98 Chrysler Concorde cylinder misfire detected

Question From fausty on 98 Chrysler Concorde cylinder misfire detected

Hello gentlemen,

I was driving to the gas station when my car died. I limped it home and plugged the ODB scanner in. I am getting a code read of 0301, and 0301 P. The book that came with it tells me this is "cylinder misfire detected". What could be causing this?

Thank you in advance for any advice.

Response From Hammer Time

There are many possible causes of a misfire but a single cylinder misfiring will not cause the car not to run. You would have to go back to basics to determinee why it won't run.

All "crank, no start" conditions are approached in the same way. Every engine requires certain functions to be able to run. Some of these functions rely on specific components to work and some components are part of more than one function so it is important to see the whole picture to be able to conclude anything about what may have failed. Also, these functions can ONLY be tested during the failure. Any other time and they will simply test good because the problem isn't present at the moment.
If you approach this in any other way, you are merely guessing and that only serves to replace unnecessary parts and wastes money.

Every engine requires spark, fuel and compression to run. That's what we have to look for.

These are the basics that need to be tested and will give us the info required to isolate a cause.

1) Test for spark at the plug end of the wire using a spark tester. If none found, check for power supply on the + terminal of the coil with the key on.

2) Test for injector pulse using a small bulb called a noid light. If none found, check for power supply at one side of the injector with the key on.

3) Use a fuel pressure gauge to test for correct fuel pressure, also noticing if the pressure holds when key is shut off.

4) If all of these things check good, then you would need to do a complete compression test.

Once you have determined which of these functions has dropped out,
you will know which system is having the problem.

Response From fausty

I should have specified that by limped it home, I meant it does still run. It died, I restarted it and drove it home on presumably 5 cylinders. When I came to a yield or stop I had to shift to neutral and give it gas to keep it from dying again. Sorry for not being specific.

Response From Hammer Time

How about an engine size, mileage, history of past ignition parts replaced?

I assume your check engine light was flashing. That is done so that even the most naive driver would know to stop driving the car because you are doing severe damage to the catalytic Converter. Flashing red lights mean STOP and call a tow truck.

Response From fausty

3.2 v6, 137,000 miles. I bought it with 100k on the engine so I cannot speak for anything replaced before that. I have replaced the vehicle speed sensor, changed the oil every 2000 miless.

Yes the engine light was flashing. The gas station it happened at is two blocks from my house, I am not naive. I don't have the money for a tow truck for a two block ride.

I went to autozone and bought plugs and coils. I am going to try that now and see if it fixes the problem.

Response From fausty Top Rated Answer

Problem found.

When I removed the coil pack and insulator the spark plug came out with it. The threads appear to be shot in the block. I cannot thread in a new plug, it just spins in there.

Options?

Response From fausty

I bought a helicoil thread kit. Worked fine. Go ahead and delete this thread if you like.

Response From Hammer Time

I hope you had a way to get all those metal chips out of the cylinder.

Response From fausty

I did. I used a bunch of grease on the tap to catch most of it, and I used a shop vac with a little hose duct taped to the end of it to suck anything else out. I ran it around inside of there for a good 20 minutes.

Response From nickwarner

Not a bad way to do it and glad it worked. If you have to do one in the future it helps to have a borescope to physically look into the chamber to verify it is clear. I'm not sure if you can rent them at parts stores or not.

1997 Chrysler Concord w/3.5V6 DOHV oil leak

Question From kirkbrim on 1997 Chrysler Concord w/3.5V6 DOHV oil leak

Changed the plugs (this engine has those long spark plug access tubes that are nearly straight up and require a long extension) and when I retrieved the plugs there was fresh oil in 5 of the 6 tubes. Oil was up about 1 inch on the plug socket. When I re-started a lot of blue smoke came out. The dash oil light flickers on and off at warm idle 6,000rpm. How does oil pool up there? Never had any driveway oil leaks until now. Any ideas?

Response From DanD Top Rated Answer

I have also seen oil in these tubes; due to them leaking from the bottom; where they are threaded into the cylinder head. You may need to remove the tubes and replace or reseal them. The service manual recommends replacing the tubes, due to them having a sealant already applied from their manufacturer. But I’ve been ok with removing the tubes; cleaning all oils from their threads and the threads in the cylinder head. And then applying, a bead of high quality automotive silicone to the threads; before reinstalling them.

Dan.

This shows the upper seal that Hammer Time mentioned.

This one shows the specialized tool for removing the tubes. LOL
I think almost all DIY’ers will have a couple of vice grips hanging around.

Response From Hammer Time

The valve cover gasket has spark plug tube seals and they are leaking. When you removed the plug, the oil drained into the cylinder. That's the reason for the temporary smoke. Replace the valve cover gaskets to fix it.

Chrylser 3.5l wont rev over 2500

Question From lloyddross on Chrylser 3.5l wont rev over 2500

I have a 2004 Chrysler Concorde LXI with 70000 miles. It has a 3.5 litre V6 engine which will not rev over 2500 RPMs and the check engine light is on. This started when I was driving using the cruise control and hit the Accel button to increase speed. It seems like it is governing itself to the 2500 rpm mark. Any ideas?

Response From lloyddross Top Rated Answer

Codes are P300 and P0016. Suggested repairs are timing belt, new spark plugs, new water pump and a flush and fill. Total $1200. I presume flush and fill would be change of coolant when replacing water pump. Don't have the car in front of me but most water pumps fail by leaking and is unrelated to timing, plugs etc. Unless that engine has an electric drive water pump? Any further ideas.

Response From Hammer Time

Don't have the car in front of me but most water pumps fail by leaking and is unrelated to timing, plugs etc

The water pump is driven by the timing belt so common sense would be to change it at the same time. If the water pump fails at a later date, not only will you have to do the job all over but serious engine damage could occur if it causes the timing belt to come off.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

I thought that's how that engine is set up. New water pump would be suggested and I would in this engine as Hammer said you are back to square ONE if it failed or worse!

T

Response From lloyddross

Thanks, fellows. Replaced the timing belt and the water pump while they were in there. Seems like they thought the plugs should be replaced solely on age of car and mileage and the fact they were the original plugs. Anyway, it seems to be running fine. LLoyd

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Sounds like responsible work Lloyd. Enjoy not worrying about it for a while.

I'll close thread as fixed/done, keeps spammers out and you may ask any moderator to reopen it at your request,

T

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Random misfires w cam and crank sensors out of sync would likely be a neglected or plain failed timing belt which I believe also runs the water pump in this engine so it would be suggested. If jumped a tooth you are on borrowed time and have been!

Many engines either can't (if all timing info is off) go over a certain RPM or default to a limp mode limiting RPMs.

FYI - water pumps can fail in a few different ways not just leak. It wouldn't be advised not to change coolant and plugs, probably oil and some other things possible. Pricing is local by your exact shop and area so can't say that's out of line at all. For some it will save your engine if not done!

I wouldn't wait with this and running it anymore is AYOR,

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Get the code(s) read first and post the #s and let's go from there,

1995 chrysler concord 3.5 wont start

Question From travelingannie on 1995 chrysler concord 3.5 wont start

Okay, so start to end here. the car was running and as I was turning into the parking lot it died. I was able to start it up and pulled into a parking spot. ran into store did my errand. came out started car up and as I was backing up it stalled out again. started it up, tried backing up and stalled out again. made third attempt but this time as I was turning key over I got a 'puff' sound like a hose came off.
So we have checked the battery - good. spark plugs - good. coil packet - replaced as of today. timing belt - good.
turn key over and you get what appears as its trying to turn over - just not firing up. I've done this several times (to make an attempt) and I have gotten the 'puff' sound again as well. I have noticed some slight smoke when hood has been up and someone else turning key over come from near where the timing belt area is and around the back of the engine. but really hard to see just where the actual spot its coming from. THe air intake hose has popped off in this process. which to me can be the source of the 'puff' sound - or so one would think.
My step father who has been helping me in this process of trying to get to the source of the problem seems to think that the timing is off??? I am just a gal here who is trying to get to the source of the issue so that I can get back into my own car and able to get to work without having to depend on someone else.
We have a chilton manual and have been trying to go through it as much as we can. Anyone who can give up some ideas of where else we should be looking would be appreciated.

Response From Loren Champlain Sr Top Rated Answer

annie; From the description, it sounds like it may be 'backfiring' through the intake. This could be from an over-fueling condition or an ignition problem. Or, as dad suggested, timing. You are going to need to see if it is getting spark during the whole time the ignition is turned. If you get just a spark when you let off of the key, that points to an ignition control module problem. If you get spark the whole time you are cranking, check the plugs to see if they are wet with fuel. If they are, that opens up a pandora's box of possibilities. These are a timing belt driven engine. It's very possible that it has 'jumped' a tooth or two. Or three. Many times, a belt will jump when you turn off the engine. Was running fine, before, but go to start, and whammo. So many possiblilities, just gonna need some more diagnosing. Sorry, no quick answer.

Response From Guest

We will check this...never thought I would end up learning so much about cars at this point in my life.lol

Response From Guest

You want to see what you are missing before throwing parts at it. Check for spark & fuel.

From what you describe it sounds like the fuel pump quit working. Just that it started & died a few time & each time ran worse....

If it is a fuel prob....don't just throw a pump at it.... Verify power & ground 1st.......

Response From Guest

thanks I will have this checked. it was one of the guesses from the get go!

Rattling Noise& Dies at in Idle

Question From NoviceCarJunky on Rattling Noise& Dies at in Idle

I recently purchased a 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix GT 3.8L with about 91k miles and I decided to test the performance of the engine, which I did. After that I reached a stop light and then the car died, So I took out the keys then put them back in the ignition and turned the car but it struggled to start and after I began to accelerate once I had re-started the car but it made a rattling noise and once again died on me once i reached a stop sign. It runs well for a couple minutes however once the engine reaches higher temperatures it rattles and dies once i stop the car.

I would very much appreciate it if anyone can please help me understand what may be causing the rattling and dying at stops. Also if a cause is found I would be thankful for a cost range for repairs thank you very much.

Response From Urbankid Top Rated Answer

This is the exact same thing that is happening to me. Same story exactly but I have the Chrysler Concorde LXI 2003. The knocking fades but not completely gone at higher rpms and gears, if idled it dies in a second or two. Over heats quickly... I've been told to check the fuel to make sure its not dirty, the spark plugs, build up on the cylinders, and no back up in the fuel lines. I have a gut feeling when I over heated I blew the head gasket... It would cause the no pressure mentioned earlier, causing the knock and the over heating. I hope its cheap like the spark plugs or just buy something to put in the gas take to help burn some bad fuel. But If I find out before you ill let you know!

Response From Hammer Time

Urbankid, Please read the FORUM RULES before posting.

This thread is nearly a year old.

Response From Discretesignals

Use a fuel pressure test gauge and see what the fuel rail pressure is when the engine is stalling out.

Response From NoviceCarJunky

I dont have access to a shop now but I will definitely check it out and i"ll get back to you on that. Thank You

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Do test as DS just suggested. Mostly I think the noise and stalling at the same time is probably just VERY low RPM right before it quits but might be an accessory on the belt system dragging/binding more than it can compensate for. Just a thought. If very cold where you are A/C compressor should be off even when it normally would be on if using defog/defrost momentarily. If much colder than say 20F it really should stay off no matter what. Try just shutting it down entirely as a test or take belt of for a binding accessory?

T

Response From Discretesignals

Those engines will spark knock as they are stalling out if fuel pressure dies off too.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

DS - I haven't known of many engines that don't slowly (seems the case here) die out and make some odd noises. Spark knock would certainly be one of them as you know this one does that.

I just think cold right now as it quickly shot from the 50s daytime to a cold snow and was just slightly below zero last night here. Nothing real new but I'm forever amazed that any vehicle can take such quick extremes and behave -- Tom

Response From NoviceCarJunky

Thanks both of you i will be sure to check it out soon after my classes. But i was wondering is it unusual for an engine to make rattling noises while accelerating?, on top of the dying at in idle?

Response From Tom Greenleaf

"Rattling while accelerating" -- bet it's unrelated to it dying out on you but that could be an exhaust heat shield not really anything to do with how it runs if so. Gotta go hunting around for that one. Engine off just tap on tailpipe with a rubber hammer or better yet check them all if loose or spot welds coming apart. Common but a zillion things can make noises,
