steering shaft repair

Question From jerry4603 on steering shaft repair

I have a 1999 ford f150 with a steering issue. The vehicle drove fine, gave me no indication of a problem in the steering. I pulled up to a stop sign, turned the steering wheel and the front wheels would not turn with the steering wheel. After further investigation, the ujoint coupler at the steering gear was loose on the gear box shaft. There is no indication of wear, stripped splines on either the shaft or the joint, and the pinch bolt was tight. I loosened the bolt, put the joint back on the gear box shaft but i am nervous to drive it now, wondering why it would have come loose to begin with. SHould i replace the ujoing on the steering shaft, or is there something else i should be looking for?

Response From Tom Greenleaf

This is a new one to me and YES I'd be VERY alarmed at how and why this could happen!?

Hope this pic shows...........

You are saying this coupler just came off the shaft at gearbox but bolt was tight? Something is way wrong and needs investigating as of course one of the two or both are messed up. Do you know of a repair there or accident in truck's history?

T

Response From jerry4603

Thank you all for your input. Something i could have mentioned previosusly and did not is this: I purchased the truck from my next door neighbor 2 years ago, and he bought it new in 1999. It has never had any damage of any kind. In fact any work over the years that it has needed, brakes, oil changes etc, I have done on this vehicle, so other than driving it for the first 10 years it was maintained as though it was mine. What i have determined after further investigation and the only thing i can think of that makes snese is, that since the joint came off of the steering box shaft, and the pinch bolt was tight, it is my thinking, that the steering shaft was never properly put on to the steering gear box so the pinch bolt was actually located in the grove as it should have been. I'm not placing blame or anything on anyone, but the steering gear box shaft and the universal joint on the shaft and the pinch bolt are designed to prevent the joint from coming off of the gear box. And as easly as it slid off the steering box shaft, and the bolt being tight, thats the only thing that makes any sense to me. In all of my years of auto repairs and driving i have never experienced anything like this. It is definately one for the books! I have test the sterring by parking with the front wheel against the curb and turning the steering wheel aginst the curb gently, but putting some pressure on the joint, and it seems to be tight like it should be. I drove it today back and forth to work, a bit nervously i will admit, but it functioned and handled just fine. Seems all is well. Well except that the airbag light is now on in the instrument cluster and the cruise does not work. My guess from what i have read is that the wheel was turned too many rotations one direction while the shaft was disconnected and things came unplugged underneath the airbag. Pulling an airbag off of a steering wheel is something i have never tackled before but from what i have read, if i disconnect the battery and let the vehicle sit for at least 5 minutes the airbag can be remove without worry of setting it off and i can take a look at things inside the wheel. Still not sure if i will tackle that or not. Thanks again for your feedback. I am glad i found this site and will monitor it in the future. I may be able to help someone sometime.

Response From Sidom Top Rated Answer

Unfortunately it sounds like you stretched your srs cable so if that's the case it'll need to be replaced. I would pull the code and test it out to confirm it but I've seen this before with racks & gear boxes where the column wasn't secured properly...

You theory sounds on target but I would be tempted to replace the joint anyway. This is really the only link that would make sense in what happened....If your theory is right, then all is good....If DS's theory is the one that hit the bullseye then there could be a problem down the road..

From what you've posted it really doesn't sound like you trust the truck 100% yet.....Replacing that joint at a minimum would give you peace of mind to not worry about it anymore and if the joints are cheap enough buy an extra one and throw it in the back and then you can totally forget about this and get back to normal

Response From Discretesignals

I've seen this happen on vehicles with pinch bolts that hold a knuckle to a ball joint shaft. This might be related to your situation.

Someone at one time may have done repair to the steering system and had to disconnect the gearbox. If you over tighten the pinch bolt, it will stretch and distort the coupler end causing it to be loose. It is important on a pinch design fixture that you tighten the fastener to manufacture's specs.

If the pinch is over torqued causing distortion, then you should replace the coupler for safety sake and tighten the bolt only to 30-40 ft/lbs. You may think that 30-40 ft/lbs isn't much, but its the coupler's pinching action that keeps it tight.

Major misconception and I have seen a lot of people over tightening pinches.

1989 chevy p/u 1500 power steering issues

Question From mecro on 1989 chevy p/u 1500 power steering issues

First of all i would like to say welcome and look forward to being a part of this forum. Now the question. I have a chevy 1989 1500 p/u manual transmission with a 350 engine and there is about 244,000 km on the speedo but the engine and transfer case have been replaced. today i was stuck trying to get up a hill in reverse and all of a sudden lost my power steering. I inspected all the hoses and they were fine and then got someone to turn the steering wheel to make sure that the linkage was not being obstructed , which it was not. Now does this mean my pump is gone or my steering gear? Is there a way to troubleshoot which it may be or could there be something different.

thank you
Mecro

Response From Loren Champlain Sr

Mecro; I assume that you've also checked the P/S belt? Assuming it is okay; The most common cause would be the P/S pump, itself. The more uncommon problem would be the spool valve in the steering gear. An easy, but messy, trick is to loosen the pressure line on the pump, have someone turn the wheel, and you should have a nice mess to clean up. If it just dribbles out, then it's the pump. I'd suggest doing this when the engine is cold because you don't want fluid getting onto a hot exhaust manifold. The proper way of testing would be with pressure guage, and that's what I'd recommend that you do.

Response From mecro

Great! thank you for the info. I did check the belt and it is fine also I assume that the psi hose is the on with the flare and the return is the crimped on one. Is it a very hard job to replacr p/s pump? It says in my manual that i need a special puller. Do i hook the gauge up to the psi side of the pump and do you have an idea of what my psi rate should be? Sorry one more, if by chance i get lots of fluid coming out when i turn the wheel is it a tough job replacing the steering gear?

Response From Loren Champlain Sr Top Rated Answer

You are correct. The pressure line is the one with fittings, the return with clamps.
No, not a terrible job to replace the pump, but you will need a pulley puller. They are a bit spendy. The installer is very cheap, and a cheaper version usually comes with the rebuilt pump.
Yes, you would connect the guage between the pump and the gear on the pressure line.
I'm not certain what the correct pressure should be, but I'm sure it is over 200psi. So, you'll know it if it has pressure. The steering gear isn't all that difficult, either, but there again, requires a special tool (pittman arm puller). I'd be real surprised if it turns out to be the gear. Not a common GM problem. Ford, yes; But GM, no.

Response From mecro

thank you, very much for the information, i did the wheel test and no fluid really came out. I just ordered a new pump and you were right it comes with a crappy part to assist in the removal and installation. i have one mor question. My 4x4 does not work, when you put it in 4 high there is noo light first of all that appears on the shift lever console. I have checked fuses and checked the shift lever to make sure that it is moving to the transfer case. any help again would be great.

2011 Ford Edge Sport Steering pull

Showing 5 out of 5 Posts
Question From mcali6301 on 2011 Ford Edge Sport Steering pull

Hello, this car is a 300hp FWD.

I can feel the car pull the right whenever I accelerate at ALL speeds, just not from a full stop. When I accelerate, the car pulls/shifts to the right and so does the steering wheel. The car stays traveling forward however. When I change lanes, the car may wobble based on throttle position because the original issue that I explained. I can feel the front of the car shift to the right slightly every time I give it moderate gas.

This car was a the dealership service dept. for 2 months. A Field service engineer worked on it and even he could not figure it out.

They checked all of the basics and replaced the below parts. They also took apart the differential and reported no issues. They also inspected the subframe and removed it.

*TSB 10-24-8
*Steering gear / steering rack and pinion
*Power steering pump
*Both halfshaft axles
*Transmission torque mount
*Passenger side engine mount
*Both front struts (strut mounts do not look like they were replaced)

When I bought the car, it had a front passenger side strut that was busted. The passenger side motor mount also had to be replaced to fix a noise/vibration issue, so I'm thinking the previous owner went over a big pothole or something before trading it in...

At this point, Ford is making the determination whether the car is eligible for buyback/replacement but really, I like the car rather fix it than have Ford try and match what I already have.

The shop foreman told me that he has never had a car he couldn't fix in his 24 years on the job...

So now I'm just posting on all the forums I can to see if someone somewhere has any other ideas. At this point the Ford dealerships will not look at the car since they all use the same field service engineer anyway.

DRIFT/PULL TO THE RIGHT

FORD:
2011 Edge

LINCOLN:
2011 MKX

ISSUE
Some 2011 Edge and MKX vehicles may exhibit a drift/pull right concern even though the tire pressures and wheel alignment settings are within specifications.

ACTION
Follow the Service Procedure.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Partially raise vehicle.

2. Spin all wheels and inspect for brake drag.

a. If brake drag is present, do not continue with this article. Refer to Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 206-05, for normal diagnostics.

b. If no brake drag is present, proceed to Step 3.

3. Swap front tires and wheels from side to side (LF to RF) and retest for a drift/pull to the right.

a. If the concern is resolved, return vehicle to customer.

b. If the concern is still present, proceed to Step 4.

4. Record wheel alignment settings to establish a baseline.

5. Remove the RH splash shield. Refer to WSM, Section 501-02.

6. Remove three (3) pushpin fasteners, seven (7) screws and the front splash shield.

7. Using a wax pencil, mark the position of the front subframe to the underbody at each of the mounting nut locations.

8. Remove the subframe mounting nuts, one at a time, and replace with new nuts leaving 2 threads exposed to allow for subframe movement.

a. Negative cross caster and positive cross camber will reduce vehicle drift right. Increasing negative cross caster is preferred over positive cross camber.

9. Increase negative cross caster to achieve a minimum of -0.5 degrees, not to exceed -1.2 degrees cross caster. Increase positive cross camber to achieve a minimum of +0.6 degrees, not to exceed +1.2 degrees cross camber. Right hand camber not to exceed -1.2 degrees.

a. To increase negative cross caster, rotate the subframe clockwise, as viewed from the bottom of the car, taking note of the left front subframe bushing and the right rear subframe bushing. For every 1 mm (1/32") of lateral movement outboard of both the left front and right rear subframe bushings, cross caster will increase by approximately 0.25 degrees.

b. To increase positive cross camber, slide the subframe to the right (passenger side). For every 1 mm (1/32") of lateral movement, cross camber will increase approximately 0.15 degrees.

10. Torque subframe mounting nuts to 133 N.m (98 lb-ft).

11. Reset front toe to specifications. Refer to WSM, Section 204-00.

Response From mcali6301

I should have mentioned this also. That TSB is one of the first things performed.

Rack & Pinion-how bad is this problem & can I fix it?

Showing 2 out of 14 Posts | Show 12 Hidden Posts
Question From audioresearch on Rack & Pinion-how bad is this problem & can I fix it?

The car is a 1983 Mercury LN7. It is essentially the same as a Ford EXP which is better known.

It has a manual (not power steering) rack & pinion steering system. On the passenger side end, the rack has a lot of play in it, it will move up and down inside its outer tube until it hits the top or bottom of the outer tube.

Two mechanics acted like this problem was the end of the world. Just how serious is it really? I think the car has been driven with this problem for almost a year and until a mechanic found it while checking the car for other problems, we did not even know of the problem because when driving the car, the steering seemed to work fine.

If you guys think it really is serious, I am interested in any advice on how I can fix the this unit. I want to avoid replacing it, so please do not advise me to replace it. I have not yet
found any decent cut-away diagrams or photos of a typical unit, so I don't know what is inside it except for the joints at either end of the rack for the tie rods and the pinion/rack gears that mesh. In particular, I have no idea what bushing/bearings/whatever are supposed to be there to hold the rack from flopping around like mine is.

I hope the problem is just a bad bushing and that I can just replace it.

Please advise me on how to try to diagnose the specific cause of the loose rack and how to fix the rack.

Thanks very much.

Response From audioresearch

I looked through the Ford Master Parts Catalog that covers the car and found that there is one bushing used on the passenger side end of the outer tube of the rack/pinion unit. I found one for sale on ebay and am buying it. It is nothing more than a plastic ring that snaps into some slots on the end of the rack/pinion outer tube.

Even with the bushing missing on my unit right now, the inner rack shaft (the one that has a flat section with teeth cut into it) can only move around a little bit until it hits against the inside of the outer tube. It probably actually can't even move as much as a half inch off its correct centered position in any direction. I don't consider that to be dangerous at all, not even close, and it is typical over-reaction from mechanics trying to scare customers into parting with money they really don't have to part with. I'm going to replace the missing part because I think it might affect the alignment of the front wheels, not because I think it is anything that could ever be dangerous.

Not in a million years would I ever pay $100 or more for someone to rebuild the rack/pinion unit when all they have to do is spend less than 10 minutes to install a $12 plastic part.

OK, it's pretty obvious that you think we are all just a bunch of incompetent fools that are just out to rip you off so you should find your help elsewhere.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Yup - we're all just rip-off artists. Can fix anything for free or $12 bucks and charge anything we want. You'll find out when it doesn't work or last for a week,

Just another moron. After all, what can go wrong when a steering gear gets wasted?

It's not like it could jam or break off a tie rod or anything like that.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Perhaps this can use a new wiring harness! We can suggest someone with enough time on their hands to do that

End This

Response From Hammer Time

I don't think it's serious. The only thing that will happen is you could lose your steering. You don't need that, right

You need a new rack and pinion and probably a couple of tie rod ends, then a wheel alignment.

Response From audioresearch

Thanks for your reply but I'm looking for info on what is inside the rack/pinion that is supposed to stop the rack from having the play that mine has.

Response From Hammer Time

The rack is not serviceable. there are no parts available, They sell remanufactured units.

Response From audioresearch

If someone else can rebuild/remanufacture these, then so can I if I really want to. I have a friend with a machine shop and can make any metal part that is inside these units.

The only question is do I really want to do this myself and that is why I'm trying to find out what internal parts there are that failed so I can scope out what will be involved in fixing or remaking the bad part(s).

I have no use for remanufacturers who sell junk that breaks and believe me if I find an opening, I will make parts available myself and will do everything in my power to put those 3rd-rate junk companies using junk foreign labor smack out of business.

If you or anyone else here can give me any tips about what's inside these units, please do. In the meanwhile, I'm going to take the original rack/pinion unit apart if I can and find out for myself.

Response From Hammer Time

OK, good luck with that.

Response From audioresearch

If I get anywhere pulling the unit apart, I'll post my findings.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

1983! Is that correct? You'll lose a friend in the machine shop trade over this most likely.

Can't believe and not hunting but don't know this car by name at all. Doesn't matter the unit should be sold already done to put on and should go that way only. When it works you give back the old one to be "rebuilt" again if there's any demand for them at all anymore.

The dinky little parts of rebuilding things are not sold easily to non rebuilders at all - forget it. Making your own parts, seals, bearings, bushings with known materials that can tolerate the forces upon it is a whole different world of the repair thing at all.

Yes - you see people make custom cars and things from scraps that make fun shows - even I like that stuff. Some are so targeted for custom work they really can do this stuff part to copy or not.

Find the right part already rebuilt. Machine work or not you will be lost to so much as seal it from water and be wrecked in no time. Just find the parts,

Response From Discretesignals

Why don't you take it apart to see what is worn out inside and to see if it something you can fix? There is service information available and parts to rebuild it. For $100 plus shipping you can get a rebuilt unit that is going to use the same parts you would use to rebuild it yourself.
