1998 passat won't start

Question From Keikei on 1998 passat won't start

I replaced the battery and starter in my 1998 Volkswagen passat. It is manual. I can push-start it and it runs great! As soon as I turn it off it is dead. There is a flickering/ticking of something but no turn over at all when I try to start it. My remote entry does not even work! Help! It has 112000 miles

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Was the original intent of the remote entry to also allow starter to crank engine? Have you checked or replaced it's battery?

Check at starter solenoid to see condition of the "trigger" wire for starter. If broken or all corroded that could explain a lot,

T

Response From Keikei

Hi Tom, I am not sure about the remote entry, I doubt it though. I did replace the battery and the starter. How do I check the solenoid? I am a girl with shitty home mechanics that are stumped with my car.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Just FYI - the solenoid is really a remote connection to the starter like a an electromagnet to make a larger amp connection for a powerful starter via a smaller wire which I'll call a "trigger" wire. Hard to know if that has adequate current and good connection sometimes.

Typical is that wire enables engine to crank and in turn gives ignition current for spark all at once. If lousy it could/would be erratic.

It's a pill but you can solder in new eyelet end if there's troubles there. Just know "snug" on some wiring doesn't mean a good connection.

Eyesight of the connections is usually enough. It could be a fault with ignition switch but not thinking that right yet.

In my experience - starter solenoids are usually NOT the problem but could be. Check connections and go from there,

Hey T! How do they check this? And where are u? Can I come to you?:) I'm in Arizona. Can you tell me exactly, or close to, what I need to do? Gracious, I am glad for this site!

Response From Tom Greenleaf

I'm about 3,000 miles away! West of Boston, MA. Know folks in Phoenix that might be able to help if needed,

T

Response From Keikei

For sure! Please refer. Also, how is the solenoid checked? Will I benefit from taking it to an auto electric shop?

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Link to an A/C bulletin board is............

http://acsource.net/acforum/index.php?sid=7acf1fcd552e644d7d8eeeb77edc058a

ACProf and Cusser both live in Phoenix. Owner, Warren Willingham of the site lives there too but would be less available on the boards for suggestions locally.

Just post what you need and who they like locally and don't worry especially now in Winter that it's a dedicated A/C site. We/They are mechanics also as you have to be for A/C too.

More suggestions may come from right here and so far as said I'd be checking out connection of that "trigger" wire for any current/voltage when starter is requested. If some it may just be too weak. If none there's another fault to find.

Guess but probably a relatively easy fix,

Question From 96vw on 96 volkswagen wont start

Question From valencia on I think I need a new starter, help!

First of all here is the info

Year of vehicle 1998
Make of vehicle Volkswagen
Model of vehicle Cabrio
Engine size I'm not sure how to figure this out
Mileage/Kilometers 90,000

Okay, I have been away for a week and I just tried to turn on my car and nothing happens. No clicky sound when I turn the ignition, it won't even turn on to just turn on the radio or wipers. I just got the battery replaced a month ago so I don't think it's that. I called my repair shop and asked their opinion, they said it was probably a starter that needed to be replaced and it would be $1,500 plus labor. I looked up the price of a starter for my car online and it's $150 at most! I don't know anything about fixing cars so I would not fix it myself. Would I be able to buy a starter online and bring it to them? I need to know for sure if that's what it is before I buy it, but I go back to school in a week so I need to get this done asap. What would be the best option for me?

Response From Jeff Norfolk

First find a new shop. At $1500 bucks they either don't want to do the work or they are taking advantage of you. If you have no radio or any other accessory than you have a power problem. Either ignition power problem, battery connections or battery. I bet the battery is dead. If you just changed it recently than you may have a power draw when the key is of. I would change or recharge the battery and find a shop that will not take advantage of you. Ask you neighbors and friends who they use. Word of mouth is the best way to find a good repair facility.

Response From valencia

Oh you're right about the battery, I just jumped it and it worked. I left it running a little while and now it can start on its own. What is a power draw, and could it happen again?

Response From Jeff Norfolk Top Rated Answer

A power draw is when something is drawing battery power even when the car is off. Something may be staying on when it shouldn't. It usually shows up for the first time when a car has not driven every day because as you know the alternator keeps the battery charged when it is running. So if you have a small draw it may not be noticeable if the car is driven every day. But as soon as you let it sit......you battery needs a defibrillator.
