2001 Olds Intrigue. 3.5l 117k
I couldnt get it to pass emissions because of the check engine light. Originally showed P 410 I replaced the secondary air injection pump and the check engine light is still on. When we put a scaner on it, it does not show any trouble codes. I finaly got the state to pass it for me, but I want it fixed. Any help?

For some of the emission systems the PCM may need to see an issue two or three times before the PCM will set a hard fault code?
In other words the computer may need to see an issue with this (or whatever) system two or three times consecutively; while performing self tests, before it will store hard codes.
The PCM will however store a pending code the first time it sees this kind of fault; many of these cheep-o code readers cannot read or display pending codes; but if there’s a light on, there’s a code set somewhere in one of the computers.
Again a pending code is something that the PCM has seen that’s not right; but waits to see if it is a continuing issue or just a one time fluke. The PCM will also erase a pending code, after a predetermined number of passes, during self testing.
Depending on what system is at suspect; the PCM may or may not turn the check engine light on; when a pending code is warranted?
So if you want this fixed; I’m going to suggest taking the vehicle in and have it properly scanned and diagnosed by a technician?
The test procedure for the 410 code is something like 43 steps long and will take you in as many different directions? It is all dependent on the outcome of each individual step, of the test procedure.
At the same time this may not have anything to do with the AIR (Air Injection Reaction) system it self? The computer could be setting a 410 because during the self test of the system; the results are falling into the parameters for setting the code; because of (for example only) a lazy O2 sensor not providing fast accurate information?

Thank you for help. I forgot to tell you in the OP that the PCS light is on also. Make any difference in this situation, or is that going to be a whole different issue?

PCS is the Precision Control System (a form of or part of the traction control system) and is controlled by the EBCM (electronic break control module) and likely will not have anything to do with the PCM. When that light comes on, it’s telling you that the PCS system has been shut down; due to the EBCM has seen a fault. It usually will also turn on the trac (if it has one) or the ABS light along with it?
Again a basic code reader cannot access the EBCM.

2007 Saturn ion. 2.2l check engine light issue
we have had this car for a year, no real issues. however, time for registration renewal and an emissions test .
the smog test will indicate secondary air flow failure.
we have plugged into a scantool, the scantool will not activate the secondary air pump when we command the pump "on'
I have installed a new secondary air injection pump, as well as a new air management valve.
once we reset the light, the car runs fine, however the check engine light re appears after about 2 hours of operation .
I am unsure of where to proceed next..
any help would be grateful

What is the code you are seeing?
Anyway this is an electric air pump - did you check fuses and relays?

we checked fuses with a power probe
couldn't find any issues, all seem to be working

the way I read the issue - the scanner will NOT turn on SAI airpump...
SO the pump is not getting energized - there are 2 fuses 1 for relay 1 for pump then will need to check the relay.


This is a california emission item only I think I will check time permitting for wiring diagram -

look for a 40amp fuse- that would be the red wire to pump - I would suspect if relay signal were not getting power to PCM there would be another code- Being able to command SAI I suspect but need to ask- you can read ALL codes esp manufacturers specific P1xxx and P2xxx

40 amp fuse is good
there is this 40 amp fuse, as well as a relay labled air pump
I have swapped the relay with another (same spec's) and will see if anything changes
also, with a continuity tester I checked the 6 pin plug that goes to the air management valve, not all pins have power, so I am assuming that this connector is not always powered?
would a bad or loose connector at the air pump itself cause a similar issue

I need to pull this engine from my car but want to know if I can do this without pulling the cv joint axles from both sides of the transmission. The engine is VIN T type. I'm pulling it because it because of maintenance issues. Thanks for your replies. dcooke

Chevy never made a 3.0 engine.


  1. Remove air cleaner assembly, including air flow tube from throttle body.
  2. Disconnect battery cables.
  3. Remove hood with assistant.
  4. Drain engine coolant. For additional procedures
  5. Rotate engine forward.
  6. Remove brake vacuum tube at plenum and booster.
  7. Remove throttle, TV, and cruise control cables.
  8. Remove necessary electrical wiring.
  9. Remove secondary air injection pump assembly and support aside, if equipped.
  10. Rotate engine back.
  11. Remove radiator hose clamps and hoses.
  12. Remove heater hose clamps and hoses.

WARNING: To reduce the risk of fire and personal injury, always relieve fuel system pressure prior to disconnecting fuel system components.

  1. Remove fuel lines.
  2. Remove power steering pump and set aside.
  3. Raise vehicle and suitably support.
  4. Remove flywheel covers.
  5. Remove starter.
  6. Remove right engine splash shield.
  7. Remove flywheel to torque converter bolts.
  8. Remove oil filter.
  9. Remove A/C compressor mounting bolts and hang compressor to body.
  10. Remove necessary electrical connectors.
  11. Remove engine mount retaining nuts at frame.
  12. Remove transaxle support bracket bolts at transaxle.
  13. Remove exhaust pipe bolts at rear exhaust manifold.
  14. Lower vehicle.
  15. Remove crossover pipe.
  16. Remove vacuum modulator line at modulator.
  17. Support transaxle.
  18. Remove transaxle to engine retaining bolts.
  19. Attach lifting device.
  20. Remove engine assembly.
  21. Remove flywheel bolts, flywheel and spacer.
  22. Engine assembly to engine stand.
