Question From idahobigfoot on 89 buick lesabre starter

i have an 89 buick lesabre-hi miles but runs good
starter had been acting up recently then quit. i'm relatively sure it's the starter-
where is it and how do i get to it? Is it a stright-forward job or is it a pain?

Response From way2old

Clicky Clicky Read and enjoy. Testing and replacement procedures are there. Have fun.

Response From idahobigfoot Top Rated Answer

thanks way2old--it WAS the starter and the info was helpful
there were only 2 bolts-strangely they were 15mm-not american
the back one is a little tough to get to- I was able to get it out with a 3/8 drive wratchet, 3-in extension and a universal joint.
went back in easier

Response From way2old

Glad you got it. Have a cold one on me for the completed repair. (_)3

2002 buick lesabre starter wont turn over

Question From T ace on 2002 buick lesabre starter wont turn over

put a new transmission in the car 3.8 L motor tried to start wouldn't turn over used remote starter switch car starts runs for 5 seconds and stalls tested wire back to UH fuse box its good all the relays make clicking sound switched them out not the problem wondering which direction to go next has a new starter

Response From Hammer Time

Do you have a security light on or flashing when you try to start it?

Response From T ace

no security light on

Response From Hammer Time

All "crank, no start" conditions are approached in the same way. Every engine requires certain functions to be able to run. Some of these functions rely on specific components to work and some components are part of more than one function so it is important to see the whole picture to be able to conclude anything about what may have failed. Also, these functions can ONLY be tested during the failure. Any other time and they will simply test good because the problem isn't present at the moment.
If you approach this in any other way, you are merely guessing and that only serves to replace unnecessary parts and wastes money.

Every engine requires spark, fuel and compression to run. That's what we have to look for.

These are the basics that need to be tested and will give us the info required to isolate a cause.

1) Test for spark at the plug end of the wire using a spark tester. If none found, check for power supply on the + terminal of the coil with the key on.

2) Test for injector pulse using a small bulb called a noid light. If none found, check for power supply at one side of the injector with the key on.

3) Use a fuel pressure gauge to test for correct fuel pressure, also noticing if the pressure holds when key is shut off.

4) If all of these things check good, then you would need to do a complete compression test.

Once you have determined which of these functions has dropped out,
you will know which system is having the problem.

Response From T ace

I'm leaning toward a shorted wire or maybe something in the ignition circuit but not sure how to test it

Response From Hammer Time

You can lean any direction you want but until you do the testing I gave you, you will have no direction to go.

Response From T ace

i checked for spark at the plugs and coil they are good checked the small wire between the starter and under hood fuse box with ohm meter its good but not getting power to that wire to engauge starter when the key is turned on. put a remote starter switch between small terminal and battery turn on the key push the button it starts right up runs for 5 or 10 seconds then stalls hit the button it starts right up again runs for a few then stalls every time. I switched the relay with the horn relay it was exactly the same one no difference. cleaned all the grounds and checked all the wiring harnesses

Response From Hammer Time

OK, since you just don't want to follow my instructions I'll leave you to your own methods.

Response From T ace

fuel pressure is not gonna cause the starter not to work or injecter pulses wont effect the starter and how is a compression test gonna effect the starter so clearly im not getting power somewhere between the battery and the ignition switch or between the ignition switch and the starter I have spark I have fuel have not checked compression but the cars owner told me he pulled the fuel rail and upper intake when he put the tranny in so its prolly a vaccum leak making it stall now as far as i know a vaccum leak wont disable your starter Im not some guy sitting in the garage turning the key saying dude whats wrong I'm the guy trying to fix that guys mistake

Response From Hammer Time

i checked for spark at the plugs and coil they are good

How can you have a starter problem? You just said the car runs for 5 to 10 seconds. You said you have spark. I have no idea what you're even talking about any more.

Response From T ace Top Rated Answer

it says in the very first post i have to use a remote switch to get the starter to work and the subject for every post is 2002 buick lesabre starter wont turn over

Response From T ace

just to clairify i have a no crank issue, not a crank no start issue and when i jump the starter it starts the car but it stalls why would i be in the wiring electrical section if i have a crank no start issue

buick 2003 sometimes does not start

Question From Spenser on buick 2003 sometimes does not start

Hello!
i have a buick century 2003. Sometimes it does not start. When i turn the key, nothing happens (starter is not turning). I need to wait 5 -10 minutes... once i waited an hour. Then the car started. I changed the starter but the problem did not go away. Could it be related to the remote starter the car has (remote starter also does not start the car if the car is not starting)?

Response From Hammer Time Top Rated Answer

Sure it could. It could be any number of other things also. Someone needs to do so electrical testing to isolate where it's losing power in the circuit.

Response From Spenser

problem is that it happens maybe once a week or sometimes once a month and usually at grocery parking or driveway. Is there a way to do that testing when the car performs normally? By thew way mechanic already changed the starter, but that did not help.

Response From Hammer Time

Unfortunately, there is not unless you can find a way to trigger the failure by manipulating wire positioning.

Response From Spenser

Can i just hard wire a switch to starter motor from battery and run the wire to dash an have a switch there (like on Freightliner - button to start)?

Response From Hammer Time

No, you can't. Nothing is wired that simply any more. Your car has an immobilizer that will prevent it from starting when bypassed. It just has to be tested during the failure.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Just a maybe spencer: Can you see a connection with corrosion? As HT said, if it works fine in front of about any tech it's tough and guessing without replacing everything possible - stinks.

Car wants proper amp and volt delivery. When nothing things throughout vehicle may/can reset and old fart get home fix you could just tug on a battery cable for one more start that might work,

2000 Buick no starter engagement

Question From 84HyperZ on 2000 Buick no starter engagement

2000 Buick Century 3.1L w/ 80k miles; fully charged and healthy battery, terminals and cables in good condition, have had both the starter and the ignition control module tested and both passed. Wondering if maybe the ignition in the column may be at fault (chipped key). Insert key, turn key on and the dash lights up and flickers repeatedly but does nothing when trying to start the engine. Suggestions? Thanks.

Response From Sidom

Is the light that is flashing the security light or is it all the lights?

Response From 84HyperZ Top Rated Answer

That would be all the lights including DRL and park lamps.

Response From Hammer Time

If the dash lights are flickering, you have a power supply problem somewhere.
