  • Black MAX twin tube shock absorbers have increased fluid capacity and utilize foam-cell technology. When the shock is working hard and gets hot, the foam-cell insert compresses to compensate for oil expansion which maintains consistent MAX performance throughout the operating temperature range of the shock. The foam-cell design also eliminates air inside the shock which allows for mounting in any direction. Arc-welded end mounts and select specific valving give this shock absorber MAX value.

Question From 43car on Honda Civic crank no start

Hey I could sure use some advice. I have a 97 Honda Civic 1.6l sohc that cranks but won't start. I have spark, fuel(40 psi) and good compression(150 in all cylinderss) There are no codes in the computer. It try's to start but will not fire up. Can you give me any advice on what to check before I have it towed to a mechanic? PS just replaced all plugs & wires, new cap & rotor......

Response From GC

Did it run before you put those parts on or were they installed attempting to fix the problem? It tries to start but wont fire up, does that mean that it fires but stalls? How did you check for spark?

Response From 43car

Yes it ran before. Had some misfire issue briefly. I have a spark tester. Checked all 4 cylinders. Doesn't ever start but acts like it wants to but won't.

Response From Hammer Time

Are the new plugs getting wet with fuel r are they remaining clean and dry?

Response From 43car

For the most part they look clean and dry, the plug in cylinder one had a black residue built up on it

Response From Hammer Time

If they are clean and dry, that leaves you with lack of fuel. Use a noid light and test for injector pulse while cranking.

Response From 43car

I did the noid light test and all the injectors were pulsing normally

Response From Hammer Time

Something is wrong with your testing because 2&2 does not add up to 5. If everything you told me is true, the engine would be running.

I think it's time to start over from scratch.

All "crank, no start" conditions are approached in the same way. Every engine requires certain functions to be able to run. Some of these functions rely on specific components to work and some components are part of more than one function so it is important to see the whole picture to be able to conclude anything about what may have failed. Also, these functions can ONLY be tested during the failure. Any other time and they will simply test good because the problem isn't present at the moment.
If you approach this in any other way, you are merely guessing and that only serves to replace unnecessary parts and wastes money.

Every engine requires spark, fuel and compression to run. That's what we have to look for.

These are the basics that need to be tested and will give us the info required to isolate a cause.

1) Test for spark at the plug end of the wire using a spark tester. If none found, check for power supply on the + terminal of the coil with the key on.

2) Test for injector pulse using a small bulb called a noid light. If none found, check for power supply at one side of the injector with the key on.

3) Use a fuel pressure gauge to test for correct fuel pressure, also noticing if the pressure holds when key is shut off.

4) If all of these things check good, then you would need to do a complete compression test.

Response From 43car

I have done all of that already and it all checks out. If you don't have any other suggestions I may just have to give in and take to a shop

Response From Discretesignals

Have you checked to see if the exhaust is plugged up? Maybe it might idle with the front O2 sensor out if that is the case.

Response From 43car

Pulled off the O2 sensor of course it still won't run. I may be in over my head on this one. Even though it passes all normal tests it doesn't want to run.....I appreciate your time, and I'll check back if anyone can tell me anything else to look for. Thanks for the help. I'll post on here when i know what the problem was too.

Response From Discretesignals

If you spray carb cleaner into the intake, does the engine run and die?

Response From 43car

No tried it with starting fluid to see if I had a bad fuel pump.

Response From Discretesignals

If you have a strong spark, it may not be occurring at the right time. Even though you have good compression numbers, the valve timing may be off enough to make it not start. Has anyone done timing belt repairs lately?

Another thing to look at is to make sure the rotor in the distributor isn't loose or moving around on the shaft.

edit:

Even though this video is of a different year engine and ignition system, the procedures are pretty much the same. If you have time to watch this video, it may give you some direction or hints:

Response From 43car

Thanks that was very informative. There has been no work done on the car other then the tune up. It belongs to my son and he's had for a few months. It's a beater and it has high mileage. Like 200 k plus. I'm just a backyard mechanic and I was trying to impart a little knowledge to my son. We've learned a lot thanks to you guys at carjunky.com and I'm grateful for the help. Just this time it's beyond our abilities. Anyway thanks again and I'm calling for a hook in the morning.

Response From Discretesignals

No problem. We are constantly learning ourselves. Let us know how things turn out, so we can resolve this thread.

Response From 43car

FYI problem solved, it was a clogged fuel filter and defective fuel pump. Thanks again!

Response From Hammer Time

I guess you never did the fuel pressure test that was advised on one of the first posts.

I have done all of that already and it all checks out.

Response From Discretesignals

I wonder why it didn't run on spray? It is important to make those checks listed or else you'll get sent on a wild goose chase. Good to read you got it figured out. Closed as solved. Can be reopened upon request by the OP.

Response From Hammer Time Top Rated Answer

I'm pretty shocked that he used a test light on the injector drivers without qualifying what type.

Response From Discretesignals

Injector draws a lot more current than that test light he is using.

Response From Hammer Time

I'm aware of that but he never said LED is OK, he just said a test light is OK which some are not LED.

Response From Discretesignals

LED would be just fine. The problem with LED test lamps is that you can't use them to do bypass testing or to energize relays because they don't use enough current.

My test lamp incadescent at work uses around 200mA. I remember measuring the current of a NOID light, but don't remember what is was.

I think he is safe, but when in doubt either measure the amount of current that is running on the circuit, if it is operational, or use a LED lamp. Would be a good idea to measure the flow on your test lamp to be sure you know how much it is using also.

Injector peak current flow is around 800-900 mA on a 2000 Honda Civic 1.6L

Response From Hammer Time

I have done all of that already and it all checks out.

As I already said, that cannot be true or the car would be running. It's possible to have an over rich mixture or plugged exhaust but when you said the plugs were clean and dry, you pretty much eliminated that.

Question From Car Wreck 2 on 90 Honda Accord DX Stopped running

90 Honda accord DX 2.0 4cyl engine. Was just pulling out of a parking space, and there was a pop noise, and the car went dead. We can crank the engine, but engine won't start.

We have replaced the ignitor, checked the coil. The power box gives a code of 1long and 5 short flashes. We checked the wires leading to the power box and found one bad wire. how do we by pass this wire without causing a problem? Please give us any ideas that you can think of.
Thanks!!!!

Response From Discretesignals

Power box? Do you mean the engine computer?

What color is the wire? What do you mean it is bad?

Response From Car Wreck 2

Yes, I am talking about the the computer box on the passenger side under the dash. We took resistance ohm tests on the wires and found the yellow wire with a green stripe to not have a signal all the way to the computer box. Does the yellow green wire that connects to the ignitor, stay that color all the way to the computer box? We found a red/green wire at the computer box where we think the connection should be.

I also have replaced the main relay under the driver side dash.

Response From Discretesignals

Response From Car Wreck 2

Thanks for the wiring diagram. So according to this diagram the yellow green wire will be at #11 and at #24. We are just not getting any power to the coil. We think the ignitor isn't getting the signal from the ECU to make the coil spark. How can we test this?

Response From Discretesignals

Before you go all out testing the IC circuit. Did you make sure the rotor in the distributor rotates when you crank the engine?

Response From Car Wreck 2 Top Rated Answer

Not sure if it was rotating. If it doesn't turn, what do I look for?

Response From Discretesignals

Broken timing belt

Response From Car Wreck 2

if the rotor does turn, then what do I look for?

Response From Discretesignals

Cross that bridge when we come to it.

Response From Car Wreck 2

found the crankshaft pully was loose and the key had broken off. we fixed that and all was well. thanks so much for your guidance.

Response From Discretesignals

Glad to read you got it figured out. Thanks for the follow up. Locked to prevent hijacking and spammering.

93 Honda Civic DX: Headlights Fuse Number?

Showing 3 out of 3 Posts
Question From HopeSprings on 93 Honda Civic DX: Headlights Fuse Number?

Hi

1) Both headlights are out on my 1993 Honda Civic DX (4 cylinder). Fog lights and dash board lights
are working, however. Where can I find the correct fuse slot?
The manual says to look on the box cover. But that is missing.
What fuse number do I need?

2) Really, I need to know what fuse strength I need (15? 20?...) and then
which slot does it go into? There are several empty ones (I assume for
options not ordered) and none of the ones I have checked, so far, are blown.

3) Also, until I can get to the auto store, which fuse can I temporarily take out to
use in the correct slot for the headlights (Tomorrow is Sunday and many
stores in my town are closed).

I have searched online for a page showing the fuse box chart/guide to no avail.

Thank you

Response From HopeSprings Top Rated Answer

How expensive would it be to fix my 2003 Honda, Accord EX 5 cd changer?

Question From culturevulture on How expensive would it be to fix my 2003 Honda, Accord EX 5 cd changer?

When I bought my Honda the dealer had to put a new cd player about two months after I drove the car home. It broke down again about three or four years ago. Would it be expensive to fix? Or should I just have a new one put in?....

Response From kenray

not knowing what the problem is, sometimes you can disconnect the changer overnight and plug it back in in the morning. this basically resets the microprocessor. kind of like rebooting a computer.

Response From Sidom

I can't say as to the exact amount but it can be expensvie depending on what's wrong, you should price a replacement unit just to have an idea and also factor in you're talking about a 4 year old deck that has had problems in the past.........

Response From Tom Greenleaf Top Rated Answer

Agree - price out a replacement - aftermarket that used and interface so as not to mess with cars wiring. I'm no stereo pro with cars but was warned the ones that hold more that one CD are more likely to fail, skip on bumps etc. If you are a fanatic do what you need to do. Local place had a decent Kenwood for $79! I was shocked, interface was like $45 install $50 saves the warranty. Not out of control great but pretty dang good!
