Heater won't work in idle

Showing 2 out of 2 Posts
Question From dmartin402 on Heater won't work in idle

Heater won't work in idle on my 2009 Nissan Frontier 4 cylinder until I move forward and then it will blow warm air immediately. I have checked the coolant in the radiator and reservoir and it is OK
I have been told that I probably have air in the radiator. How do I fix this?

Response From Discretesignals Top Rated Answer

If the engine is at operating temperature and is idling in park and you rev the engine up to 2500rpm, does the heater blow hot air?

Nissan Frontier Trans Rebuild

Question From KevsFrontier on Nissan Frontier Trans Rebuild

Hi Guys, newbie here.

I have a 2005 Frontier that experienced the dreaded strawberry milkshake of trans fluid and coolant. Made it to 150k miles and now have a serious shudder from 1st to 2nd, plus frequent drops into 2nd and 3rd when stopped.

Got a quote from a reputable local shop - $2200 for a rebuild.

But... they tell me they cannot be certain my computer will work with the new rebuilt transmission.

So... I'm faced with committing to the $2200, with the possibility (he says 50/50 shot) this may increase by up to $1100 if they need to get me a new computer.

Does this sound legit?

Response From kev2

Our trans guru gary should add his expert help, till then but my 2 cents-
NO does not sound right -your rebuilt trans should be compatible with your computer PCM TCM etc.
did you repair the cause of the trans fluid and coolant mixing issue ?
What codes are showing? ..

Gary will likely disagree but I am an optimist - A hail mary -drain trans flush and flush lets see how it acts then... a cheaper bet than the incompatible computer .

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Our "Guru" should be by but this isn't right - at all!

Does this sound legit?" NO! That bullcrap as it gets. The 'strawberry milkshake' you saw is either car was flooded over horribly with water or coolant was mixed in so that has to be fixed and there's lots there if both mixed up as the oil of trans in cooling system if so causes it's own issues up to horrors as well.

A trans shop if that's what this is should see this now and then NOT GUESS a 50/50 crap shoot! OMG - you pay to have it fixed and done totally the first time without the bull and get over the costs.

Wrong shop IMO - seems they are feeling you out for how much $$ they can snag sorry to say and it is costly,

Response From gsferraro

Hello,
I have one of these in my shop right now, Once the water gets into this trans its done, i would say that this computer cannot be used over. Do you have any codes present in the TCM? Gary

Response From KevsFrontier Top Rated Answer

Thanks for the replies, guys. I do not have the codes. And, I have replaced the radiator and done a complete trans service with new fluid and filter. It did not make any difference.

I'm bothered by the "50/50" thing and also by the estimate of $1100 for a "new computer." From my check a new TCM is at most a couple hundred $.

I assume the "computer" he is referring to must be the TCM and not another, more expensive, computer in the truck?

I'm in Miami if anyone has any connections in South Florida. The truck has been GREAT except for this issue!

Thanks!

Response From gsferraro

Hello,
Im in new york, i have an xterra with the same trans, the only place i would get the TCM/Valvebody is from the dealer....List price here is 1206.00, and has to be programmed as they are no longer plug and play, they have a high failure rate, thats why i only go to the dealer for the part, for 200.00 its used and then you have to hope it will work. Water (LOT) coming Out the Muffler Weep hole

Showing 2 out of 2 Posts
Question From dukemydog on Water (LOT) coming Out the Muffler Weep hole

bought an 06 6cyl Nissan Frontier and the odometer says 18,000 miles (Looks like 118,000). I bought it sight unseen at an online auto auction and paid way, way, too much. I unloaded it at a terrible loss telling the buyer what was wrong with the vehicle and he bought it anyway. But here's my question: I was driveing it and the temp gauge registered HOT. Engine started to sputter, and quit. Pulled to the side of the road and saw that the radiator was low so I put water into the unit and the engine made a cracking sound. I know from experience that one doesn't put water into a hot engine as it could crack the block but....So I filled the radiator and water came out the "weep" hole in the muffler (a lot) and the radiator level went DOWN. I think it had a cracked head or block. I checked the oil level and I'm sure I saw water in the oil. I believe the engine is shot what do you think?

Response From Double J Top Rated Answer

Sure sounds like it to me.

I know it a used vehicle from an auction .
But ,take it to Nissan ,maybe there is some warranty on the vehicle still.( or call first with the VIN number and see if it still has warranty left)
They may or may not honor any warranty based on the findings.
Make sure the vehicle is titled to his(owners) name and not in a business(used car dealer) name.
Worth a try...nothing to loose.

Unusally coolant leak 2001 frontier

Showing 2 out of 2 Posts
Question From AJ Frontier on Unusally coolant leak 2001 frontier

I have a 2001 Nissan Frontier 4x4 3.3 V6 108000mi and it has a very unusually coolant leak. It only leaks after the engine has shut off - but not every time. It appears that the coolant is coming from the weep hole at the water pump (not 100% on this). I realize that if coolant is coming from the weep hole then a seal has failed, but what I don't understand is why it isn't consistent?

A few weeks back I had a new radiator put in becuase I was having over heating issues. Once the new radiator was in the over heating disappeared. Then two weeks later I suddenly have a huge coolant leak. Would there be any connection here?

I also replaced the radiator cap (the old one was faulty) in hopes that would fix the problem, but not sure if it has yet. As of this morning I have had no leaking.

The Water Pump was replaced at 90,000 miles when I had the timing belt replaced so it seems like a failed seal is unlikely unless the radiator replacement would somehow cause a seal to fail.

Anyone have any thoughts on this? I really don't want to replace a water pump and if anyone knows of any other things that would cause coolant to leak only after the engine is shut off I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks

Response From Tom Greenleaf Top Rated Answer

A seal on anything with a shaft like a water pump is a strain on them. WPs need seal for vacuum and the pressures of the cap which dictates.

If you see so much as a smidgen of coolant or traces from a vent hole in a water pump it's no good and needs to go - again which stinks but it really won't heal,

Overheating Nissan Turbo

Showing 3 out of 3 Posts
Question From McFarmer on Overheating Nissan Turbo

I have a 2002 Nissan Frontier Turbo Intercooler 3.2 Liter V8 with around 250,000km. The original engine (2.7L) was recently burnt out and had to be replaced with the above engine which is likely from Japan and should have less than 50,000 km on it (they tend to have a high turnover due to costly assessment fees). Anyway, here's the problem.

The new engine, being larger than the old one, started to overheat going up a heavy incline. The radiator cap was found to be faulty and was replaced. It started to overheat again on same incline, so the radiator was changed to an aluminum radiator. The engine was able to make the incline without overheating and had no problems again until yesterday. Between the radiator change (about 4 weeks ago) and now, I also had the thermostat changed because I knew it was older. Driving up a heavy incline yesterday, the engine started to overheat. I slowed down from 4th to 3rd gear and the temp started to go down. It continued to do this throughout the journey through the hills. It appears that the coolant system is able to bring down the temp of the truck so long as it isn't going uphill. There are no leaks and the coolant level stays steady in the reservoir, is full in the radiator when cool enough to check. Also, the water pump is not leaking and all mechanics assure me that it is working. A few questions:
1) When shutting off the engine after it's up to normal heat levels, there is a lot of pressure in the coolant hoses, is this normal?
2) Could the radiator cap be providing too much pressure, ie: not allowing for pressure release even though it's practically new?
3) I've noticed the overheating will start in all gears, but mainly starts in 4th and 5th gears easiest even when not lugging the engine. Could this be due to the turbo or excess fuel injection?
4) Ultimately, what do you think could be the main culprit?

Response From kev2 Top Rated Answer

first thought - check fan, operation and shroud. A used engine would have me checking for head gasket issue...

Second where are you? I show a 2.4L I4 or a 3.3 V6... something is not showing up in my quick search.

Response From Hammer Time

He's in Thailand. That probably explains it.
