Renault Espace wiper delay

Question From jason.p on Renault Espace wiper delay

Can anyone please advise. The delay wipe has failed on my '95 diesel Espace. Is there a relay or something that can be replaced, if so does anyone know where it is located. The fuse controlling it has been blowing and now there is just continuous wipe on the delay setting on the stalk. Any ideas? The Haynes manual doesn't seem to mention it. Thanks in advance.
(I have put this on a Renault forum but have had no replies, so perhaps it's a stupid question!)

Response From steve01832 Top Rated Answer

If the fuse is blowing, start by unplugging the wiper motor and see if the fuse holds. If it does, plug the motor in. If the fuse blows then, wiper motor has a dead short and must be replaced.
If the fuse blows with the wiper motor unplugged, you will need to start unplugging one wiper component at a time until the fuse holds. Then, the last thing that was unplugged is the cause of the short.

Response From jason.p

Thanks Steve. Since the delay (intermittent) wipe has stopped working the fuse has held. The wipers work fine at both speeds. Am I right in assuming there's a relay or something controlling the intermittent wipe that could be replaced?

Response From steve01832

Intermittent wipers are controlled by a module. If the problem is intermittent, usually is caused by either a chafed or loose wire, or a wiper motor that has a bad motor winding. Hard to tell without the vehicle here in front of me to do some tests.

Question From hammerchewer on renault engine imoboliser

Hello and welcome
Does anybody know how to dodge or bodge a renault megan scenic , the engine imoboliser has pack up and the man from the garage is talking £1000 yes £1000 to fix this is more than the car is worth HELP!

Response From DrElectrics Top Rated Answer

Those are tricky things. the immobiliser is wired into your start relay. You cant remove it, cause car won't go. Go and see an auto electrician and see if he can somehow bypass the module

Response From hammerchewer

thanks for that , any idea what is a realistic price?

Response From DrElectrics

How long is a peace of string? Go to a recommended auto electrician. Someone you know, or your friends know. It all depends on the wiring time and labour cost. Just let him know, you think you know the problem and let him test my theory. Advice is always free from those guys. If I would hazard a guess. I would say max 2.5 hrs labour and whatever 4mm Twin sheeth costs these days.

Question From ravin_munchkin on New Driver! in need of advice

hey there, im new to this site so not sure how all this works yet, but im having a few probs with my 1993 renault clio, im taking it to get a few repairs done on monday and dont wanna get ripped off, i need to have the following repairs done:

Fan belt needs tightening
oil needs changing
rear wheel bearings
and an overheating problem (fan dont kick in when gets hot)

Response From ravin_munchkin

hi
many thanks for your advice, although i may need further assistance if anyone else can offer advice its most appreciated!

Response From Tom Greenleaf Top Rated Answer

Hi and be safe new driver!

I don't know these cars at all but it doesn't matter for routine things it's general. Fan belt may need replacing at this age if never done - some easy - some harder but not too expensive. Perhaps a 1/4 hour's labor at the rate you should know up front.

Lube, oil and filter $ will vary on the quality of parts you want. This could be a special for $20 on up. Ask up front how that shop charges for this common service.

Wheel bearings: Most cars in that vintage use a sealed bearing that includes the hub. They can cost some bucks. That type would have just one on each wheel. Call for prices. You don't usually need both sides. A good bearing can last indefinately. If this has the "inner" and "outer" greasable type bearing they are less expensive and again you should need all four for the back. I just replace the bad ones - others will do both in a wheel and it depends on what is found when there.

Overheating - no fan: Could be an inexpensive coolant temp switch, a relay, or the fan motor is shot and they can get expensive. No telling on costs without knowing what's not working. Fix that as your whole engine is relying on you to not overheat it which can ruin the whole engine!!!!

Now some advice for you as a new driver and car owner: Watch out for all the other cars, don't go too fast, and go slow in weather conditions until you know what is safe for you and what the car can handle. Read the owner's manual. Ya - it's boring but it's full of good info and advice. Learn how to change a tire!! Get a tire pressure gauge and check them often...... and don't forget the spare! Learn how to check fluids and what type is used for what and how to add it. When something needs topping off or a tire keeps needing air - find out why.

Good luck,

T
