2001 Mitsubishi Galant - Starter Sicks when hot

Showing 2 out of 2 Posts
Question From jpadillapp on 2001 Mitsubishi Galant - Starter Sicks when hot

The car starts fine in the morning but once I drive out and drive for a little and the car heats up (normal heating no over heating) and I turn the car off it will not start up. All it does is click...click...

I have popped the hood and banged the starter and sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.

I have removed the starter and had it checked and it passes all tests. I have also had the battery and electrical checked and Autozone and all good.

Response From Tom Greenleaf Top Rated Answer

Hmmm? Could still be a starter problem as if it can start cold without trouble it would test ok.

Last Mitsu and others too had what I think is pretty lousy battery cable end clamps. Make sure those are clean AND snug. If they won't snug up they either have to go or doubt you'll find what were battery shims to make terminals larger made of lead!

97 mitsubishi mirage trouble starting

Question From gary6 on 97 mitsubishi mirage trouble starting

my 97 Mitsubishi mirage v4 1.8L (130000 miles) is having trouble starting. It seems to start easier after it has been sitting for a day, but if I try to start it after it's been sitting for less then an hour it doesn't start as easily, sometimes it won't start at all . It also seems to have more trouble starting when I leave the radio on.

I replaced the old battery with a brand new one and an hour later I had the same trouble starting again.

when starting the car I will hold the key all the way in the start position, but it makes a noise like i am turning the key back and forth between on and off.

in other words, the starter will turn over once wait a second with no sound and then it will crank the starter once again, then it goes quiet once more. (the whole time i am holding the key in the start position)
also the gauges lights seem to be acting normally

the voltage coming out of the battery is at a normal level while the car is off (~12.4Volts) or on (~14.6Volts)

is it the starter, alternator, or something else? what do i do next?

Response From gary6 Top Rated Answer

I replaced the battery at first this only delayed the problem. eventually the problem came back. next I changed the starter, and its been working fine for two weeks.

the starter that was sold to me had reversed positve and ground terminals, but it was exactly the same as the factory starter. the wires were not long enough to make the switch so I had to lengthen them a few inches to fit... No BIGGI

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Battery cable connections need be known good at starter and engine block for ground. Begin with that. You just swapped the battery so hope those were checked out then,

Question From iceman on mitsubishi 3000gt no start

please help, i just threw a rod.so i went to a junkyard and bought a block and a one head (even though my car is Dohc)i i only bought one.so i put the engine together and once i was finished and tried to crank it a few times,i realized i forgot to push the torqhe converter back all the way in.so i took everything back out and re did the whole thing, the car gets gas and fire, but will not start, when turning the engine over by hand it turn very easy, almost too easy than get very tuff to turn, but does make a complete turn.when cranking there is a loud noise that comes from the stater or torqhe converter soon the starter just grinds out.i think it could be a bad head, starter or torqhe converter, but i don't know.can someone please help me.

Response From DrElectrics Top Rated Answer

The starter drive may be worn. The drive will have 13 teeth i think for mitsubishi. If they are worn, when it engages the fly wheel, it wont grip and will slip. You will hear a grinding noise when it engages.

Question From tmarie1992 on 2001 Mitsubishi Mirage won't turn over

So.... I left my lights on in my car for approximately 4 hours... obviously my car wouldn't start due to a dead battery... I got the battery re charged.. my car still won't start.. it clicks sometimes.. but doesn't turn over..... I also cleaned the battery cables off with steel wool to see if that would and help and nothing....I tried to find the starter to try tapping on it to see if it was the starter... BUT I COULDN'T EVEN FIND IT!!! What do you think??????? PLEASE HELP!!!

Just passed 230,000 miles...

Response From Hammer Time

You probably ruined the battery permanently. You need to have it tested.

Response From tmarie1992 Top Rated Answer

I had it tested when it was recharged.. The lady at auto zone said that it was holding a charge.. so do you think that after I got it recharged and hooked it back up it somehow killed it?? If so. How?

Response From Hammer Time

If you're sure the battery is good, then it has to be a connections problem.

Response From tmarie1992

Like the connection form the cables to the battery? Or something else?

Response From Discretesignals

If you have the headlamps turned on while attempting to crank the engine, do the headlamps stay bright or do they dim out? The headlamps don't run through the ignition switch on this model. If they dim out, you probably have a battery or battery connection issue.

Response From tmarie1992

Thank you both!! It was actually the freaking battery!!! $100.00 later!!!

Response From Discretesignals

Batteries can be funky sometimes during testing. I've seen conductance testers pass batteries with bad cells. Load testing and specific gravity testing (if it has removable caps) is the final authority IMO. Especially if cells are bumping around into each other or if there is a lot of stuff floating in the bottom of the battery shorting stuff out.

Glad to read you got it figured out. Closed as solved. Can be reopened upon request by the OP.

Response From Hammer Time

Yes, make sure any smaller cables/wires weren't left off in the swap.

Also make sure the engine isn't just locked up for any reason. Try cranking it by hand with a socket on the crank bolt.

Question From Leprekon on 03 mitsubishi spyder gts wont start.

The car was running fine a week ago but was parked for about a week. When i went out to start it up it wouldn't!

Starter is turning over, checked for spark and have it. Pulled a fuel line and it is getting fuel. I checked the forum and found stuff to check for what system may have the problem but I 'm not sure on how to check for compression. If I hold the key in start it almost sounds like it wants to go every couple turns but it just wont catch.

Response From Hammer Time Top Rated Answer

You need to do more accurate testing. You need to use a fuel pressure gauge to get an accurate pressure reading, use a noid light to test for injector pulse and if it passes all that, then get a compression test to test the compression.

Response From Leprekon

Thank you. I will repost as soon as I get this done.
