99 Jeep Grand Cherokee loses power

Question From dwmcclure84 on 99 Jeep Grand Cherokee loses power

1999 Jeep Grand CHerokee 4.7 L V8 149K

I have a jeep grand that will just die while driving. The jeep literally loses all power. It does not appear to matter if I am at highway speeds or stopped at a light, it will just shut off with no power. Sometimes it will restart within a few minutes-other times it's hours. It was throwing an error code of P0443 (EVAP system) and I had the purge solonoid replaced today. When leaving the repair shop it died two miles away. Any ideas?

TIA!

Response From Discretesignals Top Rated Answer

Normally an EVAP concern or problem won't cause a stalling and no restart situation. In your case the P0443 is a purge valve circuit code which means the PCM detected an open or short in the purge valve circuit. A problem in that circuit shouldn't cause your concern unless it is linked to a wiring problem in a harness with other wiring that is crucial to the running of the engine that may be damaged or chaffing on something. If the code comes back, they are going to have to diagnose the code more accurately.

The problem with something like this is that it needs to be diagnosed when the engine doesn't want to restart. That means checking your basics such as fuel pressure, injector pulse, spark, and computer activity. One or more of those things are going to be missing when the engine doesn't want to restart. Once you know what is missing, you can formulate a strategy to diagnose where the problem is most likely to be.

Response From dwmcclure84

Any idea on how to accomplish that? Should I buy a code reader and plug it in when it dies?

Response From Discretesignals

You can plug in a code reader when it dies and doesn't want to restart to see if the PCM is alive and able to communicate with your code reader. That is only one piece of the puzzle though. Even though you are able to communicate with it doesn't mean if it is getting the inputs it needs to perform certain outputs or if the PCM is capable of controlling the outputs even though it is getting the correct inputs.

Like I mentioned above, you need to check for fuel pressure using a gauge, injector pulse, and spark during the no start also. Find out what is missing and then go from there.

Response From dwmcclure84

Sorry I don't know how to do any of that. I can use google and forums and that about sums up what I know about cars. I have successfulkly replaced the alternator in it using youtube :)

2000 Jeep Cherokee not makin' it through the weekend! HELP!

Question From bulldoglover62 on 2000 Jeep Cherokee not makin' it through the weekend! HELP!

Hey all,

Woman here with no knowledge of cars.... but here goes:

Catalytic converter was stolen. Had an after market replacement put on. Needed some extra
pipe as they sawed the damn thing off.....

Passed my emission tests but now my CHECK ENGINE light is on.

Went to AutoZone and got codes
P0170: Definition: Fuel Trim bank one
and
P0138: Definition: HO2S 12 circuit condition (Heated oxygen sensor bank 1 sensor 2)

Yah.... *taps toe.... looks up to sky..... WTH??

Do I take it in for repairs? Can I drive it safely for a while? Is this the fall out for getting an aftermarket Cat?

Ya know, I love being a woman, but it's time like these.... *shakes fist at the sky.....

Thanks for any and all help!

bullie

Response From bulldoglover62

Well heck.... it's worse today!! I went to the grocery store and barely made it home.
The car won't seem to shift up..... it DOES, but only after sitting in first and barely moving....
And when it does, the acceleration is really poor.

It's a 2000 Jeep Cherokee Laredo with over 100,000 miles and an aftermarket
catalytic converter and an engine cooling systerm that runs independently from the car.

ANYONE? PLEASE HELP!!!!

Thanks!
bullie

Response From carjunky

Did you replace the O2Senor or did they steal that as well? It seems your computer is trying to figure out the right fuel/air mix and just getting it all wrong....

Response From bulldoglover62

Hey now! That might be it! No, they didn't replace the CO sensor when they put the aftermarket Cat in.....

Thanks so much for your reply!

bullie

Response From way2old Top Rated Answer

Hello Bulldoglover62. I just got back into town. I see Carjunky has replied to you. I looked up the codes under a generic site and came up with these possibilities as to your problems.
The P0138 is the O2 sensor heater circuit shorted to the power wire going to the sensor somewhare. It could also be the sensor shorted inside.
P0170 Fuel trim (FT), bank 1 – malfunction Intake leak, AIR system, fuel pressure/pump, injector(s), EVAP canister purge valve, HO2S
The P0170 indicates the system is running lean. It could be due to the sensor be shorted to power somewhere also. They are both on the same side of the engine. The P0138 is for the rear O2 sensor on the drivers side. Good luck.

Response From bulldoglover62

Thanks to you both! I'm taking it back to the dewd that put the cat. converter on and
hopefully he'll understand what the dealio is.

The information here arms this female with something to keep 'em guessing. *wink

Thanks again!
