  • Knowing your coolant temperature can help to prevent burn injuries. Thermo Cap, with its built-in calibrated thermometer, indicates the coolant temperature. This is useful information prior to cap removal. Never attempt to remove Thermo Cap when the coolant temperature is very hot. The escaping hot coolant and steam may burn you. Check the Thermo Cap temperature indicator to determine if the coolant is cool enough to make removing Thermo Cap safe. If the coolant is very hot, then thoroughly rinse the radiator with cool water, until the coolant temperature drops into a cooler safe zone Thermo Cap's integrated coolant reclamation valve works great with your coolant recovery system. Your radiator can reclaim coolant from your overflow bottle. Wide 30 degree to 270 degree Fahrenheit temperature range. Calibrated in centigrade and Fahrenheit. Color-coded temperature ranges. Chromed crown with a colored trim ring. Indicates coolant temperature, Helps to prevent coolant injuries, integrated coolant reclamation valve, Improves under hood appearance, Fits most domestic or import vehicles and various valve pressures available.

2004 Chrysler 300M overheating mostly when it rains?

Question From SadesBlack on 2004 Chrysler 300M overheating mostly when it rains?

Hi all,
I want to first thank you for your time in helping with this problem in advance because it is driving us crazy. My boyfriend's 2004 Chrysler 300M has been overheating in total about 7-10 times in the past 2 months with most of those times being while its raining or after it rains. It is not often rainy in the Texas panhandle... When it stats to overheat, seemingly at random, temp gauge will start to edge over the midway mark (no actual #s on gauge) for a minute our two before it rapidly moves toward the red. At this point, it will sometimes drop down rapidly again to just above midway before once more shooting up toward red. It will continue into red if the car remains running. Slowing down, stopping, driving in city nor on highway seems to make any difference. The radiator is clean and water/coolant seems to circulate fine and the fans work. He had the thermostat, radiator cap and (just the other day) the water pump replaced. We thought the new water pump fixed the problem until the car overheated on our way home tonight. It started raining early am and has continued into the night. We did do some driving around while it was raining this afternoon with no problems. From researching, many suggest checking if the belt on the water pump is loose or if a fuse is blown, which we will do tomorrow. Does anyone have any other advice for this issue? Please feel free to ask any questions. Again, thank you so much for your help and time!

Response From Hammer Time

When this overheats, is it subsequently low on coolant?

Is this overheating at lower speed, traffic situations or morat highway speeds?

Response From SadesBlack

Thank you for such quick replies! He checks the coolant level frequently and it stays full (except the two tines it overheated badly) without leaking. He has even tried a few different brands of coolant. I'm pretty sure a family friends has a scan tool and we can try that as soon as possible. Thanks again!

Just a note on coolant as we call it: Don't overdo it meaning not too strong as the name is misleading. Too strong doesn't cool engine well! Mix of 50/50 should show freeze protection of -34F. If using strong mix or antifreeze/coolant pure it will not cool properly! I don't know why a rain matters and actually would think that would help cooling system?

The overheats in it's history is a reason to pay attention now. Cars don't just overheat for no reason or consume coolant mix. If it does either there's a real problem to find and fix. Brand name products I'm not convinced matter so much as long as it states meets the vehicle's specifications. Base is all Ethylene Glycol. Additives can be different not the base product. If your adding or changing coolant I approve of using distilled water as the mix especially if tap water qualities are unknown,

scan for codes even if CEL is OFF.

Check that engine cooling fans come on when A/C or defroster are selected...

Response From Discretesignals

I would hook a scan tool up and monitor ECT voltage/temperature PID and watch the gauge to see if they agree with each other.
