Question From sean on 2002 Saturn Vue vs 2002 Hyundai Santa Fe

I am looking to purchase either a 2002 Saturn Vue AWD 6 cylinder with 92,179 miles for $5,788 or a 2002 Hyundai Santa Fe LX AWD 6 cylinder with 117,338 miles for $5,790. Both are automatic. Which one do you feel would be the better buy?

Response From Hammer Time Top Rated Answer

I would have normally said go for the Saturn but since they aren't making them any more, you may be safer with the Korean stuff.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Can only be an opinion but neither! Go just Front wheel Drive if you want static traction and forget anything with high miles with AWD,

Question From jmacduff on 2002 3.0 saturn vue no fuel to cyl.

I am trying to troubleshoot a 2002 Saturn vue 3.0L v6. 120,000mi, Engine turns over but will not start (does fire when starter fluid is sprayed in intake. I have changed the fuel filter and verified fuel pressure @ filter outlet to be 55PSI. Where do I go from here? (While this question is out I will be attempting to test power to injectors). Any help is much appreciated!

Response From Hammer Time

That's not the way that you test fuel pressure. You are testing "dead head" pressure and you need to measure regulated pressure by "T-ing" into the line and monitor the pressure.

You need to test 2 things here

1) Test for injector pulse using a small bulb called a noid light. If none found, check for power supply at one side of the injector with the key on.

2) Use a fuel pressure gauge to test for correct fuel pressure, also noticing if the pressure holds when key is shut off.

Response From jmacduff

OK. I'll get my hands on a fuel test gauge. I was hopeing to test injectors without removing the intake. Is that possible?

Response From Hammer Time

If you can access one of the plugs, you can plug a noid light into it. If not you will have to access the wiring before the injector and tap into it to attach your noid light. That doesn't mean to cut the wire open. Do as little damage to the insulation as possible with a very small puncture.

Response From Discretesignals

You can't dead the pump on that one unless you plug off the return at the fuel filter because the regulator is part of the fuel sender module. 55 psi is about right for pressure.

Any trouble codes being stored in the engine controller?
Also check to see if the passlock system is activated. If the passlock system is activated, the PCM will disable fuel injection.

Response From Hammer Time Top Rated Answer

A Passlock activation will cause it to start and immediately stall.

Response From jmacduff

Thanks to all for your advice, I have decided to get the car to a mechanic but how would I reset if the pass code were the problem?
Thanks again for all your time.

Response From Hammer Time

If that were the case you would have a flashing security signal and the engine would start and stall so it's highly unlikely that it's a Passlock problem.

Question From HomestarWPG on 2006 Saturn Vue - Unknown indicator light

Hi,

Recently I've noticed a warning light has come on in my car and I can't identify it. I looked through the owners manual but this light is not listed anywhere.

It stays on for 5-10 mins then turns off. The car seems to drive fine, but I'd like to know what it's trying to tell me.

I've uploaded a picture here:

My car is a 2006 Saturn Vue.

Any help is appreciated!

Response From RoboDisko

I think that light is supposed to mean low coolant. I could be wrong, but I would check the coolant level, top it off, and see if that changes anything.

Update: may find relevant info link deleted

Response From Hammer Time Top Rated Answer

RoboDisco, you need to read the FORUM RULES.

Links are not allowed

HomestarWPG, yes that is the low coolant light.

Response From RoboDisko

Sorry Hammer Time about the link, I don't read the forum rules every time before I post, and I don't post often enough to memorize them. I just thought I would link because the site had a bunch of info relevant to the OP's question, and it is more organized to link than to copy and pate the information.

I've also never been on a forum that doesn't allow linking - until now.

Sorry, and I won't do it again.
(I also find it mildly amusing that you linked in your post, when the forum rules CLEARLY state that linking is NOT permitted, unless it is your own picture or video. I might have to make a sig of it.)

Response From Hammer Time

Administrators and Mods can post links. You cannot.

Response From HomestarWPG

Thanks to both of you for the info. I'll check the coolant!

Response From Tom Greenleaf

If you find it low as warning light suggest find out why right away. Cars shouldn't consume engine coolant. You may or may not see a leak someplace and be forewarned NOT to try some sealer but fix the leak,

Response From HomestarWPG

Is it possible that extremely cold weather is making the light go on erroneously?
Its been -30c almost every day for weeks (in Winnipeg).

Response From Tom Greenleaf

No argument goofy things happen with the cold. YOU JUST MUST KNOW FOR SURE WHAT THE DEAL IS. Warnings are just that and usually mean biz. If your "recovery" tank has marks for hot and cold (most do) fine if a touch lower if checked when that cold. That isn't generally where the warning is sensed?

That tank of coolant isn't doing diddle for the engine itself just saving coolant as it expands and return it when it cools off keeping the engine itself always 100% full year round.

Sensor is possibly/likely on an end tank of the radiator. You could see if that's messed up but it's probably telling you, you really are low. The problem is "why" as said. Air or vapor for any reason is trouble waiting. You can overheat even in that cold.

You'll notice if heater quits or is erratic it has problems. This leak could be anything from some fool hose clamp to a cracked head. No coolant means game over for some serious parts and by nature will surprise you and leave you walking at the worst possible time.

Find out as my bet is it really is low and catch the issue right now and save a lot of grief and money,

Saturn Vue '06 won't start? (Video)

Question From gfuentesgz on Saturn Vue '06 won't start? (Video)

I have been having some problems starting my '06 Saturn Vue (2WD, 2.2L). The engine starts but it dies right away. I replaced the battery and the spark plugs yesterday and used the car today all day long so I know those two replacements were done correctly. I had a little bit of a rough time getting it started today going to and from work (~8-9 mile ride) but it got going and drove fine. I just tried going out again but this time it won't start.
I had been having this problem for the last week or so but until now it had started after the 2nd or 3rd try.

My next idea is to change the ignition coil housing along with the control module. If that doesn't work my next guess would be the carburetor but i now nothing about carburetors (removing, cleaning, etc.).

Can you guys give me any kind of input? Should i go ahead and spend another ~$180 to change the coils and control module? The car has about 130K miles on it.

Here's a video of what's happening:

Any help would be IMMENSELY appreciated

Response From Tom Greenleaf

It doesn't have a carb at all.

You need to find out what is missing and begin with finding out if it lacks spark or fuel delivery while cranking. New plugs and battery have nothing to do with that and fine that they worked for a day but not conclusive if that helped anything?

Get codes if you can and post the #s. Fuel pressure or at least hear the fuel pump or nothing and test for spark.

Tossing a coil and module is just wild guessing so far and that gets expensive and confuses the problem unless you just hit on which is a problem by dumb luck?

Alright quick update:

I just went outside and tried holding down the accelerator while turning the key and it started fine. I let it sit on idle for a few minutes to make sure it wouldn't stall on its own and it didn't. Then I tried starting it for the second time but had no luck. Does this mean the ignition system (as far as coil and control module) is fine?

I live in a cold climate (last night it got to negative F). I haven't added any fuel treatment to my tank in a long while but I'll make sure to pick up a bottle before i spend more money on parts.

I bought the car with about 100K miles on it and i haven't replaced the fuel filter, I doubt the previous owner did. I also checked that the throttle body opens and closes fine. Now what's the fuel pump supposed to sound like or how do i check it?

Thanks a lot for your help!

Response From Tom Greenleaf Top Rated Answer

No offense but I don't think this fix it your calling. Rather better to find a shop and tech you like and send this whole job out for repair as needed,

No worries, no offense taken.

I was afraid it'd come to this and was trying to see if there was some sort of fairly easy fix i could do at home...If the fuel treatment doesn't "magically" solve the problem I think I'll end up taking it to a shop...

Thanks a lot for your help anyway

Response From Hammer Time

Do you have any security security lights on or flashing when this happens?

If not, I would be testing the fuel pressure.
