Question From tlc831 on 1997 nissan maxima

I have a 97 nissan maxima that I take good care of, about a month ago it started acting up... it cut off when I was sitting in line at a fast food restaurant but it cranked right back up. a couple days after that it did the same thing. then a couple of weeks after that it cut off but wouldn't crank back up and the battery died trying to crank it I got a jump and it cranked up. After that it sounded like it didnt want to crank but it always would. now when I go to crank it it just clicks and does nothing... I had the battery starter and alternator tested and all 3 came back fine a week ago, so is it the starter that's keeping it from cranking now and if it is then why had it died when it was still running a couple of times??? it doesnt make any sense, I have my mechanic coming tomorrow but im trying to figure it out!!

Response From Hammer Time

This sounds like a starter to me. One thing you can try is have someone else hold the key in "start" while you tap on the body of the start with a small hammer, bar or pipe and see if that triggers anything. If it does, replace the starter.

Response From tlc831

could a starter cause a car to cut off while its idle with my foot on the break or anything? or could the battery cables cause the car to just cut off while it's idle?

Response From Hammer Time

Actually neither one of them will cause the car to cut off although there are other power supply connections that could do that. The can needs some testing while the problem is present.

Response From tlc831

So it was my my starter that was causing it not to start and the cam sensor was causing it not to start right and cut off when it was idle....

Response From Hammer Time

That makes sense.

Response From tlc831

yeaaa... well my cousin is a mechanic and hopefully he'll be able to come over and check it out tomorrow... I was just wondering, thank you guys so much for the info i'll let you know what the problem is when I find out!

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Clicks when cranking usually mean low amps from battery. Single click then nothing usually means a bad connection. Check or replace battery cables as the ends at the battery stink. Must be shiny and fit tight. 1997 also mean both ends of cables. Watch out as positive cable to starter could break right off if not stuck there lube it.

Just know that battery power to the vehicle can only be as good as the weakest link,

T

Response From tlc831

Thank you for the information! I tried to jump the car and it still just does the one click. so would it still not even try to start if it were the cables when its hooked up to another car? I would think it would at least try and crank! But I'm definitely not a mechanic lol...

Response From Tom Greenleaf Top Rated Answer

That smacks of battery cable connections as said. Pos cable goes to starter and neg goes to engine block. All must be good. If going for it take neg cable off battery first and back on last. You can grease the connections with dialectic grease (silicone grease or any better than nothing) and probably never have a problem again. Whatever works be it a wire brush or sand paper to shine up the connections.

These and many have lousy metal at the battery. Might require replacement??

Question From Hoorah on Nissan Maxima has starting problem

Hi, I just recently bought a 97 Nissan Maxima (3.0 V6). One of the first days of owning it, it began having problems starting. Basically, it will only start like it should some of the time (maybe 50% of the time). The other 50%, when I insert the key in the ignition and turn, all the gauges will go on as if everything is normal, but then that's it, nothing else. I turn it and it won't turn over, there's not even any clicking. It's as if I have the key half turned. So I'll continue to turn off, and turn on until it goes. It usually takes about 10 times of repeating that until it actually starts. And the previous owner has papers to show that the battery is almost new and there's a newer starter. So I'm not sure why it would be doing this. Any ideas and how much it might cost to fix?

-Ross

Response From Loren Champlain Sr Top Rated Answer

Ross; Check battery terminals for corrosion. Sometimes, they will look okay, but be nasty on the inside, so will require removing them for cleaning. Could be a faulty starter or relay. There was a TSB stating that the relay should be replaced with the starter on some models. Some of the remans. would actually come with a new relay.
Although rare, could be ignition switch.

Question From in trouble on 1996 Nissan maxima hesitant starter, runs well

hi. I have a 1996 Nissan Maxima with the original super low miles of 78k. I have had it for about 6-7 years but never registered it & it's just sitting in the garage. I start the car every now & then and let it run for a while, anyways, the problem i am describing came with the car when i bought it and 3 medicere/good mechanics havent been able to do anything.
if you want to start the car in the morning or after its been sitting there for a while, you have to crank it for about 5-10 seconds while you are pumping the gas pedal. when it starts, it runs great. if you shut of the engine and try to start it again let say within 45 minutes, it starts right up but the longer it sits the longer it takes to start it back up again. & it never gets any worse than 5-10 seconds no matter how long it sits there in the garage.
I cant remember what the mechanic shops tried or checked but it is a very unusual case I guess. Any idea? thnx

Response From speed

might want some fresh fuel in there too i wouldnt be surprised if the stuff in it is like varnish. not sayin thats ur problem just it will run better.

Response From Sidom Top Rated Answer

while you're taking the reading you want to make sure the rail pressure holds & doesn't drop rapidly......

Nice call Speed...............

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Side note to this: Car has been off road sitting in garage for 6-7 years. If the battery was new that long ago it's junk now. May have huge voltage drop when trying to start it if battery is that old throwing off a lot of diagnosing. IMO - you could test that battery all you want but if that old it just can't be giving full power anymore for starting. Just a thought,

T

Response From speed

check the fuel pressure you might have a bad pump that doesnt build enough pressure right away.
