Turn Signal Switch 2002 Kia Spectra

Question From riguy02889 on Turn Signal Switch 2002 Kia Spectra

I'm trying to install a turn signal switch on a 2002 Kia Spectra GS 4 cyl. over 100,000 miles. No cruise control and has intermittent wipers.

What I'd like to know that when trying to install the turn signal switch does the Air Bag have to be disengaged and the top of the Steering wheel get taken off.

Response From Double J Top Rated Answer

Yes
Air Bag and Steering Wheel need to be removed

Disconnect the Negative Battery Cable first and wait 10 minutes for the battery back up power to discharge before removing
the Air Bag
I would recommend taking it to a qualified Mechanic if you do not have any experience with Air bags

99' cavalier lower brake lights out,but top one works

Question From Guest on 99' cavalier lower brake lights out,but top one works

My third brake light works but the lower pair do not. The lower pair are also blinkers which work. I replaced the bulbs & the brake pedal switch to no avail. Please give me an idea of what to try next and/or a wiring diagram.

Response From Chase.s.bates

Thanks a million for this post!!! I was truely puzzled by this exact issue in the 99 cav I was working on. I would have never thought to try this. Thank god for you DIYers. You just saved me a buttload of time and undoubtedly money!

Response From Guest

You have probably already solved the problem, but I have a 2000 sunfire and the same thing just happened to my car. It was the hazard light switch, the hazard lights turn on by sliding it right and off by sliding it left. If I push it forward just a little bit when they are off my brake lights work. It you didn't fix it yet, give this a try.

Response From Guest

Excellent! Have been working on this for about a week. Same problem, did what you said and pushed forward on the hazard light switch, pushed the brakes, and BINGO! You just saved me at least a hundred bucks. Now all I have to do is replace the module.!! : )

Response From Guest

I am really glad I found you guys. My '98 Cavalier had the same problem and the local dealer said the diagnostics and repair started at $300.00. I flipped the hazard switch back and forth several times and "BINGO" I had brake lights again. After I was done I remembered low-voltage switch contacts will become tarnished/dirty with inactivity. Mutliple switching actions can brighten the contacts and make the switch work again. Thank God for DIYers. If it happens again I will know what part to buy and replace.

Response From DanD Top Rated Answer

The lower brake lights are wired through the turn signal switch and with you saying that the high mount brake light and the turn signals work I suspect the turn signal switch is the problem.
That’s where they split the connection between the signals and brake lights so that with the brakes and signals both turned on; one will flash and the other will be on steady.
Go to the last connection in the wiring harness before or at the turn signal switch. You should find a white wire there; it should have power to it with the brake switch activated. If you do and the connection between the harness and switch is good replace the turn signal switch.
If not trace the white wire back until you find out where you’ve lost power.
There is a splice in this white wire before the turn signal switch where the wire splits and goes in three directions. One to the turn signal, another to the high mount brake light and the third to the ABS module. This splice is suppose to be in the “dash harness behind the left side of dash”
Keep it fun.
Dan.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Wild guess: Bad ground that can't handle the brake lights but can handle directionals. Hard to find and I would test adding ground and see, T

1996 z71 brake lights

Question From wynnpr on 1996 z71 brake lights

i have a 1996 chevy z71 the brake lights are not working. fuses are good and i believe the switch and relay is good because i can hear the relay click when the brake is pushed. i am not sure where the signal goes from the relay but hazards and blinkers work and they run on the same wire to the lights so if anyone has any advice please help

Response From Tom Greenleaf

For a test unplug the brake light switch. If it changes symptoms I'd bet that's it, T

Response From wynnpr

where exactly is the switch i think its near the stearing bracket but cant find it i have taken apart the dash and disabled the air bag. it seems to be out of sight and reach.

Response From DanD Top Rated Answer

With you hearing a relay clicking when you apply the brake pedal the stop light switch is likely ok; this is assuming that it’s the brake light relay that is doing the clicking.
All brake lights go through the turn signal switch (other then the high mount). So if the high mount brake light is working and the turn signals are working; the next place to test would be the turn signal switch. The internal connection for the brake lights in the turn signal switch may have gone bad.
I’m not saying this is it for sure but I’ve had to change a lot of signal switches for this problem. It’s a fairly complicated wiring system so I suggest taking the vehicle in and let someone diagnose it for you. The switch is not cheap to be replacing it on a guess.
Dan.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Slow down friend!! A brake light switch is generally right at the base of the metal of the brake pedal. It may look different than a door jam light switch but not all that hard to get at and check or replace, T

94 Ford Topaz Electrical Issue in Steering Column area

Question From daledo on 94 Ford Topaz Electrical Issue in Steering Column area

I replaced a my turn signal switch component. Tested it. Put everything back together. When I went to start the car( a 1994 Ford Topaz) all interior lights went out. After a while something seems to reset and the interior and dash lights come back on. I can put the car in the On position without the power dying but if i try to start the car all the dash interior lights go out. Anyone have any ideas?

Response From daledo Top Rated Answer

The problem was completely unrelated to my replacing the turn signal switch. Corroded positive terminal. Unlucky coincidence right?

@Tom You are correct and thanks for the response.

@Discrete I replaced the turn signal switch because it no longer worked(nearly at all).

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Glad it's fixed. Sometimes a WAG (wild arse guess) from your symptoms is the reason even if you never touched it - go figure?

T

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Not the issue but thought "Topaz" was Mercury nameplate not Ford (same idea) but what would allow lighting, dash lights that all go out when you turn key for "start" is a battery cable connection at battery or anywhere the main cables go both positive and ground.

If you disconnected battery (best to ground cable off first, back on last if so) to do this work go check just what you did to disable power while working on it,

T

Response From Discretesignals

Why did you replace the turn signal switch?

Do the dash light come on and go off by themselves when you have the headlamp switch turned on?
