Grinding noise

Question From dothebadthing on Grinding noise

Hello Everyone,
Im having an intermittent fault occur on my Fiat Grande Punto when I try to start the car. It is a grinding sound similar to that of turning the key when the engine is already running.

Its had a new starter motor and no change. Happens seemingly randomly when attempting to start. Can see no pattern to when it's happening or why.
Heres a link to youtube to give you a better idea of the sound, its not the best quality video but hopefully it will give you a rough idea.

Thank you

56 fiat grande punto,
1.4 sport,
30000 miles on clock.

Hi - This vehicle not sold where most regulars are located but doesn't matter. This starter should be removed to inspect the "ring" gear or AKA "flywheel" which is the large gear the starter is turning and can be seen with starter removed if it takes mirrors. Look at that gear one full revolution of engine.

Two starters doing the same thing that is the likely problem. Requires removing transmission to get to it for repair - don't know if just a gear is available or the whole unit that holds it?

If found bad, worn, teeth missing, chipped off also look the the starter's gear so it doesn't happen again.

Another is that somehow the starter could be shimmed too far away from that gear. Couldn't guess what engines do or don't do that.

You said it sounds much like when you use the starter with the engine running. Hope you are not too familiar with that meaning if someone has that habit this problem will happen again,

'78 fiat 124 spider missing dipstick

Question From Firepudding on '78 fiat 124 spider missing dipstick

1978 Fiat 124 Sport Spider 1800 1.8l

Car was given to me by a friend, its been sitting in his shop for about 6 years. The shop is climate controlled. My friend and his dad bought it from the previous owner with a bad starter; they jump started it and drove it back to the shop where they dismantled the carb and intake side of the engine bay to install a new starter. installing the starter is as far as they went with it and it sat like that for about 6 years. I jumped in on it recently this month and rebuilt the intake side and carb. The only thing missing is the dipstick and seal. no auto parts stores seem to carry a specific dipstick for any old cars so im more curious as to how i can go about making one or figuring out the correct length to buy

Response From Tom Greenleaf Top Rated Answer

They make "universal" dipsticks if you have a clue on size and if sealed inside or outside tube. Assorted types for assorted things you just need to change oil and filter the exact known correct level one qt. low, run engine and wait. Set the stick to that as the low mark then add the qt. and wait again. Set that as the FULL mark.

If anyone is mechanically inclined this is not hard to do. Use a punch or bend stick for markings.

If you know the size I.D. and O.D. of the handle end of the stick try pull your own junk yards and make one that is known longer OR get the right correct handle and seal end and use a stick from another that's known too long braze it or weld it on.

You aren't looking hard enough. You can find the correct dipstick for this with a hunt. Someone found a starter for it so stuff is out there no surprise.

If you want to keep this car find the right techs for help. IMO these were difficult and lousy designs all over the place from new and the right techs would deal with it to a point and be dealing with them (what few are left) and people with them would travel mega miles to find the right place that works on them. These were NOT well adapted cars for outside of Euro use and quit selling all of them here (US) for quite a while.

Just checked, NAPA doesn't list one on web site but will find one if you go in person.

Note: It was "given" to you for a reason. I wouldn't take on these either as too time consuming just for stupid stuff all over them unless you are really into this car I'd get it running and find the right new buyer who probably has a few spares for parts already on hand,

will not turn engine over when hot

Question From saffdave on will not turn engine over when hot

my car will start straight away when cold, but when it gets warm it will hardly crank engine over. if i leave it for 15mins it will spin engine, no problem. i have fitted a new starter motor and cleaned all leads, had battery tested and thats ok. this problem seems to have started since i had new head gasket fitted. i have only limited knowledge of engines and was wondering if timing could be out although car runs ok. any suggestions please.

Response From dr.donut

this sounds like a frayed wire from batt. to starter, batt. terminals? look around, maybe it was rubbing on something, with less wire to run through the current heats it up making resistance , the hotter it gets the more resistance, you need clean, top notch connections

Response From saffdave

i will give it another try although i have cleaned all terminals. the odd time i do get it started when its playing up. i can switch off and start it again it spins the engine like it should. thanks for reply

Response From Old 396

Have you ruled out an ignition switch issue or starter relay issue? Especially the starter relay. It's common for the bridge in the relay to get hung up or fail altogether in these vehicles.

Response From Mr.scotty

Knowing the year, make, and model would be great.
