Question From joe2005sable on Where do I find a service manual for 2005 Mercury Sable

3.0 24valvue DOHC

I have a Ford Taurus & Mercury Sable 1996 - 2005 fRepair Manual rom Haynes. Iis a pretty good comprehensive manual, but as detailed in some areas as I would like. Can I get one from a dealer or online for just A/C system (diagrams, step-by-step procedures, etc..).

Just asking.

Alright my oil pan recently cracked and leaked all the oil out of the pan while i was driving down the road. i noticed a small clunking noise in the engine and pulled over within a half mile. now she makes that noise all the time, but still runs.

I have all the repair manuals and tools i just need to know what to look at first as far as diagnostics.

any ideas about what could have happened?
is it salvageable?

Response From Hammer Time Top Rated Answer

There really isn't anything to diagnose here. The engine is severely damaged and needs to be rebuilt or replaced. I suggest replacing it with a remanufactured long block. Don't attempt rebuilding it yourself. that takes years of experience to do correctly.

How to replace A/C Compressor on 2005 Mercury Sable

Question From joe2005sable on How to replace A/C Compressor on 2005 Mercury Sable

2005
Mercury
Sable
3.0 - 24valve DOHC

AC quit working and squeeling noise under the hood. Took it into the shop and was told the A/C Compressor is bad.
Quoted $1,200 for factory recommended repair. Quoted $750 for only A/C compressor replacement. Cost to me to diagnois
the problem and get estimate was $75 which would apply to repairs if I had that shop do the work. Contacted Autozone
and got pricing for a A/C Compressor w/ Clutch for around $200. When asked why the estimate to just repalce the A/C compressor
was so high, the explaination I got was that because of the width of my engine (DOHC), replacement was more time-consuming and
involved dropping the engine to change it. Is this guy blowing smoke or speaking the truth? I'm inclined to tackle the job myself,
although I'm a computer guy, not a auto guy. I had the shop evacuate the A/C system as part of my $75 diagnostic fee. They
were a little surprised I didn't just have them fix it. They asked if I was going to have them refill the A/C. I said maybe - what's the cost?
They said $106! Right now the car is in my driveway and A/C is evacuated. I have an alternate car, so there is no time crunch to repair this.
I really want to do this myself and save $$$. Worst case scenario is I can't do it and have to take it back in to have the shop fix it? Seems
like it is worth the try. Can anyone help advise on tools needed, procedure to follow. I have a Haynes Repair Manual fo r1996-2006 Ford Taurus and Mercury Sable. What worried me was the comment about having to lower/drop the engine on this particular make/model to replace the A/C compressor????

I can post digital pics if needed.

Please Help!

Joe

Sounds like compressor seized so it's not just a compressor replacement as that won't work. It may have suffered the "black death" and lots more needs to be done or a new not some junk rebuilt will fail right away and no warranty if not done to spec.

Think hard about whether you really want this or not. We are here to help but it's nothing like just swapping out an alternator whatsoever.

Do read this link at this same site above this thread.......... http://autoforums.carjunky.com/Automotive_Repair_C1/Heating_or_AC_Issues_F8/REFRIGERANT_CHARGING_PROCEDURE_IN_AUTOMOTIVE_A/C_SYSTEMS_P45460/

That's what you need when everything is done and perfect just to charge it. Alone that a college course never mind complications. Think about it and the equipment needed and risks involved,

Question From Joysee on 1992 Mercury Cougar

My Cougar has Engine Problems, I can't figure it out and neither can a former mechanic, The engine shakes really bad, it makes a tractor noise too, but thats from the exhaust i know that, anyways, we have tested the piston compression all of them come out normal except one, we have replaced the distributor and cap, that didn't help, we replaced spark plug wired, spark plugs, and thats not it either. We believe a valve is left open, but we dont know how to access that.. anyone know?

Also, when i accelerate, it takes a long time, I could put the gas petal to the floor and it stays the same, slowly accelerates or just revs up the engine, its almost like my fuel injectors are dirty, i put in injector cleaner, that didn't help, i replaced the fuel filter and that didn't help either. When i do get up to speed i have to let off the gas a lil and the tranny makes a clunk and jerks the car.. Its not really loud its enough to hear and feel.. Anyone have any ideas of what i could do to improve the motor and my speed?

Thanks!

Response From Tom Greenleaf

How bad was the compression on the lowest cylinder?? If the cylinder isn't helping it can feel like you lost two, T

Response From Joysee

It was off by 20 i believe, it was still getting some compression but not a lot, not the same as all the others

Response From Tom Greenleaf

I don't think that's off enough to cause wild symtoms. Try a vacuum test and watch the needle as that can be telling. This could be a weak valve spring and you would still get compression at cranking speed then it would feel like a plug wire was left off. Hard to diagnose but it happened to me. After lots of hair loss I found it, T

Response From Joysee

Now if it is a spring or a vavle, is there instructions you can give me so i can find it and fix the prob?

Also do you have a solution about my acceleration prob. you think its from my engine being shitty?

Response From Tom Greenleaf

You should take the spark plug out of the weaker cylinder and compare it to another. From there you could get some info on where to go next. Replacing a valve spring if found broken isn't real simple. They are held in by two little keys and if it falls you can get in trouble!!

It could also be a valve problem or something else?? The mentioned vacuum test would help. A valve or valve spring is tricky to diagnos as said. Spring can look good and not be?? Keep at it, T

Well ill talk to the guy that is helping me with my car and see what we can do, i am suppose to wait until i can get a repair manual but they are soo expensive and i dont see this happening until the near future when i can get money.. so thank you very much, ill be posting more questions if i have any!!!

Question From scyr on Engine Soon:Mercury Topaz 1994

Hello,

My old car is having some age and needs a computer checkup for an error on the dash board saying Engine Soon. The problem just show up this month and happen in the morning of wet weather or rainy day. The light will disappear when the engine is hot,dry and driving at the same time. The light will most likely show up when engine is idle, cold in wet weather. This is summer. I don't want to see this fall.

Before going to the garage and believing those mechanics. What could be the problem? it sound to me a sensor. May the oxygen sensor or the thermostat getting faulty.

This sound a common problem on those model , especially for car sleeping in the garage moist temperature. My car is sleeping outside. Any mechanic went in this situation before? Please assist and remember I am not a mechanic, please be detail and patient.

Hello,

Thank you for the reply.

The good news, the engine soon disappear by itself for the last week and a half.

What I did so far.
Get the haynes repair manual for this car.
as you told me use a voltmeter to find the trouble code.

to make sure it was hookup ok:
I used a mastercraft digital meter set to 20 DC Volts and used gauge 14 electric wire.
I followed the schema and make sure each connection were ground properly in pin or at the battery.
when key is off position, I get 12.50 volts on meter. telling me it ground ok all place. if I took off the probe from the plus battery meter come to 0 volt

for reading on digital meter , I only use the last 2 digits after the dots, when set to 20 v dc.

Ok so far, but the problem start now because I don't get the same answer

when ignition key turn on,engine off I end with code 59,61,62. it is not constant when I repeat the steps every 5 mins. That is what is tricking me to give the accurate reading.

when engine turn on. I got the code 14 steady. When I try back later 14 never came back at all and switch to 19 or 21

in conclusion I will have to wait until engine soon come more often. and needs the help of a mechanic to get the accurate reading.

according to the book.
19 erratic idle speed or signal when engine is on.

if 19 or 20 ,that is the right problem, I think only the dealer could fix it with his computer tools.
