94 gmc suburb ac grinding

Question From hellowdy on 94 gmc suburb ac grinding

ac pulley bearing grinding noise, metal shards, but it's intermittent. had ac off, should i turn ac on. Can i drive 1 hr. to mec. I've already driven 1 hr. Is there something i can remove, to stop the grinding

Response From Hammer Time

Yes, you can replace the compressor, dryer and orifice tube and probably the condenser too if that happened due to internal binding.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

RE: Question if you can drive it to mec (mechanic) like this = NO! Only if A/C is solely on it's own belt with whatever engine is in this could you remove that belt and go or it will probably burn out totally as HT just said. It's not clear if now clutch bearing or compressor bearings but either if now throwing shards of metal are too far gone.

Chances are it's on just one belt unknown stage of failure so when just that burns off you have no usable engine either so tow it or by-pass (don't think you can on this without parts) compressor for even a drive or run again. Past late on this,

T

Response From Hammer Time

This truck does not have a separate AC drive belt.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Didn't go hunting for every possible configuration or engine possible. OP, IMO doesn't understand that it's probably just a clutch or clutch bearing but now failed too much not just a noise. "Intermittent" mentioned suggests it's quiet when A/C engaged which would be fine to force it but not if too cold.

I doubt OP is ready to spend a freaking fortune on this especially if rear A/C set up. An hour's drive is too much and YOU or I might be able to create something but not fast enough nor quick DIY to look for options if just temp by-pass or used junk compressor with good clutch for the run to fix only?
OP - When ONE belt finally is destroyed you lose all belt driven items you can't fake. Alternator, PS, WATER PUMP + any damage when it lets go! So high bet you are in for a tow from where it is or worse underway if you try for that run,

Response From hellowdy Top Rated Answer

Thanks for the info--Yes, it has one serpentine belt.
Last week, I drove the suburban into mechanic (30 min.), without the air conditioner on. It made a steady grinding but not super loud. Mechanic took out a lot of the old air conditioner and put in an "assy work-around" (a bracket from Napa for the air conditioner pulley) $99 half labor, half parts.Problem solved, Thanks

Response From Hammer Time

One problem solved.................. another one created ............... no AC.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Smile HT - OP isn't walking over this either

pig or knock

Question From Coloradomom on pig or knock

1993 GMC suburban ,5.7 liter motor .
At 30/35 per hour a ping or knock .
In drive with one foot on brake and on gas ,same sound .
At idle no noise is heard.
Plugs check /plug wires check Good

Response From nickwarner Top Rated Answer

Try taking off your serpentine belt and see if the noise goes away. If it does, the trouble is a belt driven accessory. If not, I would drop the oil pan and check the rod and main bearings for damage. Be advised that to do so will require someone with knowledge and experience to put it back together properly and to properly evaluate the bearings themselves.

Response From Coloradomom

I will try that.

Response From nickwarner

Bear in mind if you do have a bad bottom end the motor will need to be pulled out and overhauled. If thats not to your liking with the age of the vehicle a used motor might be a decent route. Just make sure there is some guarantee that the one you get isn't a million mile wonder on its last legs. Most salvage yards have gotten good about listing the exact condition upfront of what they have. Good luck to you.

Response From Coloradomom

I am already looking at a few used motors,
In neutal i do not hear this sound

Response From Coloradomom

I have learned something today.
Before you look for a motor .Look at every thing in your motor and sounds.
I thought i had a bad motor ,,but it come back to a crack in my fly wheel ,that was making my knock.

Thanks every one

Response From Hammer Time

Yep, that's the down side to these forums. We don't get to actually hear the noise and in your case it probably would have made it pretty easy to identify what the really problem was.

Response From Coloradomom

Yes it is,
I was prepared to get an other 5.7 ,but i was in the right place and right time.
You would be surprised on what a garden hose will do or wooding stick. They carry a tick or sound real nice.

Response From Hammer Time

That's true. we improvise like that all the time. A long screwdriver can tell you a lot too.

Response From Coloradomom

Valve covers removed .
Rockers move sightly.and still have a knock.

Response From Sidom

As it was mentioned before it real tough diag'ing a noise online. You can't hear the speed, pitch, area, etc......

Slower knocks are usually bottom end, so of course the faster ones would be top end. You can try disabling the suspected cyl and if the makes a big differenc in how loud the knock is you are probably looking at a lower end problem.........

Good luck

Response From Coloradomom

It sounds like the upper right of the motor .
I have the valve covers off. Some of the push rods are loose and some not.
A few of the rockers are loose and some are not.
I am at top dead center .
I am considering on replacing the push rods, but of course i do not know how tight the need to be.?

Response From Hammer Time

I believe your barking up the wrong tree with the push rod idea. Of course the tension would vary as some valves are open and some are not.

Response From Coloradomom

OK
Then were do i go from here?
I could put the valve covers back on,And put a Qt of ATF in the motor and let it run for a hour .And change out the oil and see what happens .
I CAN SAY ALL ROCKERS/PUSH RODS ARE RECEIVING OIL.

Response From Hammer Time

I have no idea what your noise is and no one else will be able to identify a noise over the Internet. It's just not possible to identify something you can't hear.

Response From Coloradomom

Ok
Thank you for your help.

Response From Coloradomom

well i am back to square one .
Have a bad push rod . so i will try and replace it .

Response From Coloradomom

In do time i will get an other motor.
Some people think your nuts when you get a garden hose to listen for sound.
It works great on the top of the motor or bottom.
Thanks a lot

Response From nickwarner

If your motor is still running right, I wouldn't just change it out. Glad it was only a flexplate. Takes a bit of labor but cheaper than an engine for sure. Thanks for posting the fix. Don't think you're nuts. I used to think I was but the voices in my head convinced me I was fine

Response From Coloradomom

Well i am back to square one .

Pulled plugs And And 6/8 plug are dis colored and knocking again,
So my next step is to pull the cover and check 6/8 .and if the push rod is bad i will replace them .and see what happens.

Response From nickwarner

Thanks for posting the fix

Response From Coloradomom

I just got lucky, and was in the right place at the right time.
A 32" garden hose or shovel stick work perfect and carry a sound or tick.
Thanks again

Heating / Serpentine Belt

Question From Xtimer on Heating / Serpentine Belt

Hi, I am looking for help with my truck it is...

Year of vehicle: 1995
Make of vehicle: GMC
Model of vehicle: Jimmy
Engine size: 4.3L V6
Mileage/Kilometers: ~270'000

-The problem is whenever i turn on the heat in the car, I hear squeeling from the serpentine (accessory) belt. I am assuming something is seizing. Thing is it goes fine without the heat on. I left the heat on and it shredded a belt and melted rubber all over the pulley thing all the way on the left of the engine. (Don't know what it's called) I replaced the belt already and it runs fine. . .until i turn the ac on then it tears belts apart. I dont think whatever pulley that controls the heating is turning at all when i engage the heat and causing the belt to slide over it rather than turning it.

-So what would be causing this thing to seize up? It's winter here and were about to get a cold snap. =)

Thanks

Response From steve01832

Most likely needs an A/C compressor clutch.

Steve

Response From Tom Greenleaf Top Rated Answer

To add: A temporary fix should be to unplug a/c compressor at the clutch and tie it out of harms way,

2011 GMC Acadia Engine Failure

Showing 3 out of 13 Posts | Show 10 Hidden Posts
Question From kdugan2016 on 2011 GMC Acadia Engine Failure

2011
GMC
Acadia
3.6L
46,298 Miles

Situation: Was traveling down the road approx. 45MPH, went to pass another vehicle at about 55MPH and it would not shift with also a distinct clicking noise coming from the engine. I was able to pass then I let off the gas the RPMs went back down. Accelerated again (again distinct clicking noise) and it shifted hard, then the engine shut off. I barley noticed it shut off, until the MPH started dropping and I lost power steering. Got it to the side of the road, and turned key over all power is still there but would only click once. Engine would not crank. Had it towed to the house (got 2nd vehicle so my family could continue our road trip).

Troubleshooting: Came home that night hooked up OBD II reader and pulled P0328(Knock Sensor 1 Circuit High Input) and P0333 (Knock Sensor 2 Circuit Malfunction)

Vehicle still has all power but will only click 1 time, and will not crank. There is obviously a major problem but way more than I can diagnose. So I have Acadia towed to local GMC dealership to have diagnosed........

Dealership Results:
Removed starter to isolate the problem between transmission and engine. Problem is in the engine. Their solution: 1) Engine Overhaul 2) Replace with used engine 3) Replace with brand new engine.

I do routine maintenance myself and I am strict about my oil changes and checking of fluids. I do brakes, rotors, plugs, wires normal stuff. This is way over my head and need some advice on this situation. Currently it is sitting at the dealership as I do not want to make a decision on what to do yet. They are looking to charge me between $3000-$5800 for the described solutions. Financially this is not good for me right now. I do have family that is good with this stuff and I am currently working on some advice from them. But I am seeking further guidance.

As of right now I would rather have it brought back to my house and have the mechanic in my family take apart the motor and find the problem and fix accordingly to save $.

What kind of problem does this sound like? Should I take the dealership route (I am hesitant). Any advice would help!

Thanks
- Kevin

Response From Discretesignals

Did they remove the serpentine belt to be sure there isn't an accessory locked up?

Response From Hammer Time Top Rated Answer

Did they remove the serpentine belt to be sure there isn't an accessory locked up?

It's funny you mention that. My employer is a car dealer and is friends with a bunch of other dealers and they all buy a lot of cars at the auction. The auction has their own mechanics that diagnose the vehicles on site. They have one section for disabled cars. One of his friends bought a Mercedes with a value of around $40K and he bought it for peanuts because the auction diagnosed it as a seized engine. They got it home, cut the belt and it fired right up and ran like a top. It had a bad alternator.

Response From kev2

there you go - colleague has an idea, get it home your family can help check that and do a 2nd look and as you said its only costing some beer.

Response From kdugan2016

yes and i do appreciate the help, and i was joking about the beers. I will pay for the labor with them, just not the $1,264 that the dealer wants to charge......

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Hey - If this is really seized and not some accidental damage causing sudden oil loss there should be a hidden drivetrain warranty for at least 5 years (date of sale when first put in service) or at least 50,000 miles maybe more with a deductible on it thru GM. Read that in owner's manual and warranty info if that is still in with manual.

They really aren't thrilled to honor that as the dealer doesn't get as much for the job nor does manufacturer want any extra expense but absolutely know they'll pay for most of it if really a blown engine within more time and miles than meets plain original warranty,

T

Response From kdugan2016

I already looked into Warranty information for it and the 5 year expired Sep 2015.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Shoot! Try anyway with a phone # or other contact method and speak to a supervisor who answers. If you can prove you took care of it as required you may get lucky and they'll honor it beyond or make an offer to help.

Stuff happens almost never by surprise at about this time but it does. If you have time it's worth a try but they have every right not to honor it by listed time limit. Good for you for checking on the date at least and knowing it might be there and covered,

T

Response From kdugan2016

I am unaware if they did, it doesn't seem like they did.

Response From kev2

wanting a second opinion sounds reasonable... At least ask for a more detailed explanation of dealer findings.

"mechanic in my family take apart the motor and find the problem and fix accordingly to save $."
sounds like you are NOT costing the labor into this theory.... If the work/labor is FREE a no brainer- skill level being the same.

Response From kdugan2016

Yes using the 2 individuals in my family that can do this work are not going to charge me labor at all. Maybe some beers (or alot) haha.....but in all seriousness I am going to speak with them in person here in a bit and get more of an explanation then trying to get me to give the green light on thousands of dollars worth of work over the phone.

Just trying to reach out on this forum to see if anyone has dealt with this issue on the 2011 Acadia. I cant believe the motor is shot after 46,000 miles.....I do not drive like an idiot and take good care of her, if not my father would kill me!

As for skill level, my father is very good with this stuff. And the other guy is more than qualified to do this work, as he does this daily. I am not worried about that.

Response From kev2

even forest gump knows shit happens.... why you IDK,
Asking questions might find a contributing factor BUT you still will need an engine... Get all the info you can from dealer - what was diagnosed and how...needs an engine is vague esp with that price tag...

PS shop online for remans - look at JASPERS, warranty ?

Response From kdugan2016

Yes I understand Sh!t happens, thanks for the insight.

Update:
Dealership Summary: Attempt to operate and inspected vehicle. Powertrain would not turn over with out excessive effort. Removed and reinstalled starter to gain access to torque converter bolts to disconnect transmission from engine. Engine still almost completely seized/torque converter and final drive of transmission moving freely.

Yea i guess im getting a new engine........

Sqealing noise from under hood

Question From confused1 on Sqealing noise from under hood

I have a 1999 GMC Truck about 127,000 miles and here lately I've noticed this noise coming from under the hood. It only does this when I first get in it and leave and go down the road while it is still showing 160 o not warmed up yet but after it warms up it stops making the noise. What would cause this noise? I was told by a friend of mine who is a mechanic, but so busy and when I do go to let him here the noise there is no noise ,that it could be the tensioner. The belts are fine, radiator was flushed last year and the guy checked the water pump, fan etc.nothing bad.I just noticed this a few months ago. I also notice a noise (like a lifters knocking) coming from under the drivers side but that would not be anything like that, because I always keep oil changed and use Lucas oil treatment. The noise is only durning warm up nothing else. Thanks for any help.

Response From dmac0923 Top Rated Answer

some things you could try.

1. like mentioned before with the wd-40 on the belt surfaces.

2: WITH EXTREME CAUTION. while the engine is running, take a LONG prybar, rachet extenion, screw driver. (something long enough to keep your face away from the engine. and hold it to the different engine accesories, like your alternator, PS pump. or whaterver else you have easy access to. put your ear up to the extension and listen for bearing noise.

3. remove the serpentine belt and spin each pulley by hand and listen for squeaks or odd rolling noises. its possible that when the bearings in the pulleys are cold, they squeak but when they warm up the metal expands and closes the internal space difference eliminating the squeak you hear

Response From Guest

Sounds like a belt issue to me.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Belt squeal is fairly common. Try some WD-40 on the belt and if it shuts right up replace the belt with a quality belt - they make them advertized to be quiet belts and they do work when pulleys are shinned up with some miles on them.

Knock: Is oil pressure fast and high right at cold start up? Any neglect with this engine - sludge on dipstick or under oil cap seen? There are some Vortec 5.7s that have mild piston slap and no other problems. Just high quality oil should minimize noise and it usually doesn't kill the motor. Rumor has it GM tried some shorter piston skirts on some and that was a side effect??
