Battery Light On

Question From Tig on Battery Light On

My Serpentine belt has come off twice after going through huge puddles of water. The belt did not break but had to be put back on. The most recent time being just a month ago. When I first start my car it seems like the belt has been making almost like a belt type noise on the right hand side of the car. I assumed it was my serpentine belt. After I drove it awhile the noise quit. It was not like a high piched belt noise you hear some cars make, more of a racket rumbling type noise. Now this morning I go to start the car and the noise is pretty loud, to me it looked like the Serpentine belt is on there fine from what I can see by opening the hood and since I know nothing about cars. After the car ran for a few min, then my battery light came on. I turned off the car and didnt go anyplace. Could a bad serpentine belt cause this, or do you think its unrelated. I checked the battery connections and they look good, not a lot of gunk or anything, maybe a little bit of white stuff. It was the coldest it has been here today, in the low 30 s. Any ideas on what I should do or what it might be. I dont want to drive it anyplace like this. Dodge Grand Caravan 2000 -So I just moved the car out onto the street, it now wont turn over, I hear the starter trying, the dome lights still come on. Thinking it has to be the battery or something that charges it, my alternator has not given me any signs, it went out once so I know what that is. The starter has not given me any troubles...Just not sure what it is...Any ideas....

Reading your original post sounds like it may be a bearing. Has anyone removed the belt and spun the pulleys by hand to check for bad bearings? If they turn poorly or make a rumbling noise that indicates a bearing is worn out.

Response From Hammer Time Top Rated Answer

There are 2 common reasons for this happening on that vehicle.

1) The belt ternsioner starts to wear internally and the pressure of the belt causes it to lean out slightly off center. This tilts the pulley and causes the belt to migrate off the side...... solution, replace tensioner and belt

2) Sometime the lower splash shield gets left off and hitting a water puddle knocks the belt off.

Response From way2old

Dayco makes a kit that includes a pulley that has sides on the pulley. This keeps the belts lined up and keeps them from being thrown off. We have installed a few and have had no problems. I think CarQuest sells them.

Steering problem

Question From Rwalton5 on Steering problem

2000 toyota tundra, 4.7L . Steering is very hard, as if pump is out. Replaced pump, serpentine belt , rack and pinion , ball joints, shocks. Someone told me it could be the air bag clock spring in the steering wheel as it makes an unusual clicking noise when turning left or right . And ideas? I'm desperate(and running out of $$$). Thanks

Response From Discretesignals Top Rated Answer

The clock spring should have nothing to do with the power steering system.

You really need a power steering pressure gauge to determine if you have a pump, rack, or line issue.

With the engine running the level in the reservoir should be lower than with the engine off. Some of those reservoirs have a screen inside that can become plugged up and stave the pump for fluid. If the screen is plugged up, that could mean a hose is coming apart internally.

Overheating issue

Question From polito353 on Overheating issue

Hello,
Last week my gf was driving her BMW 325 ci 2002 and seems like one of the serpentine belts broke. By the moment she stopped the car ( like 5 secs later ), there was some white steam coming out of the hood because some water was coming out of the radiator ( looks like the old owner put some glue in an old little hole and now, due to the heat, the water was splashing out of the radiator ). She said that after the mechanic took out 2 serpentine belts, she was asked to drive for 1/4 mile to a warehouse where they had more tools and stuff... She says the car had very little power. Until here everything sounds normal. But I have couple of Q:
1) Is it possible that in 4 days the battery lost all its power and is not providing enough power to turn on the engine.
2) Why does the computer say that 3 of the cylinders are misfiring but the car still turns on ( with a new battery ) ? ( alternator problem maybe? )

I know I have to replace the radiator, but I not clear about everything else. I am scared to move the car because the computer gives me an error that apparently does not exist ( car turns on ).

Thanks for the help in advance, I will update whatever happens.

Response From Hammer Time

You can't drive the vehicle without a belt because the belt operates the water pump and running it without a water pump can cause serious overheating and possible internal damage. This may have already happened if it's misfiring. The description of your repair shop makes this sound like they may be some inexperienced "wanna be" techs.

What the heck? Tell her to have the vehicle towed to a professional repair shop that is licensed and insured.

Response From polito353

She drove that 1/4 mile with only one serpentine belt, sorry I did not specify I am not very knowledgeable about cars.
Tnx

Response From Hammer Time Top Rated Answer

Not very knowledgeable about owning one either......................

So. let me get this straight. After driving it to this so called warehouse and us telling you that was a very bad idea, you then drove it home.

You apparently don't listen to warnings and you have no mechanical ability so I don't know what you expect to do.
There is a real good chance that you have done serious internal damage already so the only advice i have for you is to hae it towed to a reputable repair shop.

Response From polito353

You are not understanding... I know about owning BMW but I will not extend on that argument...

The car broke in point X, after that my gf drove 1/4 mile with one serpentine belt, the other one was already broken and taken out.
Obviously the guy so called mechanic could not solve anything and we TOWED to my house. Now the car is in the driveway and I am trying to get some help.

As I explained, the car is not starting and I am trying to find a solution. I am not in a hurry because I have transportation, but I would like to repair the BMW or call a mechanic to do so.

I was thinking that it might be something avoiding electricity to the spark plugs. But, since I told you, I am not very knowledgeable and I am asking if you guys think of something that i can check.

Thanks

Response From Hammer Time

If you think you're going to attempt this yourself, you need to read this

Response From polito353

I understand... Now the car in in the driveway at the house. When I try to start the car, it makes the initial sound ( goes to 500rpm ) like a normal car but never starts. Might it happen that the spark plugs are not getting enough power to work? What do you guys think?
I checked the oil and does not look like the oil is mixed with water.
No weird lights coming up in the dashboard either.

Loud intermittent rattling in engine compartment

Question From saintfisher427 on Loud intermittent rattling in engine compartment

My 2006 Honda Civic started making a rattling sound a few days ago. It sounds like something loose vibrating back and forth. I believe the noise is coming from the serpentine belt area. May possibly be one of those rollers/wheels as one at the far bottom appears to shake when the noise occurs (don't know what it looks like normally as it is VERY subtle if not just in my mind). My mechanic is out of town until next week, so I am trying to see if someone can diagnose it by sound and maybe I can fix it myself. Couldn't find any videos of this sound so I uploaded one, link below. You can post here or on the YouTube video.

TURN DOWN VOLUME! I THINK THIS VIDEO MAY BE LOUD!

Response From Discretesignals

Sounds like it needs a belt tensioner assembly.

Gates makes a kit which includes the belt. I'd recommend changing that too. The hydraulic portion of the tensioner goes bad and can't dampen the belt vibrations, so the tensioner arm vibrates making that noise.

Response From saintfisher427

Sorry for not responding. Haven't had time to look at it more. Today I drove it and found out in this awful 90 degree weather that the AC didn't work and it spewed out hot air. Remember in the first post how I mentioned the wheel/roller that the sound seemed to be coming from and it looked like it would wobble when it made that sound? That roller happens to be the one attached to the air compressor. Coincidence? Probably not, especially by sound location. I don't know how the wheel is attached to the compressor to power it, but do you think it broke off so it still spins freely, but doesn't actually power the compressor? Am I looking at having to completely replace the compressor? Thanks for your time!

Response From Discretesignals Top Rated Answer

The compressor has a clutch that engages the engine to the internals of the compressor. The serpentine belt drives the compressor when the clutch is engaged. The hub pulley the belt spins works all the time and uses a roller bearing. More than likely that bearing has gone bad. I really don't think they offer just the clutch assembly aftermarket for that model compressor. You can get the clutch assembly from the dealer, but the price of the assembly is as much as a new aftermarket compressor. Besides that you don't want to stick $300 worth of clutch parts on an old compressor that is high in its service life. If the car has a lot of mileage, the best choice would be to replace the entire compressor in my opinion. You might want to have your mechanic take a look to confirm your suspicion.

Response From saintfisher427

OK. Sounds like if it's the AC compressor it will be an expensive repair with labor probably costing more than the parts. Would it even be worth fixing AC if it's pricey? I'm in Wisconsin, so half the year is mild heat (80s) and the other half requires heat and not ac. But...it only has 105000 miles on it so it should have some life left. I have no plans to sell the car anytime soon. I'll have the mechanic look at it and give me a quote since I clearly won't be fixing this myself.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

The question "Would it be worth it subject"

Wisconsin: It get's hot there as it does where I am, MA where A/C is a must for most just a shorter time so you find out what a proper full fix will cost not just a compressor - if failed would be more items and work if the car is worth it and you and your own need makes it mandatory for even the few real hot days there too.
Yes - It might cost a couple thousand bucks for a whole fix? Find out. Do what it right for you. I found more than 1/2 of folks with this and now a rusting car with other expensive things becoming possible chose NO. Can totally understand the well dressed person for work or any reason not wanting to sweat like crazy, wreck clothes, appearance for a certain job or function routinely done or health issue where it truly isn't healthy.

Old Phart here. Owned tons of cars just my own - hundreds. Maybe 1/2 never had A/C at all ever. Still know folks who will special order cars without and save some real bucks. Problem: Cars used to vent fresh air really well. All side windows went all the way down, vent and floor vents so just moving along with shorts and a t-shirt is enough. That or some only need to go a few miles so not enough time to care.

Others routinely stuck or in slow traffic it doesn't even need to be a hot day or those who highway drive a lot the dang noise is obnoxious of open windows.

You may need to put a dummy compressor in this car or brackets for belt depending on just how it's broken so the belt system works and just forget having A/C.

Can't decide that for you. If a real nice car overall now with a long life expectancy factor that in for expensive repairs like anyone. A/C if not working and just that alone will lower it's value but not for all.

I'm going on your location about the same as my own. Have choice of vehicles and if one is down with A/C just use the other - that's me not you and could fix this at cost and still might not - only you decide knowing what it will take and cost,

Question From Guest on power steering issues Dodge Pickup

drive a 1996 Doge 1500 extended cab with approximately 186,000 miles. I was backing up slowly and turning to the right with the steering wheel pulled all the way to the left when the power steering disengaged. I think I heard a small "pink". I might be making that up in my head.

The fluid level is fine. all other pumps are wokring. serpentine belt is not loose.

steerin wheel works but has no power help. have to be moving so I can manhandle the whee.

have had some slight play issues with the steering over the last few years, but am thinking this is more the result of a some loose tie rod issues.
am wondering if there is a safety vavle feature that I set off, and if so, can I manually reset it by turign the wheel the other way or something. or maybe reseting the computer by disconnecting the battery, etc.

Remove the belt and see if the pully comes off in your havd. Sounds like the shaft has broken internally.
