I have a 1999 Mercury Mystique V6 and out of no where my car wouldnt start, no clicking sound what so ever my radio and lights come on fine, and I have a brand new battery only a few months old, I tried to jump it and I had plenty of power just wont turn over. I have recently replaced my neutral safety switch due to jerking issues which came back before my car stopped starting. Could these two issues be related? A co worker attempted to jump start my starter with a hammer and it makes the sound it should but when I put the key in the ignition and crank it, it still wont make the clicking sound could my solenoid be bad? FYI The check engine error codes coming up before the car stopped starting were:1131 1151 0708

Do you mean your co worker attempted to tap on the starter motor while you were attempting to crank the engine?

You need to make sure you have power to the starter solenoid when the ignition is turned to start when the engine doesn't want to crank.

If you have power to the starter solenoid, you should remove the starter and have it bench tested.

Yes that's what he did, how do I test if I have power to the starter solenoid? I was reading in my book for the car that you should connect a fused jumper lead between the battery (+) and the ignition switch terminal (small terminal) on the solenoid, but I have no idea how to do that its a little confusing. Just a test light that it lights and now I think it will by description. The tapping with a hammer is usually because brushes don't make a good contact but if no sound at all could be connection of little trigger wire or the solenoid plunger.

If you can target the trigger wire well at wire and at the stud (I think) it connects to see if the current goes to there but doesn't make it to solenoid at that time. If it does and no response, noise or anything decide on having that starter tested and it might behave or just replace it. All those wiring connections need to be known good or exact blame on starter assy could be confused,

Well I've attempted to get the starter out and have come out with only half of the starter unfortunately, the engine is so tight I'm having difficulty getting all of it out without taking apart all these hose that I'm not sure what they go to.......geez the starter is really hard to get to some walkthroughs said it was easy to get from the top and other said to go from the bottom, I went with the top since I did not have any jackstands for my car.

The top is the only way I've ever been able to go on that engine and there is no way to make it any easier. Its a pain in the ass no matter who you are. Welcome to our world. We get to have this kind of fun every day.

I guess I was just pretty sure I wanted to bring it to Advanced Auto and get it tested, just didn't realize it was that difficult. We followed directions straight from the book specifically for my car so I felt safe to move forward. We did disconnect the neg battery cable now were stuck on this step: Remove the fuel feed and return lines from the support bracket located on the accelerator cable bracket, and remove the fuel line bracket. We pulled off the clips securing the tubes but they wont separate I pull pull and pull nothing the tubes wont seperate can i put WD-40 or something I don't understand why it wont. If I don't get these tubes out of the way I cant get to the bolts on the back part of starter.

Leave the fuel lines alone. They don't need to be touched and only invite more trouble. Tom posted a pic showing where the bolts are for this. Problem is the positive cable. It has a plate going to the starter terminals and the wire goes further across the motor. You have barely any slack to get to remove the wiring from the terminals, and thats what is going to stop you from getting it out. I drink an 18 pack of beer and watch Hulk a few times through for inspiration prior to popping the hood. Its no coincidence that all Ford techs refer to your car as the Mistake and not Mystique. Its the sister car to the Contour and I don't dare post what we call that here so if you want to know PM me.

Sport - Did you test anything or just begin to rip it out of there? Which engine? Some are hell. Did it get power to trigger wire? You shouldn't be with it part out and battery neg still connected to do squat right now so put it back in place and test what you can.
Below if it shows are procedures for both possible engines and may not show up well in your view...........

2.0L Engine

See Figures 3 and 4

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove air intake resonators.
  3. Remove starter motor upper mounting bolts.
  4. Raise and support the vehicle.
  5. Remove the nuts on the starter terminals and remove the cables from the terminals.
  6. Remove the two starter lower retaining bolts and remove the starter.


To install:
  1. Place the starter into position and tighten the 2 lower retaining bolts to 15-20 ft. lbs (20-27 Nm).
  2. Place the starter cables onto the terminals and tighten the retaining nuts to 80-124 inch lbs. (5-7 Nm).
  3. Lower the vehicle.
  4. Install and tighten the upper retaining bolt to 15-20 ft. lbs (20-27 Nm).
  5. Install the air intake resonators.
  6. Connect the negative battery cable.


2.5L Engine

See Figure 5

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the engine air cleaner assembly.
  3. Remove the fuel feed and return lines from the support bracket located on the accelerator cable bracket, and remove the fuel line bracket.
  4. On vehicles equipped with a automatic transaxle, remove the gear selector and the gear shift cable bracket from the transaxle.
  5. Remove the air cleaner support bracket from the engine and transaxle mount.
  6. Remove the nuts on the starter terminals and remove the cables from the terminals.
  7. Remove the starter motor-to-transaxle case retaining bolt at the rear of the starter.
  8. Remove the two starter retaining bolts and carefully lift the starter from the transaxle case while disengaging the alignment pins.


To install:
  1. Position the starter onto the alignment pins and onto the transaxle case.
  2. Install the two starter retaining bolts and the rear retaining bolt and tighten them to 15-21 ft. lbs. (21-29 Nm).
  3. Place the starter cables onto the terminals and tighten the retaining nuts to 80-124 inch lbs. (5-7 Nm).
  4. Install the air cleaner support bracket.
  5. If removed, install the gear shift selector and bracket.
  6. Install the fuel line bracket and install the fuel lines in the bracket.
  7. Install the air cleaner assembly.
  8. Connect the negative battery cable.

Hi there,

Over the past few months I've been having trouble starting my car, and it has gotten progressively worse. I spoke to a mechanic friend of mine, gave him the symptoms, and he said that it is more than likely the Starter, but I wanted to make a post here just to make sure before I purchase a new Starter and get into the replacement of it...

When the problem first started occurring, I would turn the key tumbler back and forth from Run to the Start position four or five times (hearing the click each time) before the starter actually engaged to turn the motor over right away... in other words, once the starter gets the message, the battery has normal cranking capacity to just start the engine... but now over the past several months, it takes me 50 to a hundred times of turning the key tumbler from Run to Start back and forth before something in there seems to heat up, and then the same thing, the motor turns right over once the starter gets the message... my mechanic friend told me that it is more than likely the Starter Solenoid that is going bad...

But today, my fingers got sore trying to start my engine in the same fashion as explained above before I gave up because it never did engage the Starter, so it's time to fix it (I SHOULD have done it a few months ago, but I've been just dealing with it)...

So before I get into purchasing a new Starter, can someone please confirm that it is probably the Starter Solenoid like my mechanic friend suggested, or can it be something else, like the Relay Switch?... not sure if a Relay Switch would cause such symptoms or not, and my mechanic friend didn't even mention it, but I just want to make sure... THANKS for any help on this.

Nut- before you go throwing $ at it, have you tried cleaning ALL the connections? Battery, +&-, ground cables, connections at solenoud and starter. Good place to "start".

Thanks for the reply... I DID recently take a wire brush to both my positive and negative battery terminals and the cable connectors to it, so that wasn't the problem... but I have not tried cleaning the Solenoid and/or the Starter cable connections yet... MAINLY because my car is so low to the ground that it would require me to jack it up, and get underneath it to get to the Starter...

I was thinking that even if it WAS those connectors on the Starter/Solenoid, getting a new Starter would be a good idea because I've owned my car for eight years, and who knows if the Starter has ever been replaced at all yet before that... don't know how long those Starters can last...

There is one more little piece of evidence that might help you or someone else with advice who knows about these things... when I rock the key back and forth numerous times before it actually starts, I KNOW I'm getting close to it finally making a connection when I hear more of a thumping noise going back from Start to Run with the key... once I start hearing that different type of a click (more of a thump than a click), I know it's finally going to make the connection and engage the Starter... I don't know if dirty connections to the Starter/Solenoid would cause that, but obviously something ends up heating up in the Solenoid after SO many times of rocking the key back and forth to finally make a connection to start... even knowing this, you still think that it COULD be dirty connectors on the Starter/Solenoid, instead of just a bad Solenoid itself??... I DID recently take a wire brush to both my positive and negative battery terminals and the cable connectors to it, so that wasn't the problem..

Did you actually remove the cables and clean the inside or did you just clean the outside of the terminals, which really does nothing?

Starters can and do last 1-200 k miles easily. I have 2 going now that have over 200k. Did you clean the neg cable where it attaches to the engine? I see no need in replacemnt from what you've said so far. The switching of the key back & forth sounds like the start system is overcoming resistance and then spinning the engine over fine. Bet if you had the starter off and tested, it would probably test good.

Hello, I have a 1990 Mercury Topaz (2.3 L automatic, ~180000 km) that keeps trying to start when the key is in the "on" position.

I drove the car for about a year (and it was very reliable, no obvious mechanical or electrical issues) before parking it after being gifted a newer vehicle. I moved to a new city after that, so it was parked for almost two years before I checked up on it to get it ready to sell. It started right away, but it keeps trying to turn over even after it has started.

I would guess this problem is due to the ignition, starter, starter solenoid or some combination of those. But I'm not too knowledgeable when it comes to this stuff, so I'd really appreciate any help narrowing down what the cause is.

Almost sounds like a starter problem, but to be sure, if it was me I would began checking with a volt meter from the starter back to see where the problem is.
