  • Our starter solenoids contain heavy-duty copper contacts that reduce the effect of arcing and extend solenoid life. Our starter solenoids have more pure copper windings than found on most vehicles to create a stronger magnetic field. Our polyester-insulated magnet wire, cadmium-plated copper discs and solid contact bolts reduce voltage drop and deliver full battery power to the starter while providing greater protection against electrical overload. Pure copper battery terminal studs reduce resistance to permit higher current flow, even in the hottest environments, for better performance. We understand and expect the demand for quality, our starting and charging system products feature high grade materials for extended service life. As a global manufacturer of original equipment ignition products, we maintain complete quality control throughout the manufacturing process from componentry to finished product.

if the battery is good-take battery to autozone or mechanic to have load tested to be sure-assuming its ok,make sure both cables are intact, clean and tight at battery, starter solenoid and engine ground.if ok,its very possible to have a fried fusible link wire at the starter solenoid.hope this info helps....

Response From DrElectrics

This could be a few things. DEFINATELY NOT THE ALTERNATOR. The ALT is your charger for the battery. If the battery is fine, then your ALT is working fine also. The problem might be: The starter solenoid - Current from your ignition goes to the solenoid on your starter motor. If it is busted, the plunger that makes the drive engage will not activate. This will make NO SOUND. So when you turn the key, nothing at all will happen. If you turn the key and it clicks, that means the solenoid plunger is firing, but the starter motor could be cooked.

For the "no warning light" problem, check your battery posts, and make sure the terminals are clean and on it properly.

Hope i helped.

I have a 1995 Ford Mercury Sable and it won't start.
I left my car for about 10 or 15 minutes today. I shut it off and locked it. I went back to get in and start it and it didn't start. I noticed my interior lights were on but when I checked my int. light switch it was off. It seems to me that when I got out of the car and shut the door something didn't trigger right and my int. lights stayed on instead of shutting off like they had done 20 minutes before when I shut the door. When I turned the key to start the vehicle it clicked a couple times and the lights on my dash flashed on and off real quickly. I tried getting a boost from someone I work with and still nothing. When they took the cables off their battery and touched them together there was a spark but I couldn't even turn my lights on. No radio no door locks no nothing.
Could you tell me what kind of a problem I could have? What could all this mean? Could it be just a dead battery? Or could it be my alternator or starter?

Response From DrElectrics

Leaving interior lights on for 10-15 minutes wouldnt drain the battery so bad that you couldnt start the car. They are 3-5w light bulbs, so they dont take much juice. The clicking means your starter is fine, it just doesnt have enough power to push the drive into mesh (thing that makes the car start). Could be ALT or Battery. I would go for the simple fix 1st, NEW BATTERY. As i have recommended before, go a GEL CELL BATTERY. No maintenance, longer lasting, but a little more expensive.

When they took the cables off their battery and touched them together there was a spark but I couldn't even turn my lights on

Your battery might have enough charge in it after being boosted to give off spark. Make sure when your boosting, the other car helping you revvs the engine to a constant 4-5rpm. And boost for about 5 mins like this. This allows their ALT to keep charging the helpers battery because its working twice as hard. after 5 mins of this, keep cables connected to both batteries, tell helper to ease off, and try and start you car. Did you do this??

Response From Guest

I am writing you back to tell you that I got my 95 Sable working. The problem was that my battery cables weren't tight so they kept "shorting out" not connecting properly and that caused the power to go on and off!! Thank you anyways. Hopefully this helps other people in the future with their cars.

Response From DrElectrics

Glad it got fixed mate, i think i may have over diagnosed the problem. Glad your on your way anyways!

Question From redneck_raider2009 on 98 buick century wont start

i have a 1998 buick century custom with a 3.1 v6. the starter failed after a re-manufactured starter/solenoid assembly was defective starter two just clicked even when i jumped it so it probally is not the battery, the wires are clean (sanded) the person who took off the original(forgot) how the wires came off and i never had a chance to look or label them (my wife's) cousin and three days after he went home i am still trying to figure it out PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!

Response From Hammer Time

The purple wire goes to the small terminal and the battery cable and all others go to the main post.

Response From redneck_raider2009

I did that and all it did was click repeatedly. after that i un-bolted the starter and set it in the flywheel housing and watched as my father-in-law tried starting the engine and the gear comes out and wont spin

Response From Hammer Time

That's a bad starter. These discount parts stores are selling a lot of junk.

Response From redneck_raider2009 Top Rated Answer

i took a pair of jumper cables hooked to the battery and ground it on the starter housing and touched the positive clamp to the other post and the small post and it worked the way it was supposed to once i got a good connectionto the post that the starter motor is hooked to

Response From Hammer Time

Then you need to check all your connections in the car because your doing the exact same thing in both instances. Power to both terminals makes the starter engage.

thank you very much for your time

Question From 93PA on no crank but then starts on 2nd try

Hello. Sometimes no crank. Lights do not dim. Security light not on. If I get a "no crank" and do NOT return key to off position and retry it will start.

Response From Discretesignals Top Rated Answer

You'll probably have to make sure you have power down on the small wire on the starter solenoid when it doesn't want to crank. You can also try tapping on the starter motor while someone holds the key in the start position to see if the starter motor is the problem.

Response From 93PA

Was trying to check suggested connection when the bolt broke. New starter and so far so good. Thanx.

Response From Discretesignals

Bolt broke? Smacking it too hard?

Response From 93PA

Just a love tap. Was disconnecting lead from the ignition. Solenoid decided it wanted to be recycled

Question From Swooshski on 1998 Buick Century

I have a 1998 Buick Century with a 3.1 Litre V6. When I try to start it it blows the 40 amp fuse located under the hood that is tagged for 'crank' in the #2 spot. As long as the key is on everything is fine, but when I turn it to engage the starter that is when the fuse blows. If I turn the key on, and jump from battery to solenoid the starter will engage and engine will start/run.

The starter has been checked out and it's OK. I have taken dash & steering wheel covers off and traced the wires. I did not find any bare wire or indication of shorting. Any Ideas of what could be causing this?

Also, I am trying to locate a wiring schematic for this car.

Response From DanD

Because it’s only the crank fuse that’s blowing I would suspect the crank relay in the underhood junction box (same place as the crank fuse) or the transaxle range switch (neutral safety switch) on the top of the transaxle. There’s also a chance that the yellow wire between the relay and range switch has shorted to ground but unless this thing has seen some form of damage due to an accident the wiring harness is fairly well protected.
If I were checking this problem I think I would test the range switch first. You could try disconnecting the range switch and then connect the yellow wire to the purple wire on the harness side of the connector with a fused jumper wire. If the fuse holds and the engine cranks when you turn the ignition switch to the start position, you’ve found the problem? There maybe more then one yellow or purple wires in the harness; the wiring for the starter circuit will be of the larger gauge.
Dan.

Response From Swooshski

Thanks for the reply DanD. If you don't mind, a couple of questions.

Can you tell me exactly where that neutral switch is located on the transaxle?

Also, if I had to replace a relay .... how do you remove it? I tried gently pulling on it (like a fuse) but it wouldn't come out ... so I quit messing with it until I could get more info.

Any additional info you can provide in response to these questions is greatly appreciated.

Response From DanD

The range switch is on the top of the transmission case under the shifter mechanism; have someone shift the trans for you while you have a look at what’s moving.
Some of the relays in the junction box seem as though they are welded in; just genitally force (LOL) it out of its connector. You never know if it’s the only one that is that stubborn; you may have found your short to ground as it could be melted into position?
Dan.

Hey DanD. Just wanted to say thank you for your good advice, it helped me determine what the problem was ...... an intermittently failing starter/solenoid. Unfortunately GM doesn't make the solenoid available via parts. But your advice on the wiring & routing came in real handy in troubleshooting this. You saved me some time and work. Thanks again!

Response From Swooshski

Well, what I thought was fixed isn't. I thought I had nailed it down to a shorting starter solenoid. So since I had a lifetime warranty on the current starter I took it in and got a new one, no charge. The car has started 15-20 times without a problem since then. So yesterday I finally finished replacing the rack/pinion unit (fixing another problem) and took it to get a front end alignment done. The guy went to put it on the rack and the darn thing wouldn't start ... blown crank fuse again.

I'm leaning toward the relay being flaky and will be looking at that in a bit. I've put a meter on the neutral safety switch and can see voltage vary as the gearshift is moved, so I think that switch is operating as it should... allowing 12+ volts to starter circuit when it's in Park or Neutral. Otherwise, no volatage to the circuit. If anybody has any other suggestions I'd be very interested in hearing them. Thanks.

Response From Swooshski

EUREKA! I FOUND IT!

Worn wire (purple) in wiring harness to starter. It was grounding out to black ground wire to block. Had to strip the whole harness from neutral switch to starter but I found that bugger.

Thanks for the help to those that replied! It's Miller time!

Response From Old 396

What exactly do you mean by not starting?
Is the engine cranking and not turning over or is it not even cranking?
Below are the basic fundamentals that must be in order and in place for any vehicle with an internal combustion engine to start.

A fully charged battery
A battery capable of accepting a charge
A battery capable of delivering a charge
An operational starter
An operational ignition switch
An operational neutral safety switch
Fuel must reach all spark plugs?
Spark must reach all spark plugs?
Fuel must be present at the fuel rail?

With the key on and engine off do you here the fuel pump coming on?
Are the fuel injectors firing?
Is there an excessive exhaust back-pressure issue?
Is adequate and proper cylinder compression present in all cylinders?

There is more but for now post back the results of the above.

Response From redkerri

battery fully charged and brand new.turn key in ignition andlights on dash come on on dash turn key 2 start position and there is a quiet click under glove box area and the battery charge meter regesters a drain but the starter doesnt engage, moter doesnt turn over, the starter doesnt make any noiseat all as if the sylanoid is getting power. fuses seem good . cannot locate starter relay ?????????

Redkeeri,

There is no starter relay. Ignore the clicking sounds coming from behind the dashboard or glove box. Those are just relays being initiated (via voltage), but those relays have nothing to do with the starting of your car. It sounds to me like you could have a defective starter. He's how you are going to check it.

Get a second person to sit behind the wheel and turn the key all the way foward to the full start position. The key must be held in this position. Now you check for voltage at the starter solenoid with a test light. If the light (DOES NOT) glow then post back and let us know. If it (DOES) light up then hit the starter and solenoid with a hammer a few times. if the car starts replace the starter, as it is defective.
