blinker lights stopped working mitsubishi mirage 2001

Question From dtice on blinker lights stopped working mitsubishi mirage 2001

STATS: Automatic, 97,000 miles

On my mitsubishi mirage 2001, the blinkers stopped working entirely. The back lights, and the dash light also went out. But I took it in and had the fuses changed.

This fixed the dash light and the back light, but the blinker lights are still not working.

Any ideas or is this a mysterious electrical problem?

Response From Sidom

If you've just had your car into a shop for diagnose & repair, you could call them and ask about your turn signals.

There is a turn signal/hazard unit under the left side of the dash you could check.

Does your hazard lights work?

Response From dtice

Yeah, strangely, the hazard lights work entirely . How do I get into the dash?
Could it be the flasher relay?

Response From Sidom Top Rated Answer

If your hazards are working, more than likely the relay is ok. I believe on that system its an electronic relay that controls both the turn signals & hazards.

The best way would be to get a wiring diagram and check power going into & coming out of the combination switch (turn signal switch on the column). Although not impossible, I haven't seen too many of these electronic units go bad, most of the time it's in the combination switch (on the few moving parts in the system)

Unfortunately I can't post anything out of my data base but if you need a diagram of the system, maybe one of the other guys can hook you up when they see this.......

Response From dtice

Could a faulty relay affect the blinkers, but not the hazard lights?

"The best way would be to get a wiring diagram and check power going into & coming out of the combination switch (turn signal switch on the column)."

Is this something a relative layman could do? Or should I get an electrician to take a look?

Thanks for the advice!

Response From Sidom

That's not likely although nothing is impossible, you could price one and get the parts store to show you the location in their data base and then make the decision on the price to whether it's worth the gamble if it doesn't work

Is this something a relative layman could do? Or should I get an electrician to take a look? If you aren't familiar with automotive electrical and column disassembly then it may be better to take it into a shop to have it diag'd & repaired

Thanks for the advice! You're welcome, good luck & happy turkey day

I'll probably bring it into a shop. Thanks for helping me rule out the possibilities. It's nice to have some background on it before I entrust a shop!

Happy Turkey day to you too! :-)

brake lights

Question From ljpark on brake lights

Mitsubishi Galant 2003
Today the brake lights quit (ok so we noticed it today) but all other lights are working including the brake light in the back window. So what could be causing the problem? The fuses appear to be good.

Response From Hammer Time Top Rated Answer

If the 3rd "high mount" brake light is working properly, that would mean that your problem is in the turn signal switch. The 2 lower lights "only" pass through that switch so the turn signal can cancel the brake lights when necessary.

Response From ljpark

would the turn signals still work then? My husband seems to think it has to be something with the wiring in the trunk area.

Response From Hammer Time

OK, why ask us then?
Let us know when he gets it fixed.

Question From kgansert on 91 montero, brake light problems

I have a1991 mitsubishi montero, 3.0 v6, manual 4wd, i have checked the fuse in the fuse panel, checked all the bulbs and replaced the stop light/ brake switch and nothing. I have running lights and turn signals but no brake lights, ive even taken my tester and checked for power going into the brake switch and power coming out when brake is deployed but still no lights! Any suggestions

Response From Hammer Time Top Rated Answer

Probably a bad turn signal switch.

Response From kgansert

fuse for running lights keep blowing

Question From Tiffany91 on fuse for running lights keep blowing

My night time running lights haven't worked for a year and I'm tired of paying mechanics $85/hr to not fix the problem..

I have a 97 mitsubishi mirage DE coupe. for some reason my night time lights and dashboard lights randomly quit working at the same time. put all new fuses (in both fuse boxes) nothing happened. put a new turn signal switch in it, nothing. recently I put a 15 amp fuse in it (requires a 10amp) . it worked for a couple days and then blew. put a 20amp in and blew instantly. So I am pretty sure it has to be a wire that is touching causing my fuses to blow but all the idiot mechanics around me are just too lazy to test wires.. Anyone know what wire it could possibly be? like which part of the car I should look at first instead of having to take all the paneling off .

Response From Hammer Time

You have a short in the circuit somewhere and you have to have it tracked down.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Tiffany91: DO NOT PUT A HIGHER AMP FUSE IN ANYTHING, EVER LIKE THAT!

Yes it indicates a short and blowing a fuse is what it is supposed to do instead of burning up the car! Find that short if only to take the bulbs out and look into sockets for a problem,

T

Response From Discretesignals Top Rated Answer

Has there been any modifications done to the lighting system or any aftermarket equipment installed? Maybe someone did an aftermarket radio install and has the illumination circuit shorted. Most shorts occur because someone had been messing with the wiring or adding stuff and that is usually the first places you look.

Response From Tiffany91

Yes someone put blue lights under front bumper. I cut all those wires..

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Ah Ha! That's your place to go looking if those were to come on with running lights especially. Look for where they were connected and by what or look at where you cut them as an exposed end of powered wire sure would blow fuses,

T

Response From Tiffany91

They were cut after the fuse blew...

Response From Tom Greenleaf

That's the are that Discretesignals mentioned about alterations etc., as a place to look for trouble. Whatever was done to power the things you cut the wire to was probably just pinched into an existing wire with junk items, perhaps just electrical tape and can short there unless that is totally sealed up, wire tapped into soldered and shrink wrapping over the damaged wire it will not tolerate exterior condition well or for long. Maybe not the problem but it would be the first place I'd look,

T

Response From Tiffany91

K will do. Thanks everyone

Response From Tiffany91

So which wires do you think i should start out testing? like if the short is near the rear of my car will it show if i test the same wire behind the firewall? that way i dont have to take paneling off , I can just test up there and track it to the back of my car if necessary....? and thanks for reply
