Response From Mr.scotty

So it is getting spark at the spark plugs rite?
Your missing one of the other things hammer time posted.

Response From Hammer Time

No, he never said that.

Response From Mr.scotty Top Rated Answer

Ok.., That's what i wanted to know cause he didn't say.

All "crank, no start" conditions are approached in the same way. Every engine requires certain functions to be able to run. Some of these functions rely on specific components to work and some components are part of more than one function so it is important to see the whole picture to be able to conclude anything about what may have failed. Also, these functions can ONLY be tested during the failure. Any other time and they will simply test good because the problem isn't present at the moment.
If you approach this in any other way, you are merely guessing and that only serves to replace unnecessary parts and wastes money.

Every engine requires spark, fuel and compression to run. That's what we have to look for.

These are the basics that need to be tested and will give us the info required to isolate a cause.

1) Test for spark at the plug end of the wire using a spark tester. If none found, check for power supply on the + terminal of the coil with the key on.

2) Test for injector pulse using a small bulb called a noid light. If none found, check for power supply at one side of the injector with the key on.

3) Use a fuel pressure gauge to test for correct fuel pressure, also noticing if the pressure holds when key is shut off.

4) If all of these things check good, then you would need to do a complete compression test.

Once you have determined which of these functions has dropped out,
you will know which system is having the problem.

1987 dodge ram50 won't start

Question From jgigrich on 1987 dodge ram50 won't start

My roomie just bought an 87 dodge ram50 at an auction, they told him it ran, it doesn't (he shouldn't have trusted them, I know!). Anyway, I'm trying to diagnose why it won't start. While I know more than him about cars, I still don't actually know all that much. 300k on the motor, it was the bigger 4 cylinder, 2.6 i believe.

So far I have
1 checked for spark at the wires running to spark plugs (spark plugs look new), it has a good spark
2 put starter fluid as deep in the engine as I could get it, still wouldn't start
3 popped off the distributor cap and tried starting to make sure it spins - i was told this would mean the timing belt/chain was still intact. There was a spinning part in there, looked like about 1 revolution every 1.5 seconds.

Oil is not cloudy or milky so I am assuming not head, everyone I have talked to says it is likely a lack of compression but I have no idea how to diagnose this... please help

Response From Hammer Time Top Rated Answer

Just be cause the distributor is turning does not mean the car is still in time. What you need to do is a complete compression test.

Question From MaxPower on 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 - She's old

2001 Dodge Ram 1500 - about 130000 miles

I put her in storage about 5 years ago and things came up. She ran great before but hasn't been started or moved in about 4 years. I know jack about working on cars but I want to get it running again. What would you recommend needs to be done and the type of money I'd have to put into it to get it running?

Response From Discretesignals

I know jack about working on cars

You really should call around some shops in your area. Prices are going to vary on what will need to be done to get it running. It is going to need to be inspected by someone. There is more to getting a vehicle running and safe to drive besides putting fresh fuel in it.

Response From kev2

Inspections ? Not all are subject to those draconian money makers..... Yes I believe in routine checks but state emission or "safety" checks are not proving themselves.
I suggest Get it running and evaluate. This is a simple DIYer project right now.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

I don't agree for once Kev2. Not a DIY thing for someone who stated he doesn't know "Jack" about cars.
DS can speak for himself but my view of the suggestion was to be inspected or done by a real tech no for a "State" inspection thing of which I agree with you - mostly pointless.
OP= MaxPower: Send this out for initial check and start up stating what you know of how long it's been 'stored' and how? Was that stored in a garage or just left outside sitting in the weather? It will totally matter on what it will take.
Do the tires have enough air to even tow it away? I don't know if you can tend to even that much unless you say.
A real tech knowing this sat would pay a lot of attention to the first minute of run time and prep for that as all oil has drained down and into oil pan. Let the tech decide that approach. Engine may not turn if moisture got to it and let the pro handle that.

State what you want when it's done such as you want it all checked out to be ready to use and depend on it again or what.

Even the tow out should be professional so let people that do their things do them,

Response From Tom Greenleaf

MaxPower: Your post posted before I saw it so another on that:

Don't just go try to crank this up now to move it at all. An engine can kill itself if it's not right and you do via jump starting or whatever you need to know more than I think you do which is fine - YOU are asking.

I'm done with work but this was my thing for myself and others WILDLY OLDER AND LONGER STORED ASSORTED WAYS THAN THIS!

It will be fine if you just let the folks who know what to check and do, do their thing at your request. People don't have to learn every trade or thing except to find out those who do which is the suggestion,

fuel - four year gas has got to go... In new fuel add 1 bottle seafoam or techron fuel detergent to clean things up.
>>
Oil - might want to change that also . Also add I bottle "risolone" an oil detergent to clean things up.
>>
battery - new would be the choice- clean cables neg and pos both ends.
>>
Spark plugs- you would remove old SO good time to replace with new - use correct brand-yes it matters

>>
Now getting it started... remove ALL spark plugs, disable fuel injectors, with a GOOD battery crank it a few times you want oil circulated, those long sitting components moving without a 'load' on them.
>>
then replace plugs, enable fuel and it should start - just let us know what issues you encounter...
Do you need tips on removing fuel, disabling injectors - just ask... ok?

Response From MaxPower

Thanks for the advice. I may take you up on more tips in the future.

I want to get it either running or as best as I can and then bring it into a shop for inspections and what not. That's why I wanted opinions and ideas from folks who know what they're doing. I won't have a chance to work on in for a another month. It's stored in doors but not heated and it's still cold where I'm at.

1994 Dodge RAM van loses power after rain

Question From Guest on 1994 Dodge RAM van loses power after rain

I have a 1994 Dodge Ram 2500 1/2 ton conversion van. During or after a rain, it sputters and loses power (especially when going up a hill....when more power is needed). During these episodes, it will jerk and drop it's speed to a crawl.

My husband changed the distributor cap, spark plugs and wires and this didn't change it. A friend of ours spray painted some wires (near the upper right section when looking at the opened hood). He said it would seal the wires. I'm not sure what these wires are going to.

It seems a bit better now. At least the loss of power doesn't last as long...it will pick back up like normal after driven for a mile or so. I haven't attempted to drive it in the rain though, so I'm just referring to after a rain that it is better.

Our mechanic doesn't have a clue about what it could be. Any suggestions?

Thanks!!
Barb

this is usually a symptom of your spark plug wires arcing. try to find out what wires your friend spray painted? spray painting obviously is not the proper repair. paint is not a good insulator for electricity

if he felt the wires had to be sealed he must have seen some chauffing of the wire insulations exposing the wire and that also is arcing.

Response From Guest

Thanks for your reply...but let me ask a follow-up.

To get to the spark plugs you have to take the doghouse off (inside the van). They can't be seen from outside, looking under the hood. So, I know this is not what the friend spray painted. I have my husband hunt him down (he was only here briefly, out of town) and ask what these wires go to.

Could the new spark plug wires my husband but in have been done incorrectly? I thought it was a pretty straightforward thing. I just hate for him to go to the immense hassle of getting that doghouse off again if there is another source of the problem. Once off, those plugs and wires weren't easy to get to.

Thanks!
Barb

Response From Guest

I suggest checking your air intake, sounds like your getting moisture in the air system while driving in the rain.

Response From way2old

It is possible the friend sprayed the relays up above the battery. Look at this area closely and see if you see any corrosion under the paint application your friend sprayed. This is not a good thing to do around electrical componets. Some of them are very sensitive to minor changes in current or voltage. There is an auto-shut down relay in there that will cause problems with running or starting. I will try to remember to look at the shop Monday toi see if I can offer any more information. Come on in here Dodge guys.

2001 Dodge Ram won't run under 2000rpm

Question From charger2001 on 2001 Dodge Ram won't run under 2000rpm

I have a 2001 Dodge ram 1500 4x4 v8 360cui It sat in my yard for a little while, because of a broken tie rod. It sat for about 7 months I just put a new tie rod on 2days ago. i changed the oil and spark plugs, cap, and wires. It started right up and ran for about 5 minutes and shut off. I started it again and started running real rough and shut off again. after a few more start ups, It refused to start. so I took one of the spark plugs out to see if it was getting a spark. I noticed the plug was wet with oil. Then i checked the oil and noticed the smell of gas present in the oil. Could the piston rings be worn, or are the cylinder heads shot

Response From Loren Champlain Sr Top Rated Answer

charger; It sounds as if the engine is severely over-fueling. Check all of your connections, firing order, ect. Make sure the CTS is plugged in. Check all vacuum lines. If the CTS was knocked loose, the system will go rich, by default. If you have a vacuum leak, the MAP sensor will see that as 'under acceleration' and go rich. Same with the fuel pressure regulator. You may have to remove and dry all of the plugs, then start over. Once the problem is found and corrected, you should change the oil again. How was this running prior to the broken tie rod? Do you have a CEL illuminated? See if you can retrieve any stored codes and post them.
