you remember that actual code number? If so, could you post it?

Response From karenafl

p1494 leak detection pujp pressure switch

Response From Hammer Time Top Rated Answer

That has nothing at all to do with the fuel pump. The leak detection pump is part of an emission control system that tests the integrity of the fuel tank system. The pump is mounted on tyhe crossmember, under the truck.

Response From karenafl

thank you now my mechanic said i had a leak at the differential i havent had a problem with any leaking oil. so if differential would be having problem what would the symptoms be? and how would i do a diy to it?

Response From Hammer Time

Now you're getting way off track with a different problem that will be way beyond your ability as you already were with the leak detection pump problem. It's time to head to a shop.

Response From karenafl

i dont understand looks like that detection pump would be easy to fix why take it to a shop?

Response From Hammer Time

Because you don't even know if the pump itself is the problem or not until it's diagnosed properly.

Response From karenafl

and shocks struts and springs can that be done by diy?

Response From karenafl

and how do you test the detection pump?

Response From Discretesignals

You need an enhanced scan tool, so you can monitor the LDP switch while commanding the pump on. The pump is vacuum operated, so check there is vacuum on the small hose at the pump with the engine running and inspect the electrical harness and connector to the pump. More than likely the pump is the culprit, but testing would confirm it.

Response From Discretesignals

The shocks are easy to do. The struts require a spring compressor, so you can get the strut cartridge out. Suggest that if your going to tackle this yourself you pick up a service manual. The one's that they sell at the auto part stores should be sufficient enough.

If the front end is banging around going over bumps, check your sway bar links and bushings. Most the time the bushings get wallered out and the bar bangs around on the cradle.

Response From karenafl

i dont remember it right now, i would have to go get code test again. im sorry i just dont remember it.

Response From Hammer Time

We need that to be any help at all.

Response From Hammer Time

What was the exact code number?

Response From Hammer Time

Beat me to it.

Cluncking noise driver side suspention

Question From locko on Cluncking noise driver side suspention

I have a problem identifying the correct part for a Voyager. The car presents with a clunk/ knocking noise just below the driver peddles, i have accessed 2 different mechanics who have replaces the drop links and the Top Mount Strut at great expense considering the noise remains. The latest mechanic believes that it must be the Lower arm wishbone; however I’m reluctant to explore this as this again may not repair the problem.

Could anyone advise, if experienced this before?

Regards

Response From ramit98 Top Rated Answer

i have an 07 caravan doing the same thing when i stop then go it clunks dealers changed sway bar link and bushings , tie rod end all inner and outter , strut bearings , steering rack , left axle , even did a brake servise ...., its driving me nuts!! have you found the issue on your 03?

Response From locko

Nope! The mechanics’ have not got a Scooby Doo. I'll just have to wait for the clunk to get louder... Crazy!

Response From autojoe

I use a steelman wireless chassis ear for all my under car noises.works like a charm.has not failed me yet.one of the best peices of equipment that I have. You put clips on different areas components and can switch channels to isolate noise and pinpoint location.

Response From Sidom

I would suggest unbolting the links to the struts and drive the van for a short distance. If the noise is gone more than likely you have bad sway bar frame bushing (even if they look good) than need to be replaced and then the links reattached...

Question From mevimanbl on warning lights

I drive a 2000 Chrysler Concorde with a 3.2 liter engine. it has 114000 miles on it. I recently hit a median and i had to replace the whole front end. Everything from rebending the frame to the struts and tie rods and wheel bearings. After about a week of driving my car, the airbag, ABS light, and the traction control light is always on. My horn and my cruise control doesnt work and neither does my heater. It just stays on constanly and i cant change the settings

Please help me

Response From Loren Champlain Sr Top Rated Answer

Unsure of the heater issue, but the rest could be a clockspring problem?
