Steering Gear Box

Question From smcvey on Steering Gear Box

HELP! Don't ask me how (but I do have a 17 year old son) but I need a new steering gear box on my 2000 Dodge Ram 1500 Pickup. I have a friend that would be willing to tackle the job but he isn't sure whether the frame needs to be lifted for this. Anyone know the answer...I can't afford the $500 the shop wants to charge for it. My husband just lost his job and we have very little coming in. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Response From re-tired

Here ya go . We're dying to know how he managed to destroy one.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

Ram

  1. Place the wheels in the straight-ahead position.
  2. Disconnect the fluid hoses from the steering gear and cap the lines.
  3. Remove the coupler pinch bolt and slide the shaft off the gear.
  4. Matchmark the pitman shaft and arm and remove the arm.
  5. Remove the steering gear fasteners and remove the gear.
  6. Installation is the reverse of removal.

NOTE The use of new mounting hardware is recommended. Alternately, use a medium strength thread-locking compound on the mounting hardware.
  1. Be sure to tighten all hardware to the proper specification.
  2. After adding fluid, carry out the power steering pump "Initial Operation" procedure.

Response From smcvey Top Rated Answer

He's not talking BUT the guy at the shop where I have it showed me where there was something that was bent and rammed into the gear box and when they pulled that out it left a hole. The mechanic said he must have hit something low that bent, whatever it was, and rammed it into the gear box. And I quote, "Mom, I didn't hit anything. I have no idea how that could have happened." WHATEVER! Like I wasn't 17 once. I cracked an oil pan and claimed I had no idea how. Running over a barricade will do that you know. Thanks for your help. I think my friend will be able to do it

01 Durango Power Steering issues

Question From Uwm51b on 01 Durango Power Steering issues

2001 Dodge Durango with a 4.7 engine, 4wd.

I was experiencing a clickiing noise when turning right and
now my steering is very tight or stiff at low speed, like manuvering
in parking lots or at home.
At crusing speeds it seems to be better, but I am guesing that is because the
vehicle is moving faster giving a false impression.

I just replaced the P/S speed sensor and that did not correct the problem.

Is this a faulty pump? or could this be a different issue.
Fluid is at normal levels when checked as well

Also, I have looked around for a replacement pump and the O/E part that dodge gives
does not specify a shaft size (17 or 18mm).
every part store or shop is asking or quoting different prices based on the shaft size.

Dodge only sells new and at twice the price plus of a remanufactured pump,
but I cant very well buy two pumps. How do I determine what size the shaft is, or can I??

ALSO, if is safe to drive if the pump is faulty until replacement or should it be parked??

Thanks in advance...

Shawn

Response From Hammer Time

The best way is to simply measure it. Brake rotor calipers would work well for doing that.

Make sure you flush out that P/S system thoroughly before running a new pump on there

Response From Uwm51b

Thanks for the info.

Is it safe to assume (even though I know I shouldn't) that the root problem
is in fact the power steering pump that is faulty and needs to be replaced or
could there be another problem that I am missing?

There is about 111,000 miles on the vehicle currently.

Response From Hammer Time

Yes, it most likely is the pump. There are many other things that can act that way.

Response From Loren Champlain Sr Top Rated Answer

Uwm; Does the steering get easier as the engine warms? No, you shouldn't 'assume' anything. Granted, the pump is the most likely culprit, but could be the steering gear. Since you will need to flush the system regardless, you may want to have this done, first. You could get lucky. A pressure check is the only way I know to properly diagnose.

Response From Uwm51b

No, It reacted the same after i drove it home as it did when I left work.

I think I will go that route and have a shop flush the entire system and pressure check it
for me. If it is then the pump that is bad I will replace that myself. I would much rather
have someone flush the system for me than risk getting that wrong.

I can always replace the pump myself after the other stuff has been done if that
does end up as the culprit.

Thanks

Dodge Durango power steering whines

Question From Guest on Dodge Durango power steering whines

The power steering pump on my 2001 Dodge Durango continues to whine even after I had it replaced. The garage put 2 different pumps on and it still has the same problem. Any ideas?

Response From DanD Top Rated Answer

The first thing I would do, is to check that the steering linkage & suspension (ie: ball joints & tie rods) are not seized or binding. With both front wheels off the ground, you should be able to turn the wheels (left & right) at the wheels; full travel from lock to lock with a small amount of effort.
If there were a seized ball joint, the pump would constantly have to produce full pressure to move the steering, causing the pump too fail.
Next thing would be to test pump pressures; idling without touching the steering wheel the pressure should be a minimum of 50 psi but if the pressure is above 125psi; check for a restriction in the lines.
If no restrictions are found; the spool valve in the steering gear maybe defective, that would mean replacing or rebuilding the gear.
Last thing I can think of is to make sure that the replacement pump(s) are the proper one. Looking at the specs and part numbers, there are at least three different pumps. Depending on engine size, 2 or 4 wheel drive and pump shaft diameter 17 or 18mm. If by chance the replacement pump was meant for the smaller engine, 2 wheel drive and the truck has the larger V8 and 4X4 that pump is working at its max all the time. I believe the different pumps are all close enough that they would inter change. Some after market rebuilders lump all the pumps into one basket and at times their quality control may leave a bit to be desired. Get a dealer reman and have them order it using the serial number of the truck.

Steering Box Needs Replacement? - Dodge B250 Campervan

Showing 2 out of 10 Posts | Show 8 Hidden Posts
Question From homersupervan on Steering Box Needs Replacement? - Dodge B250 Campervan

Hi - I recently purchased a: 1986 Dodge Ram B250 campervan conversion, with a 318 V8. The van has (supposedly - 5 digit odometer!) 109,000kms on it (though may be 209,000...). It was previously owned by a mechanic, and is generally in great shape.

I recently took the van into a mechanic - it developed a vibration when accelerating, and there was a coolant leak from the water pump.

They recommended replacing the water pump (it's completely shot) and replacing the U joints to solve the vibration. These were expected.

They also said, however, that the steering gearbox needed replacing. The steering is loose, there is some play there, which I knew but hasn't been an issue for me. They said that 'there is a LOT of play' in the steering box, and that it needs replacing too. However, this is an expensive proposition.

So, I wanted to know what the consequences are to not having the steering box replaced. Yeah, the steering is loose, but not so much that I thought it was a problem. I've driven the van on windy highways, snakelike mountain roads, slick wet roads, and the steering worked (just takes a bit more rotation of the steering wheel).

Does anyone have any advice? Do I really need the steering box replaced, and what are the safety ramifications of leaving it be? It is a camper van - I didn't buy it expecting sports car handling. There's no wobble and the steering hasn't appeared to slip at all.

Also, the mechanic quoted $1500 canadian to replace all three parts (water pump, U joints, steering box). The steering box work represents about half of this estimate. I'm on a tight budget so don't want to do anything unnecessary - but I also don't want my steering to fail sending me hurtling into oncoming traffic.

Any advice is very appreciated!

Thanks,
Blair

Response From Hammer Time

So, I wanted to know what the consequences are to not having the steering box replaced.

Do you really need to ask that question?

Response From Tom Greenleaf Top Rated Answer

Tough call. Mopar steering gear boxes designed in the 1960's did get used a lot long after in the RVs and trucks. About now would take some old phart to decide if you have what was normal wear or a bad steering gear box. Just also know that the feeling of freeplay is highly likely to less caster designed into some HD applications.

If that gearbox has a lock down nut and an Allen head stud with nothing else wrong about it but some extra play it probably can be adjusted. Note, that Allen stud is reverse threaded to reduce lash of some expected wear within limits. Done when you are sure it is limited to the box itself only, wheels hoisted turning parts by hand watching incoming shaft and Pitman arm along with general feel, noise or clicking in box, engine off. If you over tighten it, it will probably not recover and behave to where it was before it was touched. This if attempted at all remains AYOR with knowledge now about gone on setting them. You stop short of perfect by feel then tighten the hold down nut or you are screwed. That's the best reason nobody is going to want to touch it but rather just toss it. A reman would probably come with a drop of evidence paint and void anything about it if broken,

T

Response From Hammer Time

You should not attempt to adjust the wear out of a worn steering box. It wears a flat spot in the worm in the straight ahead position and will bind up if you try to adjust that play out. The adjustment was put there for factory setup and should not be touched after that.
Replace the steering box before someone gets killed from it breaking and locking up.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

The situation needs to be assessed as normal or not which remains unknown. Already said that doing it wrong if it is fit to is done by exacting methods. Same crap they would do it it was a core being rebuilt and some can't be. Knowing the difference is harder to ascertain.

If tolerable and not causing issues now it should be safe to leave it alone. Will be critical to know that actual allowable "stack up" of any free play it might not even have right there. Too much not known for certain to mess with it first. Everything else known correct before even blaming the damn thing,

T

Response From homersupervan

Thanks for the comments. And Hammer Time, I was asking whether or not the current play in the steering box just results in loose steering (which I'm ok with), or if it indicates wear that will result in the loss of steering or lockup. I'm not a mechanic, and this is my first older vehicle, so I'm sorry if you think my question was stupid, but I'm on a tight budget so want to make sure any repairs are absolutely necessary. The van was previously owned by a mechanic, and since I've bought it (and put a couple thousand kms on it), the steering has been a bit loose (meaning steering wheel play before the tires turn), but I wasn't sure if this might have been something the old owner adjusted himself, or if in fact it is worn out and represents a safety issue. The steering doesn't appear to have gotten any looser since I bought it. I have no desire to drive an unsafe vehicle - but also don't have the budget to replace everything that may be an issue. But I'm getting the sense that y'all think it should probably be replaced.

I was quoted about $700 to replace the steering box. Do you think I can negotiate that, or buy a remanufactured gearbox myself and ask the mechanic to install it? Btw - $700 is about 1/5 of what I paid for the van, so, it's a bit of a big ticket repair at that price.

Response From Hammer Time

You have been told that you have a severely worn steering box. I'm not there to determine just how severe so we have to take the technician's opinion. I can't rule out total failure or lockup up and I would be derelict to propose that it's safe. You're been told your steering box is bad. Don't ask people on a forum to say it's safe.

Response From homersupervan

Hammer Time - I'm not sure what I did to offend you, but I think you are misunderstanding what it was I was asking. I think professionals (not just auto mechanics) need to remind themselves that the average person does not possess knowledge that is 'obvious' or plainly apparent to those with years of experience and training. In my profession (which is not, obviously, as an automotive mechanic), I try to do so, no matter how silly a question is or how obvious the answer is in my own mind. For the average person, it is very intimidating having a mechanic propose work that the average person can not really understand without more explanation - even though the cost of the replacements may represent a large sum of money and the decision to go forward left to the person without the knowledge. It was my impression that forums such as these were relatively safe ways to get that information from impartial experts.

I understand now that the 'play' in the steering box is a result of excessive wear, and that this poses a risk of failure. I am going to get the steering box replaced.

Not knowing the ins and outs of how steering mechanisms work, I did not know right off the bat that the 'play' in the steering box was an indication of it not being safe. I was not looking for anyone to say its safe, sight unseen. I was just trying to increase my knowledge of what was proposed, and the reason for the proposed replacement.

So, in any case, I will not be coming back to this forum again. I appreciate your comments, those that did not make me feel like a total idiot, anyways.

Response From Hammer Time

What knowledge does it require beyond plain common sense to know that if you have been told that there is a problem with your steering or your brakes, it is a safety concern and should be repaired ASAP. You shouldn't be asking someone on the Internet that hasn't examined your car if it is serious enough to repair. It's steering. that speaks for itself. If you were to have an accident tomorrow and someone was injured, it would take any good lawyer about 2 seconds to sue you from every angle possible.

If you have any doubts about the need or the price, take it to get a second opinion. The price does sound a bit on the steep side,

Response From homersupervan

This will be my last post on the matter, no need to beat a dead horse.

If you look at my original posting, you'll note that I was simply told the steering box had a lot of play and should be replaced. No mention was made by the technician looking at the van of the possibility of steering failure or lock-up. The mechanic looking at the van was brief and uninformative, and did not warn me that driving the van is dangerous without replacing the steering box. I did not know, and this is why I was seeking more information, if this was just a handling issue or a safety issue. That being said, I did take it seriously, did not drive the van back from the shop without the repairs (it's still in the shop parking lot, while I try to scrounge up enough money to make the repairs).

Note a post from another technician on another forum:

"Steering boxes can be adjusted within certain parameters to provide for more or less play. However this should not be done by those not familiar or experienced in these issues. Since your mechanic indicated there was a LOT of play in the steering box, it seems to me that this would be an indication of an excessively worn steering box - to which adjustments won't solve the problem. Having a worn steering box is a serious issue, as it can result in failure of your steering, even while driving, which would put you and others on the road at risk. Clarify with your technician or get a second opinion, but this is not just a handling issue, and the loose steering can indicate excessive wear, so I would go with your technician's recommendation to replace."

I know that suffering automotive imbeciles like me can be difficult, but let's just try to get along and not imply that I lack common sense and am out to hurt people.

At least I asked the question, instead of not following up and deciding, on an uninformed basis, to assume that the loose steering was just a handling issue.

So, thanks again, hope y'all have a great day.

Cold Starting Problem 1995 Dodge Grand Caravan 3.3 V6

Question From glennjd on Cold Starting Problem 1995 Dodge Grand Caravan 3.3 V6

About a month ago, on a very cold morning, my wife got into her minivan and it cranked away without firing. I got home about 10 min. later and tried again. I kept cranking it and it starting firing, but not starting. It fired a little more as I kept cranking and eventually started. There was a gas smell when I got to the garage before I tried starting it. I figured that one of the injectors had stuck and dripped raw gas into the combustion chamber causing it to flood. It seemed to go away after that, but this morning (outside temp at 13 degrees) the same thing happened again, only it took a bunch more cranking to get it started. Once it was running, it shut off and started just fine. Is this an injector problem? Is it the o-rings? In the past this vehicle has been a very reliable and easy starting vehicle.

Response From DanD Top Rated Answer

You don’t need to remove the intake; the easiest way to remove the back plugs is from underneath; reaching up over the steering gear to get to them.
As for the other test; were do I begin; fuel pressure, injector pulse, spark, resistance value of injector would be a start and of course checking these while the van is doing its thing of not starting. Then there are scan tests for crank, cam sensors, RPM signal and ECT (engine coolant temp) inputs too the computer and the list goes on and on.
And too think that technicians and garage owners want that much money and took them this long, just to figure out why it doesn’t start sometimes. LOL
Dan.

Response From Guest

Hey, just wanted to let everyone out there know that it was dirty plugs on the front bank and a air filter in need of replacement. A neighbor of mine, a former Chrysler mechanic came over and took a quick look. He immediately told me the same thing--tune up! Apparently on this engine if the air flow gets restricted then the computer compensates by sending a slug of gasoline at start up, if the plugs are bad, the engine floods. Anyway, I put in a set of new platnum plugs, replaced the air cleaner and it runs like a new car. Man that LHS plug at the back is a beast to get out. I'll do a tune up more often from here on out. Thanks again.

Response From Guest

Thanks for the info. I like working on my cars myself, but it's nice to have someone with experience to lean on.

Response From DanD

When was the last “tune up” as in plugs and wires done on the vehicle? If it’s been awhile that would be the place to begin. The gas smell could be from a spark plug(s) not firing causing the engine too flood. Make sure all the basics are covered first; after that then take it to the next set of tests.

Hmmm. I change the oil every 2000 miles, but I haven't done a thing with the plugs and wires in 100,000 miles. O.K., O.K., I'll do a tune up. Is there any way to get the back plugs out on this engine without removing the intake manifold? Once this is done, what would the next set of tests be? Thanks for the info.
