Question From kath_heaven on BMW P0783 fault
I have a 2004 BMW 330ci with 120,000km on it automatic. I have fault code P0783 and it keeps getting stuckk in gear. My mechanic said it is a selonid problem but the auto transmission place says it is the drum and the whole transmission needs rebuilding. Who is right? Thank you :)
Response From Discretesignals☆☆☆☆☆Top Rated Answer
Really don't know without some troubleshooting results. P0783 has to do with the shift solenoid (C) circuit having a power short. I really don't think an electrical circuit code would be setting because of a mechanical problem with the transmission, but I don't specialize in BMW transmissions. If it came into our shop we would test the electrical circuit for SS (C) for a power short using a meter/scope.
Did you ask the transmission shop why they want to overhaul the transmission for a shift solenoid electrical circuit problem? If so, what was the answer they gave you?
Response From kath_heaven
Thank you so much for your reply The transmission place said it needs a new transmission drum as that is what is causing it to stick and transmission overhaul because it would have all bits of metal in it. My warranty will only pay $750 towards it and I have to pay the other $2300!!! I am female and blonde!!!

Question From bhb1971 on can you convert air struts to standard.....
My father in law is working on a 1989 BMW 735i and the struts(shocks) are not working. We need to know if there is a way to convert the air struts to standard and if there are any other things we need to know about dealing with this issue.
Response From Discretesignals☆☆☆☆☆Top Rated Answer
There is a company that you might want to get hold of called Strutmasters.
I don't think that your shocks use air to level the rear. They used several different rear shock designs on those. It's important you identify which system you have. There were conventional, EDC (electronic damping control), and LAD (Load dependent absorption) shock systems. LAD uses hydraulic pressure supplied from a pump on the power steering pump to supply pressure to raise and lower the rear.

Question From Guest on Please help, i'm a car noob
I'm thinking about purchasing a 1999 BMW 528I
Engine size 2.8L I6
156,000 miles.
The guy states that it needs a new ABS pump.
My question is will i be able to drive it home without a new ABS pump installed?
I'm a car noob so i have no idea if its driveable or not with a faulty abs pump. But would love to learn.
Would there be any problems while driving with one?
Please let me know. Thank you
My email is rock0316@optonline.net
Response From Tom Greenleaf☆☆☆☆☆Top Rated Answer
Be warned - in general ABS electrical failures default to safe regular braking action and would be safe to drive. Not so sure about this ABS pump if that's so and strongly suggest you get a real quote at to what it will cost to repair that as you may be really shocked at how expensive this is likely to be. Know that up front as it may not be something you can just ignore,
T
Response From dmac0923
like Tom said, you will still have brakes, just wont be antilock
just a heads up, not only are ABS parts EXPENSIVE, but replacing the pump requires a special programmer to open and close solenoids to fully bleed the brake system.
i would call your local BMW service center and tell them your looking at buying a used bmw with the bad ABS pump and if they can give you a ball park on how much itll be to replace.
(make sure your sitting down when you do this )

Question From adamkrandle on How to negotiate for a car?
I am looking to buy a new car, maybe a BMW. I am not good atnegotiatingthe price face to face. Is it possible to negotiate a price using email only.
Thanks.
Response From RaymarkSen
It totally depends on what kind of personality u r.
Response From nbentley
I also hate face to face
The false charm of some sales staff is too much to take.
I'd prefer to do it by email
Response From IndiaDrives
FYI to the original poster, the dealer does not make an offer, the deal is the price of the car is MSRP.if the customer doesn't want to pay that price, it's up to the customer to make the offer no the dealer...
Response From re-tired
FYI This is the second old dead thread you have answered. Try to keep up.
Response From jamesd23
i think it is the same as making deals personally. i think you better try to visit sites that will surely help you to find great deals with great discounts.

Another way of buying without going face to face is to use a broker .You give him/her a wishlist of type car, color and options. And for a nominal fee he/she will search the entire region. The broker then brings you the papers to sign , you stroke a check and he/she hands you the keys. Do a google for a auto broker in your area.
Response From maxthedog
Hi, Adamkrandle:
It is possible to negotiate a new car deal via emails. Actually, that is my preferred way of buying a car. Let me share my experiences. When I was buying my new car last year, I first researched the car I was interested on edmunds. I also went to my local dealership and checked out the car in person. Once I decided on the exact model, color and options I want, and the price target I would bargain for (always based on the invoice price). I started to seek price quotes from car dealers. You can send email to car dealers directly. But very often they will not respond because they don't know if you are serious. The better way is to use some free "ask quote" services. The one I used is "Yahoo Auto". Here is the link to the site:
link deleted........not allowed
It sends requests to the area dealers you select (you select the area by entering the zip code). You don't need to limit it to your local area, ask quote from out of your area dealers by entering a different zip code. The more the quotes you get, the more your bargaining power is. Once you are getting all the quotes from emails or calls (you can ask the dealers who call you to email you the quotes, this way, you have time to consider and compare), you can start you negotiation now. In my case, the best quote was from a dealer 60 miles away from where I am living. In California, the sales tax is determined by where you live, not where you buy. So it really doesn't matter where I buy. But I wanted to buy the car from my local dealer because it is easier to pick up, and I'd like to keep my business local. So I used that best quote to negotiate with my local dealer using emails. You know what happened, they offered to beat that price eventually. Let dealers compete for your business. Never accept their first offer. They will say the car is in short supply. You know what, there is not enough people buying the cars. It is a buyer's market. So be patient and persistent. This way, you will get the car you want at the price you love!
Happy car buying!
Response From Tom Greenleaf☆☆☆☆☆Top Rated Answer
I don't see why you can't negotiate via email. You said "New." Some new cars don't have a ton of margin to play with, used cars do at dealer's but they need it as they cover any warranty usually mandated.
1. Start with saying what's the best you can do if I do this today which catches attention. Call another dealer for the same car and say you've been offered this, can you do better! Shocks sales people. Tell the place you want to deal with of the offer.
* Remember they are pros at this game and make a commission on the amount of the profit but also know if you go somewhere else they get nothing.
* Another approach I've used is to plain ask how much above absolute cost must you make! Renders them speechless but say you'll want proof.
** Hidden in most new car sales is a kick back by manufacturer of usually 2% or was once. Sales person doesn't get a cut of that so hard to touch that but if you catch them near a quota big dealers can afford to sell at a loss to get an extra percent.
*** Watch out for the garbage like Scotch Guarding, paint sealants, rustproofing etc., and if you want to extend a warranty do research on the holder of those and usually not worth it.
Don't be afraid to actually go there and walk out saying too much. Call later or they'll call you!
Check on-line if you can find the dealer's cost. They need some bucks or couldn't be in biz but will gladly get anything they can.
Go back and I know you don't want to but find out the date of manufacture usually on driver's door jam. We are ending a model year and the thing may be close to a year old but new and that's a negotiating point to me anyway.
Keep in mind any offer you make is the lowest price possible - same with them. As you approach where you want to be ask to split the difference and pic up the last few bucks.
The whole thing is nuts. Can you imagine going to a grocery store and at the check out negotiating? Car biz has done this forever.
Know in your mind where you really will make the deal and start low keeping the monkey on them and trust me they will try to put it on you if they know you are a real buyer.
Watch out for the last second add on costs so make it clear you want a finished price/offer all inclusive only - no tricks,
