Bleeding the Radiator

Question From kingjim9 on Bleeding the Radiator

I'm replacing the radiator & lower radiator hose on my '94 Plymouth Acclaim. Whenever I'm done though i was wondring how do i bleed the air out from the system. Is it as simple as just running it for a while with the radiator cap off? If so how long do i let it run?

Thanks in advanced, Jim

Response From way2old

You can jack up the front end to where the radiator filler is the highest point in the system. Fill with coolant. Then run the vehicle until the temperature goes to normal or high normal temperature. Shut vehicle off and wait for a few minutes. Top off coolant and repeat. This should get the air out.

Response From dmac0923

ive also found it helpfull to put the cars HVAC on full heat. for two reasons. it allows coolant into the heater core and gets any trapped air out.

also the heat of the air coming out of the vents is a good gauge of air in the system.

if you have a constant HOT not warm flow of air out of the vents your good to go. you will see as your bleeding the system the air from the vents will be cold, warm, cold again, warm, HOT, warm, HOT..

and thats just the air pockets circulating through the system working their way to the highest point which should be your open radiator

Response From kingjim9 Top Rated Answer

but do I have the radiator cap off during this process?

Response From way2old

yes

Response From kingjim9

Thanks, I appreciate all your help. Its running good now.

Hey one mor thing... Do you think a recycling center would give me any deceant money for the old aluminum rad?

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Jumping in here: Metal are at an all time high. Ask at even junkyards as I see them advertizing for old household appliances and high prices for junk cars in any condition!

Copper, converters, aluminum and more are precious metal and worth $$ in many cases now,

Question From gogamish on 1999 Plymouth Breeze 2.0L Transmission Cooler Removal

Hi all,

I've diagnosed a severe trans oil leak in the hose that leads to the trans oil cooler in front of the car's radiator. I've removed the old hose and some of the metal tubing that lead to the cooler. In this process, I bent the cooler itself and broke it :( (see pics)
Now of course, I need to replace the whole trans cooler. I mean to replace the sawed-off metal tubing with rubber tubing. Now, I've never removed a transmission oil cooler before and am stuck on how to do it. Will I have to remove the fan assembly and radiator just to get to whatever holds the trans cooler in place?
Pics in the imgur album: http://imgur.com/a/dmd6B

I really don't wanna take this car to the shop again...

Thanks a bunch,

Seb

Response From Hammer Time

That is an aftermarket cooler. They use plastic holders that pass right through the radiator to hold them attached. They are one time use and will have to be cut to remove the cooler. The new cooler should come with some new ones to attach it.

Thanks for the info.

This means that the plastic holders pass through the water cooler and then also through the air conditioning radiator? In essence, I would need to remove the fan assembly in order to reach where these holders end up?

Thanks!

Response From Hammer Time

You'll have to peek behind the condenser to see if they go all the way through. They could have ended them at the back of the condenser. You can also if it's easier.

You can also if it's easier.

What do you mean here?

I looked through the condenser fans to see if I could find where the holders come out, but I couldn't see to much as the blades and plastic fan housing is quite large. Maybe the holders only go through the water cooler and not the condenser? I'll have to investigate further.

This morning I went to the store and bought another cooler that comes with a mounting kit. I'll see about it today after work.

Radiator Fluid Leaking

Question From kingjim9 on Radiator Fluid Leaking

I have a 1994 Plymouth Acclaim and the Radiator Fluid started leaking about a day ago. Today the reserve resovior is completly empty, how do i check for leaks?

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Fill it up at radiator first and start looking. Be prepared to catch the coolant if it is a real fast leak. Recovery tanks themselves can be the leak so you just have to look around. Catch this early will surely help to prevent any further damage,

ok i found coolant to be dripping onto the hose connecting to the water pump, The problem is, i can't tell if its the hose or the waterpump thats leaking. How can i tell if its the water pump thats bad?

Response From way2old

Clean it off really good with something like carburetor cleaner. This dries quickly. Use a mirror to determine where the leak is coming from.

Radiator Fluid

Question From kingjim9 on Radiator Fluid

Hey just replaced my radiator on a '94 plymouth acclaim 4cyl and bled all the air out from it. I had it parked up hill, took the cap off and started the engine to make sure no more bubbles are coming out. None did but something i noticed is the radiator fluid was raising, it raised all the way up the filler neck. Is this normal? By the way the temp gauge is acting normal so its not overheating or anything like that.

Response From way2old

The fluid rising in the radiator is normal if there is a little air left in the system. You may want to try it once more. If you have jackstands, jack vehicle up and place the stands under the front to be sure the radiator opening is the highest point.

Response From kingjim9

ya i had it running for about 10 minutes, didn't see anything bubble out. I think it might be trapped in the lines that run to the transmission. got any suggesstions on how to get that out?

Response From way2old

There should be no coolant in the transmission lines. Did you think to turn the heater on? This will help push air out of the heater core. After all the air is out, the coolant should flow when the thermostat opens up and stay at almost constant level. Get a thermometer and check the temperature of the coolant at the radiator. It should get hot. When it does, 210 or higher, shut car off and let coolant overflow. This will get the air out.

Response From kingjim9

Yes after i replaced the radiator i had it jacked up and had the heater on high. But on the radiator there are two little hoses that connect right up to the transmission, I think all theres no air in the heather core because it seems to function ok theres heat coming out of it when i leave it on once the engine is warmed up

Response From kingjim9

so thats why i think i've isolated the problem to be somewhere in those lines that connect up to the transmission.

Response From way2old

Again, those hoses have transmission fluid in them. Not coolant. They hook to your radiator tank to cool the fluid so the transmission does not cook itself. Run your car with the cap off and see if fluid stays close to a constant level. If you rev the car up, the level will drop slightly and raise when it is brought back to idle.

Response From kingjim9

O ok i got what those lines are for now. I'll take the cap of and let it run / rev it a little and observe the fluid level. I should be able to handle it from here know that i know thats transmission fluid in the lines not coolant.
