Question From samg. on 00' tacoma lower ball joints
Sorry to ask but GM tech working on toyota here!
A buddy of mine wants his lower ball joints and f shocks replaced, ive put them in on yukons, sierras so on but never a toyota. They look like they come bolted in from the factory so is it just a simple as poppin the tie rod end and joint out of knuckle then unbolting and beating that mother til it comes out?
I would assume if they bolt in no press will be needed?
Response From Discretesignals
Yep, disconnect the outer tie rod from the knuckle. Loosen the four nuts and remove the castle nut. Hammer shock or use a ball joint shafter remover ( gear puller) to pop the shaft out of the lower control arm. Take the four bolts out and lift up on the knuckle and upper control arm and remove the joint.
You don't have to remove the CV or disassemble the brakes. 4 bolts get tightened to 59 ft/lbs and the castle nut to 103 ft/lbs. If the hole doesn't line up for the cotter pin, tighten the nut a little more to line up the hole. Tie rod nut gets 67 ft/lbs.
You'll need a strut compressor to R and R the shock in the front. Removing the shock assembly is pretty self explanatory and will be easier to do with lower ball joint removed. Make sure you mark everything before taking the shock/spring assembly apart.
The large shock nut and bolt get 101 ft/lbs. The three upper mount nuts get 47 ft/lbs and the shock top nut get 22 ft/lbs.
You'll find that working on Toyota is really easy and everything fits really nice and is well designed.

Question From ev66 on are leaky shock absorbers worth repairing ?
Hi, both rear shocks on my Toyota Carina have fluid leaks. Can I, and is it worth attempting to repair them, or should I just buy new ones.
Thanks, Evan.

Question From idowu on my toyota camry 2001 drags
my toyota camry 2001 drags, no matter how hard i press the throttle pedal the rpm does not go above 2x1000rpm in drive mode(while driving) but rev well in idle(park mode) though the rpm is usually about 0.3x1000rpm, it consume fuel alot(about 1Lto 2km),emits black smoke. I have clean the airflow meter, air filter and change the fuel pump but the problem still persist.
Response From Discretesignals
Which engine? Check engine light on? If so, what trouble code(s) number(s) is stored.
Was there any recent repair work done prior to the problem your having?
Response From idowu☆☆☆☆☆Top Rated Answer
v6 engine,
the engine light is not on
just replace rear shock absorber, changedATF and engine oil
Response From Discretesignals
1MZ-FE is not really known for exhaust restrictions, but it is possible if you drive around with misfires occurring or the fuel trim isn't being properly controlled. You could check exhaust back pressure with a gauge to see if you have excessive exhaust back pressure.
Could have a weak ignition system component(s) that shows up when the engine is under load. Misfiring will usually cause the check engine light to illuminate and the ECU to store misfire code(s). There are various testing procedures that can be used to test the integrity of the system, but special tools may be needed.
Could have a valve timing issue. You would need to confirm that by using a DSO to look at cam and crank sensor signals and how they correlate against a known good waveform or use a pressure transducer in each bank to determine if cam timing is correct. You could also pull the covers off and do a visual inspection of the timing belt and sprockets.
The fuel could be contaminated. You could have the fuel tested by a lab or you could drain the fuel and put known good fresh fuel back in.
Those are some possibilities to eliminate.

Question From JohnMac on Need advice on tow, suspension cracked
Just a couple quick questions for you guys. Two mounts rusted on my driver side rear shock and the third is cracked. The shock spring is resting on the tire (doesn't seem like its a lot of weight) but I was able to turn it around and get up the driveway. Got a long driveway, will the flatbed crack my concrete on driveway( only 2 3/4 " thick in some places)? Should I chance driving it down driveway?
I was wondering if I should make sure the shop is open when I get it towed there? Would like to get it there asap but thinking may be best for someone to be there to receive it at the shop. Greatly appreciated

Response From Discretesignals
Not really sure what your up against. When the flatbed comes to pick up the vehicle, see what the driver has to say. He/she should be able to figure out a safe way to get it out of there without tearing anything up....hopefully.
Response From JohnMac☆☆☆☆☆Top Rated Answer
Alright thanks for the advice
Response From Tom Greenleaf
Wow! Known 3/4" concrete! Surprised that dropping a medium rock doesn't crack it all up. Think about lots here. Maybe tow driver if this is known will put it on a dolly or something? If serious enough line up decent plywood - just saw that over a yard with a monster crane taking out huge trees (other story same issues) and didn't damage anything,

Wow! Known 3/4" concrete!
He said 2 and 3/4 Tom.
Response From Tom Greenleaf
That's better - was showing on two lines. Still substandard IMO for concrete - no clue how this person knows? I purposely asked for 8 inches for one new area now old. Not a good outdoor product in cold climates so almost none used here for driveways. Can be wildly expensive to fix was my concern, not so much the car!
T
Response From Hammer Time
You probably should redirect the tow truck to the scrap yard. That sounds terminal.

Question From Guest on struts on 2003 Toyota Highlander 4 WD Limited
I was just told by a tire dealer that a strut on my Highlander was "leaking." I have experienced no symptoms of strut dysfunction.
If true, is this expected "wear and tear?" Should I take it to a dealer for inspection?
Response From Tom Greenleaf☆☆☆☆☆Top Rated Answer
Is this just some oil staining on the strut? Struts are a shock dampening item, part of suspension and may need replacement along the life of a vehicle. It should be known that it's safe and that any oil staining is in fact from the strut itself. An alignment or front end shop should be able to determine the need to replace it now or if you can wait. I can't from here. Best to replace these in pairs if needed,
T
Response From Jeff Norfolk
The thing about a shock or strut wearing out is they wear out gradually. Most drivers won't notice much of a performance diffrence until there is noise or serious tire wear. Most stuts are good for 80-100 thousand miles. Before then replacement typically on a as needed basis due to damage or fluid leakage. If you are over 100 thousand miles you will likely feel a diffrence when you do have them replaced. Like Tom said, totally safe to drive even if the stuts are worn or leaking a bit of fluid.
Response From Guest
Last Friday, I had new tires put on my 2003 Toyota Highlander at the dealer. Five days later, I noticed a fluid leak - hydraulic fluid, I believe. I took it back to the dealer and was told I needed new rear struts. I drive my car gently, and it only had 44K miles on it. I am suspicious that it is not a coincidence that a fluid leak and strut problem developed days after the tire installation. I'm also suspicious of the $900+ repair cost. Are my suspicions unfounded?

Where are you noticing this fluid leak? It matters. Strut may be the leak and really shouldn't drip to ground if so.
Low easy miles or not it could happen. Unscrupulous folks could spray oil to make a scare but I have better faith in folks than that type crap. If that was the case it would clean off and not return and fell fine when driving??

It did feel fine while driving. The fluid leak was near the right back tire. My husband slid underneath the car and said it looked like something had sprayed out, freshly. I hadn't at that point been to the dealer for 5 days, so I'm pretty sure nothing was sprayed on, and that the spray was a result of some sort of leak. Given the age/low mileage of the vehicle, and the speed with which this problem followed on the heels of new tire installation, I was wondering if there was a cause and effect there.

You really need to know what sprayed out and from where - for safety sake.
Is the liquid water soluable? Things that might be back there include:
A rear heater?? Antifreeze and washes off with plain water)
Brake fluid (washes off with plain water)
Strut oils would likely be an oil product
Gear oil from axle parts
Does this have a rear wiper/washer? Could be that too.

Most parts that could leak a fluid are out of harms way from a moving wheel/tire and just in hoisting somthing might have been touched - you need to know what it is/was no matter what.
It's possible a strut just couldn't take it and showed up right then from just being hoisted. It shouldn't of course but unless you can find something done on purpose (unlikely IMHO) it probably can just be chauked up to bad luck,

I was told by the dealer that the fluid wasn't brake fluid, but a "hydraulic" fluid. Before the trip to the dealer, though, the brake fluid was low.
My last car was a Honda Accord. I had it 13 years, 95K miles, and kept up with routine maintenance. It never needed a major repair job. It it looked great when I sold it because the A/C system needed a complete replacement.
Love driving my Highlander, but I won't be buying another one if it keeps costing me big $.

Hammer just made a great point - could be that the easy use this has had, has never had struts at their extremes and seals got crusty there and just gave out from hoisting it. There realy is no blame for something like that - stuff happens.
New rear struts will vary in costs. Check you own parts outlets for the various grades if they are in fact the trouble. Best in pairs and it does mean it will need an alignment. If you aren't happy with a dealer that as some independant shops.
Dealers aren't automatically the best shops or not - it's still a one by one thing and the people you are dealing with,

Not trying to defend anyone here but the coincidence you refer to could actually have been triggered by lifting the truck off the ground which would have fully extended the struts into a position they don't normally ride in and sometimes that will push the seals through some bad portions of the pistons and tear them which will trigger the leak. As the other person stated, the struts gradually lose their ability to control suspension movement over time and replacing them will definitely benefit your new tire investment. Most of the aftermarket replacements are actually higher quality that the OEM units anyway.
