2006 Buick Engine Seal repair

Showing 2 out of 2 Posts
Question From Gabriell on 2006 Buick Engine Seal repair

2006, Buick Lucerne CXS, 4.6 Liter Northstar V8, and 96,000 miles.

I believe that I am in the correct section of the forum. If I am not, please let me know where I should post this.

I have had the same/similar repair done several times at a repair facility. At 71,962 miles, they found an oil leak from the oil pan, valve cover and front crank seal. They replaced the Valve Cover Gasket, cover and seals.

At 90,085 miles, they again found an oil leak from the oil pan, valve cover, rear main seal, and power steering gear. They replaced the power steering rack and resealed the valve covers and oil pan.

At 95,381 miles, they found an oil leak from the front and read valve gasket and found both valve cover gaskets leaking, and they replaced both the left and right.

I have researched, and I have not found this to be a consistent problem with this engine/vehicle/year etc. Are the repairs being done incorrectly/negligently, is there something else that I should have done?
Thank you for your assistance.

Response From Tom Greenleaf Top Rated Answer

Gabriell:
If this is common to this exact engine, model and year there should be a TSB (Technical Service Bulletin) on this. I suggest you take the complaints you may find out on the web with a grain of salt to some degree. People just don't bother when a vehicle exceeds all expectations to brag but will for complaints.

I haven't heard of this at this site to this degree at all and or most any with repeated same issues. Unfamiliar with this as a problem because of that.

Now the questions and opinions on my part: Have you owned this from new or a good history from new? You've marked the miles to the miles when things were done.

Are you getting or doing the routine service on this as per recommendations for it? Specifically type of oil exactly and on time and miles? Most vehicles will fall into what I'll call a "severe" duty schedule which about doubles the frequency of things like oil changes suggested.

All the gaskets you mentioned are stressed when crankcase pressure which really should still be a slight vacuum are excessive IMO and experience with about any piston engine frequently plain wear and blow by.

I'll wait with you what others here have to say on this engine for these type issues with oil leaking. Rack and pinion isn't really engine so that's separate.

Couple more thoughts. Some engines do in fact have propensity to leak and frequently the gasket makers specifically Felpro has made upgraded gasket material for many. If this work was dealer done there's some pressure to use only factory parts that if known to do this and not upgraded might still be used.

If (IDK on this) engine was trying out new metals for specifically pistons and engine cylinder metals (some in history have done that) it didn't work out.

Back to repeats of these type issues: To me it means a worn engine! It is too early for any that are not abused or a poor design. I don't know exactly how mechanic error for this could be the problem unless you know you used the same mechanic/tech and something is being done incorrectly.

Bet you've spent a lot of $$ on these repairs already. I suggest for now spend a bit more for a general engine diagnostic for plain wear to see if that comes up as the cause as it smacks of just that,
