Question From PJimmy on audi

Please help!
Posted: Jun 16, 2015 6:32 AM
audi , fuel problems

Car won't start 1985 Audi coupe 4000. Changed Sparks wires , ignition coil , fuel pump, fuel filter underneath car by pump. Still won't start I sprayed ether straight into the engine head and it fired up and died right away. Don't know what to check next. I'm going to check timing belt and fuel pump relay. But when the key is on you can hear the fuel pump faintly. What else could be wrong. Please help.

Response From Discretesignals Top Rated Answer

If the engine ran on starter fluid, more than likely you have a fuel problem. You should check fuel pressure next. It should be somewhere between 75-81 psi. Fuel volume should be around 760cc in 30 secs. The fuel system on that is Bosch's KE jetronic. You should read up on its theory of operation, so you understand how it works and how to troubleshoot it.

Response From PJimmy

How do I check fuel pressure I assuming the took to do so is relatively spendy? If my fuel.pressure is alright what else could be the issue. Fuel problem is what's I've been thinking. Unsure if it's the second fuel filter being clogged or if my fuel distributor is shit which was just relaxed withing.the last
year

Response From Discretesignals

If you don't have the correct pressure and volume, the fuel system doesn't work correctly.

Here is the procedure for checking system pressure:

SYSTEM PRESSURE TEST

1. Connect the pressure gauge with the proper adapter (VW 1318/5), and new sealing washers, between the fuel line at the cold start valve, and lower chamber test connection on the fuel distributor.
2. Remove fuel pump relay, and install a jumper wire with in-line switch.
3. Disconnect the plug from the differential pressure regulator.
4. With the gauge valve open, activate the fuel pump and read the pressure.
System pressure should be 5.2 - 5.6 bar (75 - 82 psi).
5. If pressure is below the specified value:
a. Test output quantity of fuel pump, (see "FUEL PUMP").
b. If fuel pump output is OK, replace pressure regulator.
6. If the fuel pressure is greater than specified:
a. Disconnect fuel tank return line from pressure regulator. (Place a fuel proof container under the regulator to catch the fuel).
b. Activate the fuel pump and read the fuel pressure.
c. If the pressure is OK, check for blocked fuel return line.
d. If pressure is still incorrect, replace the pressure regulator.

Response From PJimmy

Well if my fuel pressure is fine what would be next thing to check?

Look back to the post with instructions - it's spelled out as much as can be IMO,

Response From Discretesignals

Response From RUSSPROPHETT99

it is a 2.0, 5 speed manual, 4 door. thank you so much .

Response From Discretesignals

Do you have a multimeter or 12 volt test lamp handy?

Response From RUSSPROPHETT99

yes, i have a multimeter

Response From Discretesignals Top Rated Answer

The engine cranks but doesn't run? At the same time you do not have lights. Does that include head lamps?

If you have ever tried to read VW/AUDI track schematics, they are really difficult to interpret. If the starter is operating you should have power to the ignition switch. Just have to figure out what the other stuff you mentioned that doesn't work has in common.

Response From Discretesignals

There is a module in the vehicle called a comfort control module which is another name for a body control module. It controls various body functions such as lamps, window, lock, etc. It probably wouldn't be a bad idea to have the module scanned to see if it alive and communicating. There also might be some other computer modules that could be storing trouble codes that might help isolate what is going on. That bad part is the module can only be accessed by a high end scan tool or the factory scan tool. You'll probably have to get it to a repair shop that has that capability or a dealer to see what is going on. We could be checking circuits all day long, but we won't know if there are any modules that are down without communicating with them first.

Response From RUSSPROPHETT99

it wont crank, i getnothing but the battery light gets a little brighter whenin crank position but no noise no anything has power. i appreciate the help very much thank you

Response From Discretesignals

When you tested the battery, how was it tested? Are the battery cables clean and tight?
