FORD 5.4L 3V spark plug removal

Question From zmame on FORD 5.4L 3V spark plug removal

Ok if any of you have changes plugs in a ford 5.4L 3V you know why i'm writing this..

I work at ford dealership in eastern, ontario, canada i have done about 30 of them now
The best way to get them out i found

Step 1: Do an engine flush (we use teraclean) removes carbon
Step 2: after flush run the piss out of it for about 30 mins
Step 3: park vechical overnight
Step 4:Push vechical in don't even start it
step 6 change plugs

this seems to remove and or soften the carbon build up on plugs so you don't break them off in the chamber.

Now of course this is not a guarantee this is what i've been doing seems to be the best method so far if you have any other please share.

IF YOU BROKE OFF THE PLUG OFF IN CHAMBER AND NEED FORD TSB FOR INSTRUCTIONS TO REMOVE IT EMAIL ME hemi_man_80@hotmail.com and ill mail you the TSB in .PDF format(adobe reader) ]

---------------------------------------------------
ADDED NOTES:
After reciving many emails there is some other tips I would like to add too.

When your turning the plug if it creeks thats a good sound means the shaft is moving its when it stops creeking you have to stop try re-tightening a bit loosen a bit then fill plug cavity with carb clean and let it sit for a bit. sometimes this helps.

Response From way2old

We run the vehicle to operating temp and then remove coils, loosen plugs and spray penetrant. Have a cup of coffee or leave it overnight(dependant on time of day. Then it usually comes out fairly easily. Was nice to see the tools available aftermarket now. We borrowed one from Ford and had a machinist friend of mine make us a set. We only have had 1 spark plug break out of 6 vehicles. Might try your way to see how the techs like it.

Response From zmame Top Rated Answer

there is also a TSB for putting Motocraft high temp anti-seize on the shaft of the plug to prevent carbon build up.. not sure how well that works overtime yet.

Response From way2old

I don't think it has to be Motorcraft. I bought a bottle or Motorcrsft and found it is nickel based anti-sieze. Might look for a cheaper brand to see if it works.
I just now noticed you had 2 Champion plugs shown. I have never had good luck using Champion in any product but Chrysler. We compared 4 Champion and 4 Motorcraft in same vehicle (4.6L Crown Vic) and after 15k the Champions were misfiring. The Mororcraft were left in for over 80k before we had to change them. Just my opinion of course.

Response From Loren Champlain Sr

Way2; When my hemi was still fairly new, all that was available was Champion. Normally, I wouldn't put Champions in my lawnmower, but had no choice. Now, they are available in Autolite, and am sure other brands, as well.
Gettin' old, but seems that there were some big block Fords (351M/400 maybe) that would carbon up the threads just below the head surface and would damage the threads on the way out. We used to use (this is back in the early 70's) combustion chamber cleaner prior to removing them. Seemed to work great. At the time, we got it from The Schraeder Co. in So. CA. They also made it for GM and Kiekoffer(inc.)/Mercury. Now, we use the MotorVac.

Response From trw

ive had better luck by just spraying them
down with a little liquid wrench or wd40 and letting
them sit for 2-3 hours on a cold engine that seems
to work for me but maybe not practicall for a
tecknition to do especially when your paying

70=80 $ bucks an houre for him to do that a way

Response From zmame

** Update ** Well as i discovered today dosen't work well with vechicals with over 200km lol.. I did one today broke 7 out of 8 off.. don't want to go back to work on monday going to be there a while.. I herd that a company has made a 1 pice plug so they don't break off.. wondering if any of you have tryed them?..we had a customer with NGK plugs and ran like a bag of Sh!t.. I think Champion makes them not sure.. since i have 05 F150 5.4 I change mine once evey 60 km (30.000 miles roughly) its a bit of a pain in the ass at $15 a plug.

Response From way2old

Maybe want to see if you can get stainless steel plugs. We put some in the 460's when the originals rusted in the heads. Not sure where they came from though. I thimk AC Delco makes them.

Response From zmame

Just posted champions only ones i could find a decent size picture of .. we use motorcraft obviously working at ford dealership

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Speaking of plugs - I've had at least six Champions in taper seated applications that were both rusted and probably overtightened leave just threads in the hole and not hex! Found a pic which just happens to show an NGK but the Champions did it the most. Scares the crap out of you then trusting a screw extractor to remove just the threads.

Been using just silicone smear on the taper which was the problem with typical old GM plugs and no problems since on any brand.

I'm with Loren on where that brand belongs - on the store shelf unless there's any alternative! Get's hard finding non Champions for weed whackers and so forth though

Pic of what was happening too much to me but the NGK shown,

Question From dog_4003 on 1994 ford f150 2wd truck

i have a 94 ford f150 2wd truck 5.0 v8 302 cid. engine quit firing. no fire at spark plug. any idears what it could be. engine over 200,000 miles.

Response From Hammer Time

Test for injector pulse using a small bulb called a noid light. If none found, check for power supply at one side of the injector with the key on.

Response From dog_4003 Top Rated Answer

no disrespect. but i said the spark plugs are not firing. what does that have to do with the fuel injectors. they have no baring on the spark plugs. im thinking its coil or maybe problem in distributer.

Response From Hammer Time

You just proved how little you know and how much help you really need but unfortunately, I don't have time for people that expect me to justify everything. I'll just go help someone else instead.

Response From Discretesignals

What is interesting about TFI(thick film ignition) is that as long as you have power, ground, and a signal called PIP (Profile ignition pickup) from the stator in the distributor, you'll have spark. You could unplug the engine computer and still have spark while cranking the engine if the ignition module is good and you have a signal going to it from the stator.

Checking for injector pulse would tell you if you have a PIP signal from the stator going to the engine computer to fire the injectors. That same PIP signal goes to the ignition module.

Response From Hammer Time

That's a lot more typing than what should have been sufficient.

Response From Discretesignals

Your probably right, but hopefully the OP now kind of understands what the injectors have in common with the ignition system. They share the stator signal.

Response From nickwarner

He said check injector pulse because if you don't have it that's a fast way to narrow down why your don't have spark. There are posts locked to the top of the forum for people to read titled if it will crank and not start. I would suggest reading them.

best way to remove spark plugs from 92 ford explorer passenger side of engine

Question From tiger88mm on best way to remove spark plugs from 92 ford explorer passenger side of engine

driver side spark plugs was no problem-3 out and 3 new ones in,now it's time for the passenger side ,I can see them but is very tight with hoses ,alternator ,air intake,so if any one can give me a better idea as to what I need to remove or how to get to them please advise

Response From farm kid

If I remember correctly, removing the front tire and using a swivel socket was the easiest way to get to those.

Response From tiger88mm

thanks for the info ,was able to get the first two out on right side but the last one towards the fire wall and across from the AC evaporator is the problem, can't get to it from wheel well just need some small hands and a special tool, got about 3 inches to get a socket in there.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

If you can get the plug wire off this should be easy just you don't have the right sockets and tricks. Dang - there are plug sockets that are deeper, 12 point, 6 point, hex on end so you can use an open end or box wrench not a ratchet and more.

Wish I could muster a picture of even several assorted types. Hope it helps that you just know there are lots of assorted types and you wont just find them in parts stores for some real tricky ones.

Again - If you can get the boot off it will work with plug socket that you put a wrench on the end where a 3/8th ratchet would have gone instead,

Even something like this maybe just shorter or cut one down and drill holes like that idea,

Sorry if they don't show or expire or just search images for spark plug sockets,

Response From Tom Greenleaf

I don't recall anything wild for these other than getting things carefully out of the way.

Not sure on this but sometimes from underside or thru wheel well might be easier,

Question From Ajaxs1988 on 2000 Ford Explore Spark plug Problems

So i had to change my spark plugs today and before i changed them my truck was have a little bit of trouble starting and the typcal worn sparkplug sound, the odd clicking sound. And now that i changed and replaced the spark plugs the truck is acting horriable. aweful ideling, the clicking sound is much worse and louder and it is making a horriable smell. i took out all the sparkplugs and re gapped them & replaced the sparkplug cables. also when i first removed the spark plug from cylinder number 3 it had oil or coolant on it, which either means the head gasket is F***ed or my valve guides or piston rings are worn out; but why is my truck ideling worse and making a messed up smell. Please Help me i have a 2000 FordExplorer 4.0 V6 OHV. i dont understand how a new sparkplugs and cables can cause the truck to act worse. I know what i'm doing i always work on my own cars and trucks. PLEASE HELP ME THIS IS MY WIFE'S AUNTS TRUCK AND SHE CANT AFFORD A MECHANIC

Response From Sidom Top Rated Answer

I would have to agree that you crossed a wire....

I'm curious about the "typical worn spark plug sound"?

Response From Discretesignals

Could you elaborate on the clicking sound you are hearing? Spark plugs generally don't make any noises, but if you have secondary voltage finding ground other than through the plug, you'll probably hear snapping noises.

Did you make sure you don't have any wires crossed? If the check engine light is on while the engine is running, what code(s) are being stored? Can you post a picture of the #3 plug. Generally if your burning coolant the plug will be steam cleaned.

Probably wouldn't be a bad idea to run a compression check on the engine before you go any further. Be sure to disable the fuel pump and ignition system. Make sure the battery is fully charged, so you don't get any false readings.

Question From pajarosd on focus has water sitting in spark plug area

2002 ford focus 16v 2.0 has water sitting in the spark plug area. The oil has no sign of water.

Response From Hammer Time Top Rated Answer

That's usually an external coolant leak.
